ok, so they jumped into the water with the engine running and no ladder - but what about the laptop? And the shred sail?

I have little to no experience around boats, but is there really no way to get back on if you forget to put down the ladder?

On average, for those who know, how far would the water level be from any vantage point?

Edit...and is it engine running as in the boat was in forward motion, or as in it was idleing?

that would be almost my biggest fear,i'ed go on my parents boat and stuff, but i'ed always be scared to go sleep in the cabin, cuz i was afraid that when i woke up,the boat would be empty and i'ed be in the middle of the ocean all by myself, that would fucking suck

on that cat I'm pretty sure you could climb back on, the swim platflorms are pretty low. I don't think they all 3 woulda' gone for a swim with the motor running & all sails up. Lots of sketchy asian fisherman/poachers off the coast but pirates would take the valuables, definitely the electronics. Pretty wierd.

Law of the sea, finders keepers. A 40 foot catamaran is an awesome vessel. It wasn't pirates cause they would had looted that fucker for sure, probably like someone posted before went in for a swim but Captain Dumbass left the engine running.

Even if there is a reasonable explanation it would be so creepy to find a boat like that on the open sea. The boarding party that found her had to have a really, really strange vibe we can only imagine...

It's really not all that odd to find abandoned boats in the middle of the ocean. I mean don't get me wrong, it's never a good thing, but not all that bizarre. Shredded sail, which they'd been more descriptive. My bet is they went through one hell of a storm and their rigging got fucked up. What's got me curious is why was their engine running? I mean they did have sails, so why waste the gas once you're outta the marina?

Ok guys it turns out the crew that found this ghost ship was really inside a large bath tub, so the boat that they found turned out to be a toy =/

they called it a trip of a life time...well that means they told all their friends about it....that means if anyone had anything against these rich guys this would be the time to seek revenge...

Search for 'ghost yacht' crew ends
POSTED: 10:51 p.m. EDT, April 21, 2007

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- Police on Sunday suspended their search for the crew of a yacht found drifting off Australia's Great Barrier Reef with sails up, engine running and food on the table, saying there was little chance of finding the three men.

Police believe skipper Des Batten, 56, and brothers Peter and James Tunstead, aged 69 and 63, may have been swept off the Kaz II when it hit rough seas last Sunday.

"Unfortunately ... it's supposedly almost a week since they've gone missing. (It's) quite difficult to survive without adequate food or water," rescue worker Phil Dowler told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

Queensland police said in a statement its decision to suspend the air and sea search was "based on expert medical advice which suggests the men could not have survived this long in the water."

The men sent no distress calls, and their plight was not known about until Wednesday when a coastal patrol plane spotted the catamaran drifting some 95 miles offshore.

Rescuers who boarded the vessel Friday said it appeared to have been abandoned suddenly. The lights and engines were running, and there was even food and cutlery laid out on the table -- but no sign of the crew.

The yacht's headsail was shredded but there was no other sign of damage. An emergency beacon, three life jackets and a dinghy were found on board.

Investigators who examined the catamaran's global positioning system said it appeared to have been drifting with the wind and currents since last Sunday, when the men may have hit rough seas.

The men reportedly bought the boat in the northeastern town of Airlie Beach, and that they set sail from there last Sunday. The crew was planning to sail around northern Australia to Western Australia state. All were experienced sailors.

That's the end of that S & R....
