After using the Hempy bucket method for the past couple of years Ive decided to give a Super soil grow a go.
My decision to go with soil is based mainly on the hope of less maintenance and particularly an easier watering routine. My schedule is hectic these days and not having to worry about daily watering/feeding is appealing right now.
Ok. From the start.
All the ingredients needed to create a Super soil mix were not available to me here where I live so I bought a pre-mixed bag of Super soil amendments on eBay. The seller had what looked like a good mix with great reviews and his mix made 60 gallons of soil. Perfect. Just what I needed.
I bought 9 bags of Fafard Organic potting soil and mixed that with approximately 60 lbs of my own worm castings . Basically a 3/1 ( by volume) mix of the two.
Into that I mixed the purchased Super soil amendments along with some Perlite to loosen it up a bit.
I used a round plastic trash can to mix the soil . Measured the ingredients, put the top on the can with a bungy cord to hold it in place and then put it on it's side and rolled it around. Worked pretty slick with no waste.
I let the soil sit for approx. four weeks in order for it to "cook" a while.
The Mr. Nice x Mystery seeds were a freebie received a couple years ago. I hate seeing seeds go to waste and from what information I could gather it seemed as though the majority of these plants would finish rather quickly compared to the other seeds I have to choose from, which was what I was looking for.
So I gave them a go. I also have some Cannabiogen Sandstorm seeds so I started three of them also.
A paper towel soak gave me 5 out of six of the Mystery Surprise and all three of the Sandstorm to play with. I put them in Solo cups with a simple seed starter mix and had their little green heads poking out on May12.
A couple weeks of veg under a fluorescent shop light and they were ready for their final homes. Root development was very aggressive and they were definitely ready for a move. By then they were looking a little sad and root bound.
I was needing containers for this grow and all I could find around here were round ones. I didnt want to order grow bags online and I thought about using milk crates lined with that black plastic mulch. Didnt like that idea. Seemed messy to me.
One day while food shopping I was standing in line at the checkout and noticed the reusable bags they sell. $1.29 each and they looked just the right size. I bought a few.
They worked out perfect. Slightly porous, they drain water well and they fit perfectly in the milk crates while holding 5-6 gallons of soil each. I used a red hot nail to poke a few holes in the bottoms of the bags to ensure drainage.
Fifteen days after germination on May 27th I put the plants into the Super soil.
I used a soluble Myco. inoculate I bought from Paul Stamets at Fungi Perfecti, giving them a good strong drench when transplanted.
Put them under a 400 watt MH and let them ride.
Here they are at 25 days after about a week+ in the soil. Happy with a 18/6 light schedule and the addition of a fan to give them a nice breeze.
The Ganja Rebel seeds are the taller five in the photo.
The Mr. Nice x M.S. plants are certainly more vigorous than the Sandstorms, as expected. The Sandstorm is known for it's slow veg characteristics and needs at least four weeks of veg.
I FIM'ed the M.N. x M.S. plants two nights ago in order to control some of the height and make them bush out a bit as they were looking a bit leggy to me. Now that they are established and ready to take off I think I will put them under a 600 wt. bulb and then a 1000 right before being put into flower.
My tap water here is almost neutral in ph and very pure. Im hoping to be able to simply water these plants but may have to watch for any cal/mag needs.
Thanks for looking! They will be getting another week or two of veg. I will update as time goes by and things develop.
