definitely see the van gogh. the rijks museum is cool too get the tour with the artists personal tour. anne frank house is interesting. the heineken experience is probably one of the more entertaining tours in amsterdam. as far as canal tours go.. there is a boat club (ask around) that will take you on a smaller more dutch-like boat with less people and for like half the price. rent a bike! dont be initimidated just be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine on two wheels. it beats walking and taking the tram. if you decide on the tram buy tickets at a ticket area.. they are cheaper (daily and weekly tram passes) at thet ticket booths. on the tram they charge you 2,60 euro for a one hour pass. great coffee shops i experienced are the damkring, grey area, and amnesia. try to find the original damkring.. if you are in dam square facing the palace and the monument is behind you it is towards your left in the shopping area its kinda well hidden so ask around there for the damkring alot of the people working in the shops know. everything there is bio (soil grown) and reasonable. also if you go to the cannabis college you can ask around there. they directed me to the only "all organic" coffee shop in town. smoking on the streets (even more residential ones) or in the red light is completely fine. no one will bother you (atleast no one really bothered me unless i sparked conversation). respect is key when smoking in the dam. just dont puff around old ladies and young children. be respectful of the people next to you!! maybe move down the canal a bit if you dont want to bother someone with your spliff/canna smoke. honestly if you want to chill on a canal in some peace the red light really isnt the place to do it. however if you are on the main red light canal.. just go away from the ocean towards the bottum of the street and you'll find the red light gets 10 x less congested. enjoy holland!
