i remember getting a lot of weird looks, and downright hostile looks, from some of the riders when we lined up for the start...like wtf is this old guy on a rigid steel bike with a bunch of pink crap on it doing up front? like they were pissed i was taking up a "real riders" spot...a lot of those same people came up to me afterward with a much different attitude...plus i rode my bike to the race, raced, and got back on and rode home after beers and burgers...

yay Im off....... I have a busy weekend..... ill have some future divers coming over to play in the bottom of the pool for a few hours..... I always teach them the basic skills to get there Open water cert....... and work on there buoyancy, but tomorrow Ill be the Dive-master on the Boat and pick up about 6 more dives for my dive log.... Being dive master is always fun..... its thrilling to back role off the boat with 150 feet of chain rode piled in my lap..... I only weigh 120 so i sink like a rock and end up dangling at the end or the chain till i can tie it off to the wreck...... Diving and growing are the two most rewarding pastimes....

when I was a kid, I dreamed of being able to work with Jacques Cousteau and his sons.

I've been certified twice in my life, once while in high school at the downtown ymca. It was an extremely good course but it was mostly swimming pool. I never did the open water dive (muddy Oklahoma lakes?!?) so I wasn't legit. I took another course when I was in the Army. I was stationed near Savannah.

Two of our three open water dives were in a couple of clear Florida springs and the basins they drained into, which was cool because we could float the streams under water and there were a lot of manatees.

The third dive, a ocean dive, was unnerving though. It was to a telephone cable reef off of Palm Beach somewhere. The guy told us to keep hold of the anchor cable all the way to the bottom because the Gulf current was several knots strong. Pffft, I thought, several knots, whats that? Like 2 miles an hour?

I back rolled in, promptly had my mask ripped off of my face and literally had to hand over hand my way down the anchor line. It felt like I was in a hurricane. Fortunately, it was almost completely calm along the bottom. My gauge showed i used almost 20% of my air just getting to the bottom.

I spent the rest of the dive stressing on what would happen if I got picked up by the current. Even on the surface, I would have been out of sight in less than a couple of minutes. Humbling to say the least. Then on the boat afterwards, one of the group was telling us about the shark they had seen away from the group. The thrill was gone for me.

Glad you enjoy doing it. My mind thinks in worst case scenario mode, so it wasn't for me.

I like to watch lion fish hunts on youtube. Little bastards.

the lion fish doing the hunting or being hunted? I worked at the zoo as a kid and one of our displays had lion fish. They'd kind of float up near a goldfish and then, zip, the goldfish disappeared. Interesting that they're taking over some parts of the ocean eco-systems.

I like to watch lion fish being speared.

In times like that Ona calm is what you need and clear thought processes..... It is the most hostile environment safety and knowledge like in growing can and will save your life..... We drift dive... In other words we find those currents and ride them to the bottom...... And the boat goes about 5 miles down current and we ride those currents back to the top and the boat...... It's very dangerous... Especially for un seasoned divers.... You have to feel the currents and and become one with them..... They will on good rides take you 8 to 10 miles..... Being calm means you can conserve your nitrox breathe slowly and calm and relax your body the water will tell you how to move...... You were put in water you were not prepaired for.... That's on your professional divers you were with.... If you were with us we only dive one of us and one student....it's one pro... And a student..... One on one training and diving....there is nothing I mean nothing on earth that can shake my calm and extreme focus under water......i can and have saved many lives.... Things go wrong in the water.... People sometimes freak out or have medical issues..... Chance Favors the Prepaired Mind.....

Yikes lol, I used to be a drunk sometimes.

Yeah my accident was a motor vehicle accident, I was driving a pickup truck. I was drinking with a friend and my cousin a couple months before I was gonna turn 22. I dropped them off then decided to sleep in my truck for a bit, I woke up and decided to drive home. I made it about 3 mins from the house when I fell asleep and went off the road. I woke up and jerked the wheel and the truck fishtailed and ended up on the other side of the road. Truck caught fire, I broke my neck, was burned and lost my feet shortly after. I'm doing great now though!, I now walk on prosthetic legs and do an awesome job with them!! Just have the occasional skin sore which I'm going through now. So if that happens I have to limit the use of the prosthetic, or not wear it at all to let it heal properly.

Okay end of ramble!, have a great boat day!

Damn that sucks glad you have been able to get on with life. My wife worked for a really cool lady, she lost a leg in a rollover accident, jeep with no hardtop. She wound up marrying the guy who made her prosthetic. I know I used to get blackout drunk throughout my 20s. Many night's i shouldn't have made it. Now in my late 30s I can drink responsibly, but I rarely do, just doesn't appeal to me much.

Man, that's a rough path Bobbo. I love the way you sound about things though. Very accountable and upbeat. Good on you for keepin' on keepin' on.
