I don't think I'd go above more than 18% at the absolute maximum. Anything more than that and I always found things to be more muddy in consistency than I like. EWC contains more humus than soil or compost alone and therefore hold much more waters. That results in a need for more aeration materials, which in turn gets you to a point where an extremely large portion of your substrate is inert. This isn't ideal for nutrient retention. Especially if your only drainage material is perlite, in which a significant portion of it will eventually float to the top of the soil resulting in some undesired compaction at the bottom of the bed. That's the main reason I started using a combination of different aeration amendments including permatil. I highly suggest that stuff. Love it.

With beds, the best route to go is like Weird and Lapides - just add worms and let them slowly work their way through the soil. Just another reason I suggest keeping castings at a lower % when building the soil - especially in a bed where you have the option to truly mimic nature.

yeah great points frank. i do have a mix of lava rock, expanded clay, pearlite and some other rocks in there currently. so, when i mix stuff up, say i do four cu ft of peat. ill say, ok 25% of that is 1 cu ft. so 1 cuft of ewc goes in, then 1 cuft of lava rock. so is that 18% or 20% or 25%? i know it ends up 18% but i always think of it as 25%. i just noticed that i think. hmm.
the plan is to have live worms in there by summer. this years goal is to go fully no till. so i was thinking the new bed might only get 10-15 % ewc and a few lbs of live worms

I think that'd be a better option. Not to mention, EWC are one of the most expensive soil inputs you can purchase. Add worms and let nature really sort itself out and through self regulation come into balance.

yeah i used to put a lot less ewc in before i started getting 40lb bags from a local bait shop for 5$.
so today i replaced the temporary metal halide bulb with a new hps. i decided to try replacing both my 1k with new cheap ipower bulbs, just to see whats what. at the time, hortilux 1000w super hps bulbs jumped from 54 to 59$ on amazon and i thought maybe new cheap bulbs are better than good old ones. well one of the lights arrived slightly broken of course. the ceramic tube around the supporting metal thing, the long one, eas cracked and chipped off on the end. there was some shit rattling around inside the bulb. seems amazon quit putting packing materials in with multiple item packages. i got a tarp in the same order and they were all loose in a huge box. next time i get bulbs online, ill be sure to get them by themselves.
anyway, the other one was fine and it looked brighter than the older hortilux bulb. i know the ipower bulbs are only good for a round or 2 but thats ok with me its just temporary.
plants also got tea tonight. photo update coming tomorrow. had some cold issues this week and it might have slowed everything down some.

vanilla phoenix - just a 400w mh for the solo cups - moms currently under t5s
seeded - thanks man!
the krowberry bagseed is coming along nicely, i wont be able to take cuttings from it until feb. but i am very excited to run it. if any of you have ever even heard of this cut, please pm me and tell me. uk growers, looking at you. my wife had the pleasure of moving some krowberry a decade ago. it is forever seared into my mind as the strongest purple. my single bagseed was pulled from a pound and set aside until now. hopefully i can do her justice. if shes decent im going to work the bejeesus out of her.

You want some killer seeds to sort - hit your GG#4 with that chemsour x sscdh male.

You'll be sorting plants that make massive flowers. Seriously. Don't skip your opportunity to maximize the pollen that male can put out.

Larry OG x SSCDH - this is what Phillthy was working on before the male was lost -

Granted, your male is an outcross of the male used here - but to a very potent strong chem family plant. Should still pair up really well with plant like gg#4 that already has great yield. You'll find some crazy frosty high yielding potent plants. If it can blow up an OG like that, imagine what it can do to an already high yielding plant like the glue. Winners for sure.
