Goodbye Mylar - It's dangerous!!

I just recieved my order of Mylar and just before installing it on my growroom walls, I decided to do a little flame test and THE SHIT BURNS WITH A FLAME!!

My growroom is arc faulted, double ground faulted, with low power breakers installed into a garanteed 20 minute open flame fire rating- I'm not going to come home from work one day and have the police and fire department meet me with their discovery. You can fart in my growroom and everthing shuts down. There is not now and never will be ANYTHING flammable in my growroom - period!! Goodbye Mylar, hello flat white!

Just thought I would pass this on to prevent someone from making the terrible mistake that I almost made!

lol, if there's a reason for a flame to be in your growroom you already have a problem. whats it matter if mylar burns with a flame if there is never a flame in the room?

Goodness Time2, as a master electrician let me be the first to inform you that fire is the absolute greatest danger that ANY indoor grower has. Practically every aspect of your operation is a potential flame. Ballast can short and burn, stressed interior wall wiring can overheat with the load, MH/HPS lights burn at over 1000 degrees - GOOD GOD SON YOUR GROWROOM IS A TENDERBOX!! Act accordingly.

Great post...and thank you!! Safety is number 1!

From the sounds of it you could cook marshmellows on an open fire in this grow room without worry. time2unite wanna join me for a cookout?:biglaugh:

Another reason not to use Mylar--it's a pain in the ass! I used to use mylar but...

It's hard to put it up wrinkle free (by yourself) and unless you use some kind of super glue, it likes to fall off the walls--duct tape doesn't work...this I know for sure  Yes, these can be overcome, but also...

the biggest downfall is that it gets dirty and marked. It's reflective potential drops accordingly. Since there's only about a 5% difference in reflectivity between this and plain ol' flat white paint, I don't see a comparison. In fact, I think that unless your mylar is spic and span, you will get better refelctivity from paint. Painted walls are very easy to wash and disinfect, and easy to throw another coat on if needed. Of course a lot of the bigger guns here go straight to the poly, but I'm just a small fish.

For the longest time my walls were blue. I painted them a flat white, and see no difference what so ever in my plants size/weight...

ya...if you want to throw a little extra money in, you could buy 'kitchen and bath' flat white. It has a component that resists mold etc. Good if your grow room is high in humidity.

G.Potter,

I recommend "SNOWROOF", its a paint that when dried (cured) it is 96% reflective, it is an elastomer membrane, it does not crack.

If I was to repaint my cabinet-Snowroof is what I would use.

Potter as an electrician you are, do you know if there is something to plug in, a device maybe, and prevent fire . I am not good at this. You know something that it can turn off the power before the shit take fire.Because it is really a nightmare!!!

Hey folk. I believe that all growers should have their rooms arc faulted and ground faulted. The Arc fault breakers go right into the panel box in your house. If there is a short of any kind the breaker will kick. The ground fault can be accomplished with just the purchase of a ground fault receptical from any Lowes or HD. I would also recommend an overload breaker which is cheapest to purchase as a tool saver extension cord. They sell them at Lowes in the electrical section. It says "save your tools, dont burn them up with undercurrent. Its 15$. If you try and pull too much electric through the line it will kick.

Minds 1 = what brand is "snowroof". Where can you buy it?

Great info on Snowroof paint.I will get some for my next redo of my room.Potter as an electrician which I am not, I was wondering if your ballast and all conections are outside the growroom and your light is hung 18" or so above the plants with ample room above reflector what causes the fire :chin: not that I dont agree with you that safety is first, just had a ? :smoweed:

as a master of common sense let me be the first to inform you that fire is the absolute greatest danger indoors period lol. i'm just saying if there's a flame in your growroom or closet it will still start a fire if it's just a painted wall or if it has mylar on it....but i was already 2 steps ahead of ya here, i use and recommend sunleaves dureflect....it's waterproof, flame and tear resistant....little more spendy but well worth it....it can be used forever basically.

peace

FYI, Dureflect works quite well if you have it attached to a flat surface and it doesn't move much. If, like in my situation, you try to use it as a "reflective wall", it eventually, from the fans and handling, begins to "degrade". One day I noticed silver flecks on my plants. Upon closer inspection, I realized the Dureflect was degrading. The stuff that was stuck to the wall securely was fine, just the "wall" portion was screwing up. Peace...

It is dangerous. That mofo unrolled himself and came at me like no other- luckily I had my trusty bic lighter in hand and he was no match.

If you are careful and give items their respect you'll find you can use whats better without the worry. Most will find if you take a lighter to a lot of things they will flame. My flower room has lots of mylar and the co2 unit has an open flame, neither of them has ever had the opportunity to meet.

One more thing about mylar, it conducts electricity like a puddle of water.

I'm not here to debate on how bad mylar is etc. But, i did read a good post on hanging mylar. Alot of people have trouble keeping mylar tight when hanging. Someone recently in a thread discussed that taking a nice big piece of cardboard and sticking the mylar against this..then hanging in the grow room will keep you from having the stuff crinkle up and not stay straight. -Opt
