Gels as Medium/Nutes?

M

medi-useA

Are there gels th@ are used as growth mediums or as nutrient delivery?

I was thinking about gels and their uses...I figure the animal based gelatins are out for health reasons....

But if one could find Vegetable gelatins...would it be useful in outdoor growing?

Dig your hole and fill it with your manures/ferts of choice and plant the plant.
Then dig 4 holes in a square around the plant but perhaps 3 feet out or more..
Dig the holes 3 feet and fill the bottom 1 foot with flowering nutrient/vegetable gel mix and backfill

I was thinking the roots would be out th@ far when the plant flowers....

Am I wildly off in my estimations?

Great Idea!
Unfortunetly, like most most good inventors, there's been one before you with the same idea...

Soil moist and a ton of other companies have the most popular 'gel medium' of as they and most call it, polyacrimide water crystals. They're a gel like crystal that will absorb like 200 time its weight in water and release it only when the surrounding medium is more dry ( ie when in drought and the plant is thirsty).

Along with the water absorbed, they'll also release anything else that was in the water when absorbed. Meaning a nute solution will be released with nutes when needed.
Soil Moist created a product like this already by filling the crystals with nute water, then evaporating the water. But I'd just fill the regular ones with my own high quality nute water.

There is an organic version of this that I use, forget the name Seba or something. Comes in a clear bottle w/ blue label and light brown crystals that look a little like rice. I would use these if you're planning to smoke you're plant. They work just as well, just for not as long (only 1 season).

If you're wanting to use these as per the OP idea, go with with the polyacrimide crystals. It would technically work, but it would be near impossible to change nutes, get O2 to the roots effeciently, and a million other drawbacks, or else more would use them.

What they might be good for, though, is cloning.
Moisten them with a cloning solution and just stick the cuts in. You could wash most off after rooting for Hydro use, or even leave them on for other mediums.
Let us know if you decide to use them...
