Be warned I owned an 06 and it was by far the worst vehicle I have ever owned!

Yes it is decent to ride, though nothing at all special aside from the unique horsepower/torque curve (gobs of torque right off the line but still an existent top end) Though mechanically the thing was absolute garbage, I generally do all the work on my vehicles, but it is just a horribly engineered and very un reliable machine so after realizing that I just decided to let the dealer take care of the things under warranty......

In the end I owned it for about a year, over half of which it was either at a dealer or inoperable, though I believe the dealer I used was partially to blame as they had the worst customer service I have ever encountered (at 5000 miles the engine decided to stop running and it took them 4 months to fix as well as lying to me on a daily basis)

I could go on for pages with my gripes on it but suffice to say I would advise you to stay as far as possible from that thing as possible. And another note if you have legs bigger than a 10 year old you won't be able to run frame sliders, so one tipover and that sucker is totaled!

Do yourself a favor and stick with the 999, with everyone picking up 1098s the market has become fairly saturated with used performance parts which will really wake up a stocker.

Or for the best of both worlds get a s4rs, that for a bit more money will rape the hell out of a s3! :headbange

good info. i love triumphs, well the idea and nostalgia of them i guess! i sold my honda nighthawk last year... pretty neat bike actually- they dont get much 'cool' factor but im a gearhead myself, and it was a great bike! shaft driven, worked liked a dream. that carbureted bike ran better at 20 years old then most of my injected cars have that were less then 10!

i wanted my next bike to be a triumph speedmaster... its a cruiser and thats what i want! but its not the first time ive heard that triumphs are a pain to work on... i might just go with a yamaha or somethin. im not a harley guy

yeah the Triumph triples get a bad write up in most of the bike mags
there bad for breaking down and general handling problems
best sticking to the Jap sports or supersports for relyability and easier to work on
I was brought up with Triumphs, nortons and BSA's and I still love them but for a day to day bike you can't beat the japs
(even Ducati's need a lot of attention just to keep them running smoothly)

Sorry about that

Actually, I'm hoping to work up to "Asshat"...one day...

In the meantime, here's my real ride:

I took this pic just now, just for you.
She's put up for the night (yes, in the house!), but I ride all year round... :headbange

I have not had the chance to ride a hm so I cannot give you a first hand account. I have however ridden a multistrada 1000 which shares the frame, engine, (the new ones have the 1100 mill) rear suspension, essentially everything but asthetics, and the front forks/brakes. The ms is a great sport touring bike, if I had a longer commute it would probably be in my garage, and aside from the hideous looks there is really nothing to fault it for. I have sat on a hm at a dealer and really don't like the seating position (handle bar in your lap) plus the price is pretty steep. For the same money as a base model hm I could get a barely used s4rs (king of all monsters with testa 999 motor lots of cf bits and ohlins suspension) though when all was said and done I got the 1098 and have not regretted it for a second.

Monsters are GREAT street bikes. The fact that they have been essentially the same bike since 1993, and Ducatis best selling model of all time is a testament to that.

I stress that they are a great street bike, as on a track just about anything else aside from a hardley will eat them for breakfast. But if you actually ride on the street they are pure joy. The air cooled 2v mill is a fantastic engine, yes on paper it has shit for power but in the rpms where you want to use a street engine it has FAR more power than any comprable 4cyl jap bike. For instance if you are just putting along and want to pass someone just give it some gas and off she goes, versus having to click down a few gears every time you want to accelerate, or just always keep the revs above 5k...

And while ducatis can be more expensive to maintain the 2v motor is very easy to work on, once you get comfortable with valve adjustments the only thing you will have to get done is tires. Also because there are so many out there you will never have a problem finding a part new or used (ebay or ducati.ms) for a fair price, and often times far cheaper than for jap bikes which use completely different components every few years.

The negitives, if you don't do your own work it will be a bit more expensive to maintain, the gas tank is very small, many people don't like the seating position (I do) and depending on your area they are a dime a dozen.

I am obviously a bit biassed towards ducs but having ridden dirt since age 10, street since 18, well over 150k miles of street and dozens of track days, and during my college years even going almost 2 years not owning a car, commuting on my ducati rain or shine 20 miles each way (900ss essentially a monster with a sadistic seating position) I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable on the subject...

And all that said theres nothing that a 2v moster can do that a sv650/1000 cannot, though if you park a sv1000 next to a s2r1000 good luck choosing the zook.

I think it is best explained by the fact that most motorcycle companies do more than just sporty bikes, shitty cars, musical instruments, electronic components etc. Naturally they take the same approach to building bikes as they would anything else, make it complete the task as best as possible and with as little maintenence as possible, and as cheap as possible. Where as italians care not only that it can perform the task but HOW it does it, and how it makes you feel.

It would be like comparing say a ferrari 360 to a c5 z06, on paper they are virtually the same except the corvette is 1/4 the price and is much cheaper to maintain, but to anyone who has driven both any comparison to the level of enjoyment you get is an absolute joke.

Right on man, a friend of mine has a pretty decent stable of vintage brit iron. To this day there is nothing more terrifyingly fun than tearing up trails on his bsa 441 victor. The combination of a big thumper with nothing left in the muffler, archaic suspension, and cable actuated drum brakes is nothing short of magic :headbange
