Not going to wrap it in some sort of metal screen or deterrent? What about your filter? Why not drill a lot more holes, say ones of different sizes? Would it not help keeping the sediments and other junk lower than just having two dozen large holes cut? The way im looking at it is, the smaller the holes the better, you'll lose surface area, but you wont have to worry about a twig or a rock from breaking through the filter, rather just the debry getting stuck, like it should in the first place?

Post some pics of your filter (new and used)! and of your reservoir!

I don't have any pictures of the old filter, but i can explain it, All it was, was the 3/4 polly hose sitting in the reservoir, with a small wire mesh screen wrapped around the hose. worked OK, but had to be checked often. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the reservoir.
All it is, is a Natural spring, that i made a good size holding pond/reservoir, and ran a 3/4 hose down hill.
After looking at my pictures I realized that the filter looks like it doesn't have a-lot of holes. I drilled more holes on the bottom, than the top, because my theory is most debris will be floating, or at the surface, so i made more holes on bottom than the top.

I use 3/4 polly hose, run it down hill to get gravity pressure. It goes 1000 ft down the hill, to the grow.
I then have a 3/4 to 1/2 pvc ball valve, for on/off water.
I run the 1/2 polly hose in loops, back to the main 1/2 line.
I then run 1/4 polly tube with 1/2gph drip emitters to each hole.
pretty simple,

can you please explain how your on/off works I don't understand how a 3/4 to 1/2 pvc ball valve, for on/off water. works as a stop and start function... how does it know when to water and when to stop... sorry this stuff is new to me... I normally carry my water great distances... I need something easier

I don't believe his watering system is automated, I believe he'd water manually unless he DIY'd some sort of motor to the nylon-sleeve ball valve. They require some sort of torque, which you probably wouldn't get out of a normal 12VDC motor...

Weird thing I learned a few months ago: apparently there are ceramic 'drippers' on the market that you bury with your plants, and when the root ball starts to tighten it triggers some sort of non-electrical switch which allows water to flow through the dripper, not cheap though.

I think he uses the ball valve to control pressure, when you start running that much waterline downhill the pressure really builds up and can blow your emitters right off the mainline sometimes..you can buy pressure regulators but the ball valve works best IMO, and is way cheaper. Plus you can shut the water off completely to modify or repair the rest of the line below the valve.
To regulate the frequency of waterings you use a programmable garden timer (runs all season on a couple of AA batteries). As long as you have a creek and a good intake setup, you can water every day without ever being there. Just visit every 10-14 days to check the intake incase something bungs it up.
Endur has a nice setup, hopefully he chimes in some more info..you say you loop the line back to itself, do mean you plug it back into intself (if that makes sense, I'm baked) with a tee instead of plugging the end off?

This is right on the money. No pumps, Just gravity doing all the work.

microgram, ya I know what your are talking about. They are kinda expensive, compared to the 1/2 GPH drip emitters I use. I have a few friends that use them in their backyard gardens, they do work well.
Your are right, I don't use any pumps/timers etc. Just gravity feed.

cool, just wondering if there is any advantage to looping it? I've always just plugged the ends but somehow it seems that by plugging it back into itself you could maintain constant pressure to each emitter. I've found that sometimes even though they are "pressure regulating" emitters (up to around 15-20psi anyways), the ones at the very very bottom of the hill get a bit more pressure than the ones at the top...any insight? Thanks!

Endur: Yeah the ceramic drippers are like 5$ a dripper as opposed to the 30-50 cents that normal drippers cost.

Maybe invest in 100$ water timer? I was trying to think of a way to DIY something, but why DIY something when you could buy something that'll work a lot better than the project? heh.

All last year, never came into contact with anyone. But there is a couple ranchers, that ride the road in Mid Fall. Had to postpone bringing home the goods, a weekend...haha.

now i remember this post hahaha a little while back ir ead tyhe whole thing and loved it and literaly wanted to do the same thing but on a smaller scale, this rely motivated me when i saw it and the plants look great and harvested some lovely fruits from the gods =) im hoping mine could mabi be half as good but we will see how this year goes hopefully all goes well, great work =)
