I never thought trucks replaced planes, ships or trains; it's just a plain old fact that 99% of the goods sold in the USA see the back of a truck in it's lifetime. And when that lifetime is up, part of its final voyage will be in a garbage truck & then perhaps a barge. Or the hook of a tow truck & maybe shipped off by rail as I've seen many rail cars loaded with scrap heading to the ports for export to China.
I see more varied rail uses up here in minnesota than all my years in ny where trains mostly delivered commuters (by the millions daily) in & out of nyc. The huge trucking freight & distribution yards in new jersey were along the freight train lines, the modes are hopelessly entwined if you ask me.
