I have some (a little) experience taking cannabis on planes. A few years ago now when I was younger,dumber and had less to loose.
On a cheap flight from UK-Belgium. I took a small amount packed into the back of a lip balm dispenser packed into my toiletries bag. I figured the smell of shower gel,cologne, shampoo & deodorant would help cover the smell. Not the most sophisticated of methods but it worked and made the trip a lot more enjoyable. The 3 grams or so I packed in there lasted me and my australian friend the whole weekend and went well with all the beer and chocolate.
This time was accidental. I had been in amsterdam a few days smoking and spending up large. Moments after arriving at amsterdam train station a departing spanish dude gave me about 10 bags of various bud/hash. He said "I'd take these if I could! Do you guys want them?" I gladly accepted and these were enjoyed along with the many other strains I smoked that weekend. I kept count of how many bags I had and ended up with 50+. When it came time to depart I counted my inventory to discover I was missing a bag. I politely asked a coffee shop owner before unloading my luggage contents onto the coffeeshop floor looking for the missing bag. I couldn't find it and had to head to the station to catch the train to the airport so gave up looking and assumed I'd smoked or misplaced it.
At the airport I gave my stash away to a group of excited young tourists coming out of arrivals. Me and my mate happily jumped on our flight from amsterdam to heathrow.
Later that night I was looking through my amsterdam souvenirs reminiscing when I discovered a bag of hash folded inside my coffeeshop guide map. Holy crap I thought. Officially smuggled hash across international borders.
In my opinion taking bud on national transport is child's play. It's only when you go international it gets messy. I'm not sure what it's like in the USA but I can't imagine there would be much security flying interstate. I found there was virtually no border security around much of europe.
