Got a plan

I want to grow in smart pots, but I need to put them under ground ( because of my moon cricket cage size see album) my plan is to dig a hole 1' wider n 8" deeper then my 30 gal smart pot, I was going to put gravel in the bottom n around the sides. (for air n drainage) anyone try this n what do u think? Thank.

Not trying to be rude but this plan of yours makes no sense to me at all...the whole point of smart pots is the fabric they are made out of allows tons of oxygen to get to the roots and it air prunes the roots when they grow outside the fabric If you bury it under the ground it defeats that purpose and the plants roots would just grow right through it into the native soil...

Considering they are also expensive I really do not see why you are thinking of doing this? Get some cheap ass grow bags of you want to bury pots in the ground.

Oh shit I just saw you plan on puttong gravel around it I still don't think its a very practical idea...it would maybe work the way you want if you incased it with a lot of gravel. Is this a gorilla grow or ? If it's in your yard and ya don't mind the extra work I guess it could work pretty good. Sorry for misreading your post.

Look at my album, I live in the heart of a big city, I had a chain link fence, got broken into twice, got a few shot at um
with a high powered paint ball gun, n that pissed the cop's off, so I built the cage out of 1/2" rebar (30'x40'no more mooncricket's) my hight can not exceed a 6' fence, so I have to keep a low profile, I'm just finishing up my light dep grow (in smart pots ) n it turned out great. on a side note u can't piss me off I have thick skin I'll be 70 in less then a month n hard work doesn't scare me. have a great day

Wow that is impressive!! Love the innovation. I think your plan would work well as long as you use a lot of gravel on the floor and for the walls of the pot. Sorry again brother, I meant no disrespect just misunderstood. Now I see your reasonings

I dont think you have any other option if you want the space.
You could just tie down the plants with string if they get too big too.

I still kinda concur with the first response. Why not drop it deep upon transplant straight into native soil. similer to your pot idea but no pot

Yeah man might just try to dig a hole and fill it with killer soil. Otherwise, get your native soil lab tested with recommendations, amend your native soil, and hardly dig at all....if that's an option :). If you want the most control then do what your saying. Hopefully it goes well. Still think u will yield a lot better growing in the ground though..

done that been their, I do tie my plants n plant limbs down, but on the limbs, u have to tie them up first (if u just tie them down, to spread them out, they will snap at the stalk because of the weight.

Done that been their also. Had my soil tested n the mag. was off the chart. Have removed the top 8" of soil n will replace with good dirt, I did a light dep grow with smarties n liked the out come. I was only going to put 5 smart pots in, the reason for the gravel is, a 30 gal pot isn't much, I figured with the gravel, if the roots need more room they can work their way threw the gravel for more to feed on, n with the pot surrounded by gravel, it should be easy to flush them. It's just an idea n I won't live for ever, I was hopeing someone has tried this before. Thanks for the input :tiphat:

I'd say throw a screen over them, top and train and manage. That should keep her low if started early. If you want you can do all the extra stuff with the gravel but I think you're golden if you just train it well

i dont see the point and sounds like a lot of work.Just train them any way you find fitting.
You have beautiful plants by the way!!!Do you use the sun and lights combined?

Yes about 1 hour of light, n 11 hours of sun, n a 3 mill top when it's raining or looks like it will.

:woohoo:I did like a women(how don't get up set lady) I JUST CHANGED MY MIND.Your right the hell with the gravel, I'm just going to leave a space 6" between the pot n the dirt walls, i'll use some wirer n plastic to keep the dirt back, n just put my small plants in the 30 gal. pots.

I knew the gravel would get culled. Hell I'm in my 20's and think that's too much work. Lol.
Good luck and hopefully you don't get ripped again
