Here's a link some of you might find useful-

re: "use same thermostat and use a plug in oil heater , the tall ones with the fins that are filled with oil , and let er rip."

Do you attach the heater to the grow room in the same way? With a hose?

you'd be better off getting a window a/c and building a box for it, much more energy efficient and then you can use it for a sealed room in the future if need be.

I think you're right, if for no other reason than the big difference in price between, say a 5K btu window air conditioner, and it's stand-alone counterpart.

Window unit new right now- $95. Decent-looking used one- $75.

The equivalent Portable air conditioner like the one in the photo- $289 was the cheapest I could find, and I could not find ANY used ones.

So that would be a real factor for anyone trying to cool a small space in an attic.
Cheers

here is a portable ac with a 6x4 straight boot attached the the front with a vent tube going into a tent

This is actually my picture (Its totally cool you used it Green Bowls). Those type of ac units are Expensive. If you can fit in a window ac unit you will be very happy with the results. I suggest building a box around it like this

Or like this one

If you got carpenter skills you could build it into the wall and then build a box on the other side of the wall. Like this

Here is another pic pf my old portable.

yea man sorry wasn't trying to steel ya pic , just using it as a reference . it is a good pic showing what i was talking about ,,,,

and yea building a box for it is good , just i always use a drain pan under it , to be safe .

the oil heater you would have to place in the grow area. endless you get some type of heater that blows out a opening rather then around like the heater i has said .. the fin heater"s you can get cheep at yard sales or craigs list . same with window ac's always see them for like 40 bucks , use'd

Jellyfish , thank for the Reputation . that was very cool of you . anytime i can help , please ask away and i will do the same bro.

also i have been doing heating and air for 6 years , so i have a bit of inside info on the subject .

Groovy, GreenBowlsmoker!

Here are some ~attic~ related thoughts and questions for anybody.

Isn't running any kind of a heater inside a room made of mylar pretty scary? The attic I'm speaking of will only being used for vegetation, so it will be running fluoros only.

When you're using foil covered foam sheathing to make an ac box, does the foil side go in or out? I know this is trivial, but I can't seem to find an answer.

Another thread is having an 'attic vs. basement' debate. For some there's no choice. I like the idea of having a thread just about attics, because attics have advantages, and they have their challenges.

excuse me, I'll be in the attic.

the foil side goes outward !!!

yes its a bit scary , but if you build correctly you place( grow room ) wont be falling apart and you wont have to worry about the heater touching anything .

one thing i was just thinking about is this ,
if you set that stand alone thermostat to lets say 90 , when the stat sense's its probe is hotter then 90 deg it will activate the out let once the ac gets the room below 90 again it will turn the ac off .

but if a heater is placed in the mix , and you set it to the same 90 deg once your room got 90 ( if it did at all ) it would then activate the heater causeing it to get hotter,,,, this is a problem

i will talk with a electrician friend about this and see how to maybe reverse something inside the thermostat or just get a diffrent thermostat . hummmmm

have to figure out how to get the thermostat to deactivate instead of activate once the desired tem is reached !
