Fungus Nats

im tellin y'all for 19.99 you can have peace of mind about these things. the beneficial nematodes hunt down these gnats. I had a horrible infestation a few months ago. infected my main batch of soil, seedlings, everything. they sucked, were everywhere, and most of the so-called solutions I used on this website did jack (soap on top of soil, top dress with perlite, let your medium dry out, etc). the nematodes worked within days and I have seen maybe a single gnat since then. one box of nematodes goes a long way as well. just use it whenever you mix up your soil or break open your bag.

It seems they have to learn the hard way dd.........nemotodes are the only sure fire way to get rid of them

Im aware of the nematodes but I thought they were like 80 bux shipped cuz they had to be overnighted or sumthin like that, is that not the case? And nematodes are not the ONLY way to get rid of them according to what I have read. Im willing to give them a chance tho . Whats the best and cheapest place to order them?

Ok I just found them on homedepot.com for 20 bux. I wonder if the local home depot has them too. Im willing to bet they are a seasonal item so I'll check tommorow and if I have to I will just order them.

So you used the SCANMASK brand that says it kills 230 kinds of insects? Why does BGhydro.com say they need to be overnighted to make sure they live? They charge like 70 bux for em. Whats the difference?

Mine were $45 canadian for 50 million at a local greenhouse. They have to order them in cause they have a shelf live of a month at 41*.

no pest strips have worked for me flawlessly twice for gnats and mites. What I do is turn my ventilation off in dark period and the 1st day I put it in so the chemical builds up. 6 bucks!

no idea. the company that amazon co-operates with will get them to you in a hurry. from what I remember I was shocked at how fast they arrived and I guess that is why. on the box it states they can last for a while at room temp so I am not sure why bghydro says that.

Well....nothing seen on any of my stuff since treatment either, so I guess I'll stick with mine. I was very worried about the hydro roots (since that's where the gnats seemed to hang on out).......but not a one around now.

UPDATE:
Last night a few hours before my lights went out I treated all my flowering plants with Mosquito Dunks. I crumbled 8 of them up and sprinkled them in 16 five gallon buckets, so bout half a dunk per plant. Today I watered them all and I saw only a few plants with any gnats left. In fact I watered the first ten plants and saw only ONE gnat. The last 6 plants I saw maybe 5 total gnats. They always come out of the buckets when I water and fly around my face. This time that didnt happen. So I would have to say that in a matter of 16 hours or so the skeeto dunks have had a huge impact on the gnat population. I thought they would take at least a week to work but I was wrong. They work like a charm. Tommorow I will water lightly with neem oil to get to any that are left. For ten dollars per 8 pack of dunks, these are a bargain. They have BTI which is the main ingredient in Gnatrol which works for so many people. Give these mosquito dunks a chance and I think they will get rid of most of your gnats.

what does gnat larve look like?

I got some old coco laying around from last grow that i haven't gotten around to reuse and i noticed some lightweight, white looking foam pieces in my coco... not a ton of it but enough to wonder what it is.. there about half the size of a penny and some are lil smaller. They are real dry and crumble when pinched.

I hate those damn things. I always get those things, I guess I DONT use enough perlite either, best of luck with the situation.

So far the skeeto dunks have def helped get rid of maybe 75-80 percent of the gnats. Gonna go ahead and get the nematodes asap to get rid of the rest and be done with em once and for all.

I go to my local nursery and get the little predator bugs they sell for fleas and gnats. they go crazy for 2-3 days then no more gnats.

From wikipedia: "Fungus gnats are typically harmless to healthy plants, while their presence can be indicative of more serious problems."
I agree!
I had a bad infestation of fungus gnats on my house plants. I tried many kinds of venom but I solved the problem by completely changing the soil.
The problems were the poor quality soil and the overwatering (the soil inside the pot smelled of putrid).
Fungus gnat larvae eat putrid materials, they don't eat healthy roots.

I recently discovered a cure for these by accident. The last three grows I had a terrible infestation of these little bastards. They were so bad that they moved past the grow tents and I would find them throughtout the house (even in my cup of coffee sitting in the kitchen). Last year when I was growing clones only I used a product called PYOLA to control the spider mites. I have not needed to use anything the last 3 grows as I have grown from seed only. Well a northern lights clone was given to me from a freind 3 weeks ago, I was so paranoid about mites infesting the rest of my garden I took the pyola out again and did 2 good treatments. The nats have completely disappeared from the plants ( I just checked before posting this), I do not see a single one. I asked at my local grow shop a couple weeks ago and they said that it will work on adults but will not kill the larve.

I would like to state that I do not like using chemicals on my plants, and I do not think that I would use it much after switchin to 12/12. But I do not want anything to do with mites again as I have had problems with them on my clone grows. The indgredients in this stuff according to what the bottle says is: Pryethrins 0.5%, Canola Oil 89.5%, Inert Indredients 10%. I paid like $20.00 a couple of years ago for a 1 pint bottle from an online store ( I dont remember the name of the place).

Anyway this stuff is what was recomended by my clinic at a grow class that they offered. Does anyone else use this?

Every time I buy soil, I drag more home with me. Last time it was a bag of worm poo. Think I'll try the nematodes next time.

Horror of horrors...I got tired of them and mixed up some Liquid 7 in a mister bottle. I sprayed it everyday lightly on all soil surfaces.....Seems to be working slowly. I've ingested so much liquid 7 since childhood, should be immune to it. (I smell it and think Garden)

I remember my grandfather with his little bicycle pump looking garden sprayer. He loved that DDT! We had DDT rolling like a fog around here! Actually sprayed it on animals to keep off flies. I think he sprayed us a few times with DDT to keep off some mosquitoes in the garden.

That DDT really worked great though! LOL No flies on the screen doors.....
