fruit flies?

They bad? First time I have ever had bugs in my room, I don't think my compost was ready when I used.

Or hell, could they be something else? They are identical to fruit flies though, Used to raise loris(birds) and have seen billions of fruit flies over the years.

Fruit flies won't bother your plants BUT they can act as vectors for other pathogens that WILL.

Am I to take it you are using outdoor compost indoors? Yeek. I know some of you happy hippes are down with bringing partially-rotted rubbish back in the house, but I'd put it in a black trash bag in the hot sun for a few days first to kill off anything squirmy in there. I know, I know, that is SO not the point of compost... but 'live' compost should stay outdoors, or you should make a tea with it to bring inside, that contains only microorganisms, not bugs.

I do organic teas and usually do a better job with the compost, I just had to repot sooner than I anticipated. prolly just throw some of those sticky things for bugs in there

Probably fungus gnats, not fruit flies.

Bti (mosquito dunks/gnatrol/etc) will kill them safe, as will nematodes.

FG are not the worst pest.

BTW, the sticky things will never rid you of your problem, just indicate you have one and maybe keep the numbers down somewhat....

You sure? What would a fruit fly be attracted to in your garden? Any rotting fruit lying around?

Check the top inch of your soil, dig down and look to see if there are any larvae wriggling around, white body and dark head, like this:

If so, that's fungus gnats.

Heya Pete I think he's saying that he suspects they came from incompletely-rotted raw compost- so that would make sense.
MAN does that grub look ugly.

I actually have a "pet" black widow, If worse comes to worse I will put that bitch in there, the flies will be gone from fear alone.

Sadly that spider prefers the living room. I found it out there the very next day. I keep trying to remember to get a sticky trap at the store...

i think i may also have some fruit flies...they were all dying on the tray away from the plants...any ideas to how they got in? they werent there 24 hours ago? what should i do...none of them were on the plants

Whether they are Fungus gnats or Fruit flies, (I've had to deal with both of them at one point or another) this will kill them:

Hahaha!! If only killing fungus gnats were that easy. That stuff won't touch them. It might kill a few of the ones flying around if they land in a puddle of it and drown.

Read the label, clearly states fruit flies AND fungus gnats. The dead fuckers in my veg room don't lie...

where do i spray it?

What I did was scratch the surface of my medium (coco) and sprayed the topp layer until it was nice and soaked. And when I saw one on the wall, I'd spray it rather than chase it around swatting at it and risk knocking my light s down.
Trust me dude, it kills them.
Ants as well...

Btw, the first time I had an infestation was with fungus Gnats, my stupid ass thought flying ants were somehow finding their way into my room so I didnt think anything of it until full blown adult Gnats were crawling and flying all over the coco.
A fellow icmagger gave me this stuff and I diluted some in a gallon of water and watered my plants with it. That got rid of all of them and did not damage my plants one bit.
Second time I had Gnats, I knew what they were and I caught it early so all I did was use the spray. Again, all gone.
I have 2 kids and they drop food everywhere and Fruit flies were a constant battle. Now I hit 'em with the spray in mid flight and they die 15 seconds later. Also, I use the spray as a preventative measure now, once a week or so I'll spray down the floor of my room.
Like I said, it also kills ants.
I no longer have flying insects but I could demonstrate with an ant if you'd like...

PS, The spray has Pyrethrin in it.

on second look theyre probably closer to gnats than fruit flies...im going to wait til tomorrow and see if they re-emerge...this is the first sign of pests and im freaking out lol...if theres an organic way to take care of this problem let me know, so far all my plants seem fine, i checked the medium (ocean forest/light warrior mix) and didnt see any larvae but im not satisfied knowing these fuckers showed up outta nowhere
