Getting bullied= Commiting S*icide?

Recently in America there has been many stories in the media about young people getting bullied, then commiting suicide.

Suicide has been with humanity since the start of time. I know the news coverage influences one's perception, but are we in the middle of a suicide bubble?

I'm curious to know why suicide seems to be such an option for the younger generation. I would love to find out why that is.

What is it about today's modern society that pushes some to the edge?

I wonder about that kid at Rutgers that killed himself because he was outted as being gay.

Being gay in 2010. The kid doesn't live in Iran.

Why did he feel compelled to take the ultimate step.

This week my man AC 360 will be doing a series about bullying.
I hope for some answers.

here's why todays kids (imo) are going to hell in a handbasket

I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

He wasn't just outed...his room mate broadcast an encounter he had over the net. That is crossing a big line. If I was shy, insecure and already having issues about my sexuality, I may jump too. Don't even pretend you can understand or rationalize how humans feel or how they deal with personal issues, everyone does it differently. Bullying leaves scars...even decades later. Bullies aren't cool, just pathetic.

Suicide was not anything new when I was in school.

Pressure hits you differently when you are that young.

Zen Master has a very good quote to consider.

Much like crime suicide is down but the reporting of it is up so it seems more prevalent than it really is.

From suicide.org

The suicide rate has decreased from the 1950-1980 rate of 13.2 to the present rate of about 11.

The suicide rate for ages 5-24 (youth suicide) increased dramatically from 1950 to the early to mid 1990s but then began to decrease thereafter.

The suicide rate for ages 45-85+ decreased significatnly from 1950 to present.

thats just it though... pressure...

nobody was threatening to kill him, or harm his family, or leaving homophobic shit around his place.

kids cant handle it today. Its like if they have to lift a finger and actually WORK or put in real knowledge, its difficult for them, instant gratification is screwing us all because nobody realizes the steps it takes to get through things.

whats worse, is that if this guy wasn't just 'confused' and was full blown gay, he's ASHAMED of his life... that sad honestly.... gay/straight it doesn't matter, you shouldn't live a life of shame, be proud for what you do, stand up for what you believe, THATS another reason our country is so fucked now.... nobody stands up for their beliefs anymore.

I often wonder if i was "Lucky" to be bullied in the Pre-internet era.

After my beat down, it was over.

I'm happy that after my bullying, some kid in Oslo wasn't watching the video of my beating posting snarky comments.

The world isn't yet as tolerant as you seem to think it is...

wonder what jobs bullies go for when they've grown up?

Alot of my ex-bullys sorta grew out of it.
It turns out alot of them were dealing with a bunch of pain.
They tended to have tough home lives. They acted out.

Some now have remorse. Some just didn't realize that they had such an impact on others.

While others believed that they were kids just being kids.

the world? of course not, there are some crazy ass motherfuckers out there that think blowing up a building because you burnt a book is alright....

however this was a quality student at a quality university, an aspiring musician.

I get that back in some Louisiana bayou that the general opinion might be "no homos", but in any major metropolitan city, the majority of people just quite frankly dont give a shit about gay anymore.... so in other words, people with daily access to the real world, media/news/etc, are as a majority NOT homophobic people that grab pitchforks and torches at the first sign of one. Sure people in line at starbucks might giggle after they see a flaming, overzealous and pompous gay guy ordering a drink with a lisp. But thats usually the end of it. You don't see Ellen DeGeneres running for cover when she steps out of her house.....

On occasion has it gotten to a level where physical harm has come to gays? sure it has, same for blacks and asians and many other "different" people....

the only people that care about "gay or not" are gays themselves and the religious zealots that think its a "crime against god"

I agree with what Zen Master quoted from Fight Club. A lot of that makes sense in our modern world.

Yes, posting someone's sexual encounter on the internet is definitely against the law, unless you have their explicit permission. The charges of invasion of privacy are well-earned.

This dude killed himself - so it goes to show how weak he truly was, and how he couldn't face the choir. I've been in the depths of depression and pill addiction, and even that compounded with serious family issues made me CONTEMPLATE leaving this earth, but I would never, ever kill myself because it is the coward's way out of dealing with life's problems.

Today's politically correct world wants someone to blame, at all times. CNN's comment section has people calling for the MURDER of these individuals because "what they did drove this kid to commit suicide"...his suicide is NOT their fault; yes, what they did was ignorant and in invasion of privacy...but nowhere in law does it state that when someone commits suicide, you blame a bully or someone who made a fucked up video of you.

How many idiots are embarrassed on YouTube every week? So, does that mean if all those idiots started committing suicide, that all the YouTube commenters will be prosecuted for assisting or instigating a suicide now?

It's complete and utter bullshit, I'm sorry for the family of the kid who killed himself but he took the coward's way out. Fuck this political correctness in society, these 2 should be charged with nothing more than invasion of privacy and now that kid has to face his judge because he couldn't deal with an internet tape...sad.
