the only benefit of mylar is the heat reflection.....If you have anyone looking for heat signatures ... like LEO
but white walls will do!

Look into old projection TV's... they have a reflective screen inside the TV thats perfect..it's on a board and reflective like mylar and light too..

oh yea.. THAT TV caught on fire..glad i was home..one of the 3 long ass 2 feet color tubes after taking the back panel off cuz the TV would not turn on..Flames just shot out when it was turned on and a color tube wasted ...Took a hammer and smashed most of the TV BUT the 46 inch mylar that was inside.

you know i have read some posts which say that mylar does reduce heat sigs and
other posts which claim that it does not do this......

And i have seen some super-expensive fabric (like 200 bucks) which is for sale
and the description claims that it is the only fabric which can reduce heat sigs......
I was suspicioius about that product for sure!!!! I will try to find the retail website
which advertises this product......

gluing mylar to poster board or panelboard is a great idea and this is definately the
way to go.....allows easy cleaning and no taping the walls......

personally i hate the flimsy 1 mil mylar and the 2 mil mylar isn't much better......there are some DIY solar-panel websites which talk about 5 mil mylar and even 10 mil mylar!!
now i would love to get my hands on some 10 mil mylar and make some cool shapes....

One other drawback to mylar is the fact that it conducts electricity. If you were
to buy an ionizer and place it near your sheets of mylar, the ions build up on the
mylar until eventually you will hear a snap-sound and you will see a tiny blue spark....
it is particularly bad when the mylar gets wrinkled......now i don't think these tiny
blue sparks are enough to start a big fire, if your grow is a tinder-closet i guess it
is possible.......oh well.......those aspenair ionizers don't work well anyway.....

get safety lenses for your lights (if possible) and please be careful with electricity!!!!
these ballasts and lights are very very safe for indoor use and are UL tested but
when misused (or in freak accidents) anything could happen!!!!

safety first!!!

I know a guy who's MH bulb blew out while he was at work and some of the hot glass landed on a cloth that was nearby. No real damage to anything but his neighbor saw a little smoke coming from his exaust and called the fire dept. He had 8 plants less than a foot tall and recieved 5 years in the penitentiary where he is today. Number 62144 from the state pen would tell you that it can happen to you and that he also had the "it's ok" attitude and it was so terribly misguided and unwise. Certainly for him, the risk was far greater than he had calculated.

When I consider mylar, the question for me is do I abandon my "no flammables" rule and increase my risk to gain perhaps another ounce ? There can be no logical arguement that this risk is acceptable.

I'm not here to debate on how bad mylar is etc. But, i did read a good post on hanging mylar. Alot of people have trouble keeping mylar tight when hanging. Someone recently in a thread discussed that taking a nice big piece of cardboard and sticking the mylar against this..then hanging in the grow room will keep you from having the stuff crinkle up and not stay straight. -Opt

I staple my nylar to the wall. Perhaps another idea is to weigh it down at the bottom with a metal strip or rod. Like some curtains that have lead wiring sown inside the bottom ligning.
Me I like my mylar. It prevents water seeping into my closet walls and that has already caused the plaster to come off. Not that I care. I don't live in my closet. :joint:

i'll have to ask my buddy what kind he has in his grow box....he said it was flameproof and i seen it was very sturdy....looked like it was about 1/2 inch thick.....it's the brightest thing i've ever seen....he got a 400hps in a 3x2x4 grow box with that material he uses on all walls, ceiling, floor, and door of the box....we wear sunglasses when we look in there lol.

peace
