i thought i would share this with all of you, as i know there are many animal lovers among us. there is a recall on many dift. brands of dog & cat food, including generic & brand names like: Eukanuba, Science Diet, Nutro, & many, many others. the recall includes the US, Canada & Mexico. animals have presented with kidney & liver failure, many dieing after eating the tainted food.

please go here, for a list of the brands & lot #s, being recalled:
http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/menu03_07.html

Menu Foods Issues Recall of Specific Can and Small Foil Pouch Wet Pet Foods

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Emporia, KS -- March 16, 2007 -- Menu Foods, Emporia, Kansas, is initiating a North American recall of dog and cat food manufactured in its "cuts and gravy" format between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. There has been a small number of reported instances of cats and dogs in the United States (none in Canada) becoming sick from kidney failure after eating the affected products. There have been approximately ten deaths reported.

Consumers who have product which is being recalled should stop using it and return it to Menu Foods in accordance with the procedure found at www.menufoods.com/recall. This procedure will be available from 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007. If your dog or cat is showing any signs of kidney failure, consult your veterinarian.

The recall includes an extensive list of brand names and lot numbers. In order to determine whether cat and dog food is subject to recall, consumers should refer to the comprehensive list of products at www.menufoods.com/recall. This list of products will be available from 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007.

Menu Foods voluntarily recalled the products after learning of complaints of vomiting and renal failure in dogs and cats following their consumption of product produced between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. FDA has been apprised of this action.

Following feedings of the product, some cats and dogs refused further feedings, while others exhibited signs of renal failure (signs of renal failure include loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) and others died from renal failure.
Menu Foods has undertaken extensive testing of the products in question, employing both internal and external resources, but to date has been unable to confirm any causal relationship to our product. Specifically, tests of some affected products have not revealed the cause of sickness, and testing will continue until a better understanding of the facts has been achieved.

Menu's products are distributed to supermarkets, pet specialty stores and mass merchandisers across the United States. It can best be identified by reference to the list of products found at www.menufoods.com/recall. This list of products will be available from 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007.

Menu Foods is notifying its customers by telephone and mail and is arranging for the return of all recalled products. The products were distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

While the number of complaints has been relatively small, Menu Foods is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount to Menu Foods.

Consumers with questions may contact Menu Foods at 1-800-551-7392.

Thanks for posting this Nattynattygurrl. I read about this yesterday in my local paper and freaked out when I saw that the brand I buy for my cats was on it. It really bothers me that so many pet food brands use the same manufacturer. I have heard that 10 pets in our area have died from kidney failure caused by this. And supposedly the company doesn't even know really what the problem is, they think it might have something to do with changing their wheat gluten supplier.
Hope everyone's pets here on the board are safe and sound!

I heard about it when they were first recalling all wet & dry foods they make.....We ended up getting another bag of cat food, only to find out that wasn't being recalled anymore. Oh well, at least we have extra food on hand for a while....

I hadn't realized the food had been bad since Jan..My cat already has kidney problems, I better get her in for a check up... I don't think she had any tainted food as her highness won't eat a store brand...Thanks again Nattty :joint:

Since we are on the topic of bad things for pets, Hartz. Does anyone use any Hartz brand items for their cats? If so, please discontinue use. Especially the flea, tick and ear mites medicines. They will kill your cat. Seen it dozens of times. Pretty much all of their crap is low grade and can be harmful to your pet.

So many of us here really love our pet's, and treat them as good, if not better than family member's. I'm gulity of this myself...mea culpa......

If most of us really knew about the gross, harmful and poisonous ingredient's in a majority of commercial brand dog and cat food's, I doubt that you would ever want to feed that over priced junk to your pet. Still don't beleive me....??? Read this link to chapter four, from a book by Ann Martin, entitled "Food Pets Die For: The Shocking Facts About Pet Food."

http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html

Still skpetical....??? Read this from the US Government FDA website.....

http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FOI/DFreport.htm

My new puppy dog eats a raw food diet. I buy it at my local pet food store in pre-made, frozen patties, 75% meat, 25% veggies with the bones finely crushed and added to the mix. Chicken rabbit, salmon and bison are some of the flavor's on his menu. The bison mix has certified organic hemp seed oil in it...... :joint: All of the meat's used are hormone and vaccine free, and the veggies are mostly certified organic grown.

Since going on this diet, I've noticed a big improvement health wise in my new pooch. He has lot's more energy, pearly white clean teeth with no gross doggie breath or body odor, nicer shinier coat, and his stools are half the size from when he ate commercial junk dog food, making clean up's quicker.
