Flowering.... trimming fan leaves off....leaving fan leaves on

I have wondered about this and though I used to reside on the other side of the fence I can say with the sfv og I run and the gsc that in a scrog tray that removing the larger fan leaves after the stretch has helped my yeilds which weren't to shabby anyhow, and given me better air flow. The reason I chime in is because I used to be the one shouting "They need those for food!"

awesome posts but majority if not all seem to be using small pots which affect yield, would be great to see some experiments with max yield pots

I think the reason you are seeing this done in small pots is that most people that need to defoliate do so because of working in small spaces.

Funny thing how so many people mention you get better air flow which of course you will, but by removing to much leafs what really happens to a plant first off leafs store energy , they breath so leafs are important for gas exchange that is why good air movement is needed to rid the gases from around the leafs yea understand ??? so having no leafs you might as well not be runnning any fans cause plant is being choked out anyways hardly breathing
in the light there is a net intake of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and a net output of oxygen from respiration
in the dark there is a net intake of oxygen for respiration and a net output of carbon dioxide
I am sure there is a fine line before you start choking out a plant ( it can't breath )
you ever wonder what would happen if you pulled that plastic hose out of the nose,
from one of them guys in a wheel chair with 02 bottle strapped to his ass watch his eyes light up and probably struggle to breath no different then a plant its a living breathing thing

To me i really don;t care what a person does to his plants :thank you:

But in hydro with 3+ feedings per day (mine get fed ~ 6xs /24 hours during flower) you don't need to store energy in large leafs

Dr. Fever , I only remove large leaves that sit on tops and cause the pistils to rust or when touching one and other moisture builds up between the layers. I have just found that the leaves further down flutter a bit more and air doesn't stagnate so much that I need a fan on the floor. I have been taking pictures now that I joined up so I will try post them to exemplify what I mean. I still do not believe in "raping" a plant of it's leaves, just that removal of some could be beneficial in some situations. I know the science behind respiration and the job and location of stomata.

I'm sure different strains react differently when stipping those big fan leaves off. I would think defoliating indica dominant strains would be more benificial. Just the large ones on top blocking light. Would this be correct?

you know you guys can just cut the part of the fan leaf off that is blocking the nexttop inter node of the next lower branch. you dont have to take the whole leaf. see like this.

I grow LA CONFIDENTIAL, a 100% indica strain with big fan leaves and a short bushy stature. The seed company DNA Genetics themselves say that you should trim the large fan leaves later in flower to allow light to reach the lower buds sites, thus increasing yield.

That has to say something!

I'm one for leaving fan leaves on as long as possible, allowing them to do their job, as sugar factories.
Having said that, I also gently trim after stretch because I have seen by experience of doing both, that opening up the plant tightens and finishes the lower nugs at a higher percentage than not trimming.

All that lower bud becomes hash anyway, I just get more of it,lol.

The large Fan leaves support the frame and structure of the plant threw transition in flower, once the stretch is over they are primarily useless unless the plant is not healthy or has a diminished root Zone, the plant will try and survive off of the large fans at that point.
The Bud sight creates its own leaf structure as flower ensues to support the growth of the bud sight.

Whatever DHF, Ichabod, Heath, Arminus, Farmhouse Cat and all the others do over in the vert section is the way to go. And yes, they pluck like mofos. But their shit is dialed like crazy. Just my $.02.

Here is 3.5 zips of Katsu Bubba kush...
View Image]View Image[/URL]
What is interesting is that I got that from one plant, of which I can fit 8 around my 600w light comfortably.. This translates to about 1.12 gpw..

Even more interesting is the dry weight on the ChemD which is shaping up to be at least 4-5 zips.. This translates to about 1.49 gpw.

Im calling it, defoliation in veg primarily owns, while I do pull leaves in bloom, starting after the stretch and over the course of a week pulling all the rest..

I attribute alot of this to the vertical philosophy of growing, simply kills..

I wanted to ask how much time it took to get yoour 1.12 and 1.49. As in start day being the first day under big lights?

We have always believed the energy in = energy out idea. So IMO de leafing past the under trim/shaping is just taking energy away from then plant.

To expand on that... Kinda of.
and use it against you.
Haha

I was taught that when a fan leafs' stem changes color from green to purple/red, that thats a sign the leaf is taking more energy from the plant than it is capable of producing for the plant.

Energy in. Energy out. As you said.

I run vert and I pluck and trim very strategically. you need fan leaves because they are food making factories, but you need to expose tops to get a lot of buds. it is way more efficient then trimming all lower branches and having one big top nug. have a wall of big top nugs instead.

i take leaves off superskunk,to free up sites for bush growing works for me,the last week i take all big leaves off and the light just gets lower down for sure

I thought I would do a quick update on the girls that I took everything off of. They have bounced back with no problem. New growth is popping out everywhere and they are stretching upwards. Here they are in the original order of appearance in my earlier post on the 12th page of this thread.

^once you go very you never go back. It is cheaper to run and yields more. nomore buying cool tube magnum hoods for 150 a piece. you need to live in a cold place and have lots of space to do it right though.
