I thought at least somebody else would have mentioned RUSH... but the more I think about it I'd like to change my choice to Pink Floyd. Keep thinking about all the time I spent in high school listening to those albums over and over again. Sure wish I hadn't pawned them all the year after graduation for a 30 minute fix. Damn was I stupid back then. Guess I know what I'll be asking for this Christmas.

where are all the fellow DEADHEADS??

GRATEFUL DEAD is it

grandmaster zappa is missing on the list

kiss my ass gwb, hmmm it's real angora

pink floyd

pink floyd

pink floyd is definitely one of my favorite, probably because of all the acid and shroom trips I had while watching The Wall through high school. Darkside of the Moon is definitely one of the greatest albums of all time.

What about Slayer, definitely one great band and still rocking. However, very metalhead like, but I enjoy it. Just my thoughts

Beatles should dominate!

Beatles should dominate!

Of all on that list, The Beatles should win hands down! If it weren't for their all encompassing social and cultural influence, just about every other band on that list might not have existed to begin with!

Now for all you Zep fans. I grew up in Zep's hey-day and, while I was not at all a big fan, they certainly were the shit in the early to late 70's. However, the influence on modern day rock NO WHERE NEAR approaches the influence of the greatness of Black Sabbath. Still to this day, Sabbath chord progressions can be heard throughout bands like Godsmack, Disturbed and even Metallica. In the 80's, Sabbath was mainly responsible for the onslaught of bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and UFO. All of these bands have been quoted as being influenced heavily by Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill in the early days of their musicianship. So to all the Zep lovers, Zepplin was NEVER the Masters of Heavy Metal (as the media used to call them, which is what turned me off to them more than anything). BLACK SABBATH CREATED HEAVY METAL and the music world was forever changed by it. BLACK SABBATH RULES!!!

Now, as for my personal favorite. Here's one for everyone to check out when they can. Connecticutt's FATES WARNING is a band that forever changed my life. The progressive metal stalwarts took the spacey sounds of Pink Floyd and married it with the heavier feel of metal and added the precision musicianship of jazz musicians and took the progressive genre to a new level. Add to this the sheer melodic vocal stylings of Ray Alder (San Antonio , TX's very own!!) and Mark Zonder on drums (the greatest drummer to ever pick up sticks in Rock n Roll . . . and I should now as I've been a professional rock drummer for 30+ years now) and you have a band for the ages!! If you haven't even heard of them . . . download them as fast as you can . . . it's great smokin' music. Can recommend them highly enough.

***Look for their album "Pleasant Shade of Grey" . . . it's their "Dark Side of the Moon" ***

I love all the bands but the Beatles and Dylan preceded most and the rest couldnt really have come along without Elvis either.

I chose the Beatles but Pink Floyd was a great choice. BOG

We are all right...except Hybrid. ;) He sucked...

I have to vote for Led Zepplin, seen them in concert more than the rest ( 3 ).
Sorry not to see Deep Purple on the list they rock too.

I would have to add smashing pumpkins and phish. A lot of poeple rag on the pumpkins but I live rock guitar, I'm pretty good myslef, and I've seen the pumpkins go where no other band has to my ear. Phish with bettery lyrics would have been the king to me though.

Pink Floyd leading? No way...

Pink Floyd leading? No way...

Never saw that coming....;o)

Having been out of the classic rock scene for years, my opinion doesn't really count anymore, but I just want to give some props to old Van Halen. I think David Lee Roth said, "Money may not buy happiness, but it'll buy you a boat big enough to sail right up next to it"
Rock and frickin Roll.

Hi everybody, I enjoy nearly everything posted as greatest band.....something from nearly everyone has had some positive listening experiences for me. I would like to throw out a few stoned thoughts as long as I can... :p

Bottom line for me:
There are people who listen to music......there are people who play an instrument and listen to music......and there are people who are high and listen to music as well as people who do it all.....each of these categories would possibly nominate a different band with a different style of music.

Guitar players would probably pick Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Randy Rhoades, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Joe Satriani and the bands they are associated with as the greatest.....and I'm not counting guitarists from 1990 on.

I am not at all surprised to see that Pink Floyd is in the lead on this site considering the sheer number of stoners who get off on Floyd's music...and they are still being listened to by 15 to 21 year olds even today.....they are the greatest stoner's band.

My pick for the greatest band who ever influenced the most people in the world--the Beatles.

The greatest hard rock band--Led Zeppelin....Plant's amazing vocals from 68 to 74 before his voice changed and Page's guitar riffs are the most influential...even for metalheads.....the open single string downstrokes on songs like Whole lotta Love and Communication Breakdown were so far ahead of its time.... other guitar players know what I mean....Sabbath was more influential for their mood and dark tonality.

The greatest band to combine all styles: rock, folk, country, a little(very little)jazz--The Grateful Dead...even though I don't care for them much.

The future??--U2 with their newest release could very well put them at the top by the end of the decade....but then what do I know???

Rock on people!!!
