Gender dysphoria and the trans movement.

Transgender people prescribed gender affirming hormones are at significantly lower risk of depression, a new study shows. The US researchers looked at nearly 3600 transgender and non-binary patients, finding that over fifteen percent had moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms. After two years of followup, those who were prescribed hormones had a significantly lower risk of depressive symptoms. The researchers suggest that this happens because of the physiological changes caused by hormones, as well as reductions in gender dysphoria leading to better social functioning.

If a depressed man took large doses of testosterone, you think it would help his depression? It certainly would in most cases.

But what about the potential consequences of long term use. Could the risks outweigh the benefits? Now apply that to a minor who is still developing and tell me that’s a great idea

Testosterone is not a treatment for depression. It does improve mood in some elderly men.

You're just speculating. You have no idea about risks/benefits. If a young person can live a better life, with less depression then my opinion is yes, that's a great idea.

This search found a robust international consensus in the peer-reviewed literature that gender transition, including medical treatments such as hormone therapy and surgeries, improves the overall well-being of transgender individuals. The literature also indicates that greater availability of medical and social support for gender transition contributes to better quality of life for those who identify as transgender.

. ... . .. ... . ... . ..

Research Findings

1. The scholarly literature makes clear that gender transition is effective in treating gender dysphoria and can significantly improve the well-being of transgender individuals.

2. Among the positive outcomes of gender transition and related medical treatments for transgender individuals are improved quality of life, greater relationship satisfaction, higher self-esteem and confidence, and reductions in anxiety, depression, suicidality, and substance use.

3. The positive impact of gender transition on transgender well-being has grown considerably in recent years, as both surgical techniques and social support have improved.

4. Regrets following gender transition are extremely rare and have become even rarer as both surgical techniques and social support have improved. Pooling data from numerous studies demonstrates a regret rate ranging from .3 percent to 3.8 percent. Regrets are most likely to result from a lack of social support after transition or poor surgical outcomes using older techniques.

5. Factors that are predictive of success in the treatment of gender dysphoria include adequate preparation and mental health support prior to treatment, proper follow-up care from knowledgeable providers, consistent family and social support, and high-quality surgical outcomes (when surgery is involved).

6. Transgender individuals, particularly those who cannot access treatment for gender dysphoria or who encounter unsupportive social environments, are more likely than the general population to experience health challenges such as depression, anxiety, suicidality and minority stress. While gender transition can mitigate these challenges, the health and well-being of transgender people can be harmed by stigmatizing and discriminatory treatment.

7. An inherent limitation in the field of transgender health research is that it is difficult to conduct prospective studies or randomized control trials of treatments for gender dysphoria because of the individualized nature of treatment, the varying and unequal circumstances of population members, the small size of the known transgender population, and the ethical issues involved in withholding an effective treatment from those who need it.

8. Transgender outcomes research is still evolving and has been limited by the historical stigma against conducting research in this field. More research is needed to adequately characterize and address the needs of the transgender population."

No I’m not speculating. Also, that study was done on adults. No one in this thread gives a shit what adults choose to do.

Almost all this back and forth is over trumps new policy to ban these treatments for minors. You wouldn’t know that though because you showed up late

2 am and you’re up citing white papers ? Do you know what any of that means, I thought you weren’t a doctor 🤣🤣.

Which one of those studies is showing the safety and efficacy of these treatments being used on minors ? Long term health outcomes of hormone blockers used on minors ?

“From 107 583 patients, matched cohorts demonstrated that those undergoing surgery were at significantly higher risk for depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and substance use disorders than those without surgery. “

You conveniently ignore this though 👇🏼

i didn't miss that last one, as i've said more research is needed...

and i didn't miss the ojes jems posted either, from the conclusion:

"underscoring the need for ongoing, gender-sensitive mental health support for transgender individuals’ post-surgery."

and i even commented about it up there, as you can see... so no, again, i didn't miss it.

Bullshit response. You cited some papers you didn’t even read trying to paint the picture these therapies improve mental health. Then your response to jems rebuttal is some bullshit that it needs more study ?

I’m not even sure why you keep going. The argument here is about wether these therapies should be available to minors. No one in this thread cares what adults do.

some bullshit
i never said it was bullshit, but it certainly isn't good evidence that we need to commit human rights violations and shit like that... and it certainly doesn't prove that the transitioning itself was the cause of any negative outcomes, especially when looking at the stuff i posted
