Getting Decent Macros with Cheap Cameras ?

I have a Powershot 1400.

It's one of those $60 cameras that runs on AA batteries.

Supposedly it has 5x Optical.

My old Nikon camera (battery door is busted) that DID take good close-ups only had 3x Optical.

Does anybody know a way to get decent macros using the 1400, or similar Canon cheapo digi. cameras ?

Hi there :D
I have a Canon PowerShot SX200 IS... but it's a 12x. I love that great little thing (wasn't cheap though)!
The macro works fine when not zooming in but I haven't figured out how to properly use the supermacro option yet. The distance is crucial (sometimes it's more, sometimes less??) as well as the light. And I have problems shooting my dog because of the black fur... completely messes up something and the pics look blurred.

You can find some example photos in THAT thread (mostly taken with the macro option).
The bumblebee and the wasp were a pain to shoot because each time I closed in on them... so I had to use the normal option and zoom in.
