Wouldn't know what to do without my girl (Oriental Shorthair). I also have a blue pit-bull from champion lines that absolutely loves her to. I grew up with both dogs and cats and have had them both my whole life.

Cats are awesome friends. Get a mature cat, keep him or her away from the plants and get some pine litter (smells great, biodegradable) and you should be set. Better yet grow some oat or wheat grass or catnip for his own personal use. 
cats are pretty smart and will respect you, if you respect them.

i do however, always treat everyone the same.
eyecontact and talking with the same respect to everyone, whatever animal they are.
and if they are friendly, i give the same.
hmm, most people dont understand this, they seem to mostly go by rank and file when dealing with people.
i was once asked , when i was kinda working with children, how come the children connected so easily to me and listened.
well, i had no idea and went and asked the children.

dont have deers here, only saw them from a distance once in sweden and one in a zoo in denmark.
iceland does not have any wild animals for the most part. (Apart from birds, who have learned to never come close to humans, long ago.)
once saw a mink, ferret type creature.
it jumped in a hole and kept growling at me with teeth bared.
unfortunetly im not quite dr dolittle.
that would be nice though.

Careful, cats can be addictive!
I like dogs OK but would never have one, they're so much trouble, always bugging you and - well, they're so needy. they get really sulky if you're busy and don't scratch them behind the ears enough. Had them while the kids were growing up but they're not my cup of tea. For some reason they like me and are always demanding attention.
Cats on the other hand are affectionate and playful but not needy, and are perfectly capable of telling you to go screw yourself. I like that independence. That extends to them being perfectly content to be left alone for a couple days as long as they have plenty of food and water and a clean litter box.
There's something very comforting about having a cat curled up in your lap, purring away. And they're a riot, chasing a laser spot or some little thing tied to a string. Add catnip (kitty pot) and it can be a circus until they get too stoned and just flop down and grin.
Lots of positives, I've always been a cat person. Imo a neutered male is the best. And the animal shelter is the best place to find a good one.
The negatives have been pretty well covered. The one to really be aware of is their love for seedlings and clones. DON'T forget and leave them accessible. Cats love those little green leaves and will go through a tray like a lawn mower. they can also be hell on the furniture and the woodwork, a scratching post is VITAL. We ended up with the newel post half gone. Some cats are worse than others that way and it's best not to take chances.

That's actually a form of dominance, and I don't allow it. Other forms of dominance include leaning hard on the person, sitting on their feet, putting their feet on you, and physically being above you.
I absolutely love dogs, easily as much as horses, but I need to better learn how to read and train them.
One thing for sure, a dog won't take care of itself the way a cat can and still remain tame. But my dog is cleaner than our (nice) cat. He is, without a doubt, THE dirtiest cat I have *ever* known. Absolutely filthy.
I enjoy cats and really want another, but prefer dogs for the most part and tend to gravitate toward them first.
Don't usually watch reality shows, but this is rrrreally good. The stuff they show actually works and people in this thread who have problems with their cats destroying stuff or pissing in wrong places or what ever should really check it out. Solutions Jackson offers are mostly really simple too, though may take some effort. Cats are low maintenence pets, yes, but most need for example active play time every day.

It was after watching a few shows that I got to actually pet PsychoKitty. And I learned how to slowly bat my eyes, which Stinky totally loves and he does it back to me, but PK just can't tolerate me looking AT her still. I don't want her to feel like she has to stay away, so I keep the electric blanket on, and she's on it every night now, and stay as quiet as possible when I'm feeding, stuff like that.
I got Stinky some catnip mice, and the dog plays with them too. He's getting kind of old, he's very fat, filthy as I mentioned, but he's a very, very friendly, confident cat who's very cool because even though he's neutered, he gets sex in exchange for small prey. He and PsychoKitty have a deal worked out, and I caught it on tape once.

We have older cat that's totally non-violent, he's a big boy and dominates two younger kitties by simply placing his paw on their foreheads... that's all it takes. Does that to humans too, very possessive and majesthetic animal.
Get a shorthair cat! You don't want to deal with the issues long hairs have. Shorthair cats can keep themselves cleaner and there's less of it around to clean up. You probably never need to bathe a shorthair cat if it keeps itself clean...
Yes, I like "My Cat from Hell" too! After watching more than a dozen episodes it becomes quite clear that almost all problems with cats are due to their guardians' lack of understanding about cats.
I recommend that show for anyone having issues with their cat(s). Once you understand cat nature you can care for them properly. In many cases, especially when the cat is confined indoors in a small apartment, they just need more attention and playtime with their guardians.
I don't really recommend anyone get a cat and keep it confined in a relatively small space. If the cat is an adult and has been an indoor cat all its life, then it will probably be fine being indoors. But all cats want to go out and hunt, even if they're fixed. That's why you must play with them so they can exercise their hunting instincts.
If you want a cat to be a piece of furniture, an accessory, then forget it!
Talk to cats like they're people and see what happens! You'd be surprised at how much they understand and how well they respond.

Here's a cool little setup for the master of his domain.
i have 2 cats. fix males so they don't want to piss on everything. you can buy self-cleaning litter boxes now, too. they are motion activated just like urinals & sinks i run into from time to time. a buddy had 2 that would keep fucking with us until we got out the squirt guns, then they would take turns running through the room at top speed while we "blasted away". want to watch them get ripped? grow some catnip & give them a fresh stalk every now & then. what a hoot...
