How would that stuff really work? FLIR senses differences in the surface temps. This stuff looks kinda like the foil covered bubble wrap that's sold as insulation.

FLIR cannot see through your walls. They cannot see "hot spots" where each of your bulbs are. They cannot count the number of lights your are running...

As spaced said, FLIR measure SURFACE TEMPERATURES. So the only thing they can see is if the outside surface of the building is warmer than other rooms or surroundings.

With proper ventilation and cooling, there will be no change rise in the temp of the exerior wall.

ya i sure would like to know how. i have my hoods vent to the attic the room is not in the house. but i did put a fan in the attic to remove hot air . the room is 10x10 and i have a hot water heater in there . i put up a wall with a door to seperate the hot water heat , now the room is 8x10 . im thinking of hooking a y to the vent on top of the hot water heater and run the attic heat out with the hot water heater exaust.

Good deal. I would worry about a warm shed looking out of place. Why is that guy heating his shed? It could easily look suspicous.

Tieing into the water heater exhaust stack sounds like a good idea, but be careful. The balance of airflow and the draft that draws out the combustion gases from the water heater could be affected. I've never done it, but I guess that it would be safest to put the Tee as high up as possible.

Correct. Prevent backdraft by ensuring an proper pitch on duct run. It should never 'dip' or slant downwards. Only and always up and out. That's some toxic fumes. It could easily kill you, let alone your plants...

No kidding, hundreds of people die in their homes every year due to faulty appliance venting. Colorless, odorless and will kill you quickly without you even realizing it.

I personally wouldn't even consider tapping into a dangerous vent like that.

I had posted in the security forums somewhere about keeping the heat off the walls. Can't find the post though, I didn't start it.

Anyhow, I got to thinking after watching barry cooper and that other show, dea. They were showing heat being exhausted out of a house in coopers. Showed up as like a big white swirl coming off the side of a house. He said to use a dryer vent IF YOU HAD TO vent out, but otherwise, pump the exhaust back into your cold air return so that it goes throughout the house and doesn't show any areas of heat buildup.

In the dea show, they were picking up the basement on live flir - the foundation of the house was exposed a couple feet and it was white whereas the neighbors was lighter grey. So that, combined with a slew of other evidence, is what got them popped. Selling, high traffic, being fools in general probably.

But what about the wall of the room that the lights are in? Even if you exhaust it right you're still going to have a hot spot if the lamps or ballasts are running in a space that has a foundation wall. If you have a house with a basement, it's more than likely that you're going to have at least a foot of the block wall exposed. So, in other words, don't put your grow on an exterior wall of the basement. Keep it in the center. It should also make venting into the cold air return easier as furnaces are typically centered in the house.

Just wanted to ramble off a few thoughts. I'm guilty - I have to move my space too. But it is right under a door where you can't see the foundation wall - half of it at least. I did put up a 1" thick piece of blueboard, so hopefully that helps. I have seen dark black choppers around here before just kinda gliding about 100' or so maybe above our neighborhood. I was down for the summer though but it still fucked me up a bit.

hey everyone ,thanks for all the great advice .well i ended up not putting the y on the hot water heater exaust .for now it just blows down from the attic next to the hotwater heater .im sure if po pos are using flir around here ,they would see alot of air blowing out the door because the shed dont have a door yet . 4 ft from the main doorway i put up a wall with a door . in that 4ft area next to the doorway(the main door) is the hot water heater , it does not run straight up to the attic . the vent goes up about 1ft and has a 90 and goes threw the wall then another 90 and then up on the out side .

if i can keep the temps down to around 70 , do you think i could it would be safe to run the exaust back into the room . the room is only a shed (no central heat and air) off of the house .
would it still show up on flir .
can you rent a flir , probably just po pos and army and such huh.

is there any way i can check to see how much heat is coming off the shed ( like a flir) ???/

roofers use surface temp guns, it's not IR, but it will give you the surface temp of anything you point and aim it at.

that's give you an idea of what your outside structure looks like at night.

your main give away is gonna be the exhaust coming out. Did you say it just exhausted into the attic? if so, not a GREAT deal of concern, your grow isn't that large, and heightened attic temps can also be attributed to dryer exhaust and bathroom exhaust. Just make sure the exhaust is pointed INTO the body of the attic and not onto the roof, cause that would show more of a centered heat signature where as pointing the exhaust into the body would show more of a distributed heat source.

I'm obviously no expert, ran 2,400 watts in a room before, and gettin ready to run it again. No matter what you do, every time you hear a chopper fly over, your butthole is gonna tighten up, that's life doing these things, prosecuted like a violent criminal while never hurting a soul.

In my county, the sheriff was forced with a 12 million dollar budget cut, so what do they do? they lay off sherriff's, close down a jail, and build a hangar and buy a second chopper....our tax dollars at work.....pfffftt....

My grow is small. I only have a 400 and a 600 in the shed. I did buy on of those digital temps, but it is a small one from radioshack for 10 dollars. It works good but, not like I would like. So, you don't think I should be concerned with the heat in the attic? Just vent it into the center of the attic. About three months ago there was a black chopper that hovered over the house, and I thought they were going to land in the yard. They stayed a few seconds, then left. I torn everything down. Haven't seen or heard anything since, but there was a drug bust that day about a quarter mile away. That was what the helicopter was for. I don't sell. It is just for personal, so there is no traffic at my house.
I do live in a small town that has a small airport ( by planes, crop dusters) not to far from my house. They don't fly over my house. I live a few miles from a military base also. Would the military use flir for the police?
