Hi All I just joined the forum last week and will 1st catch you up on the 1st 3 weeks.

This is my 1st grow and it's really exciting. I started 50 Skunk #1 from seeds and only 40 made it. Here's a breakdown on the veg setup.

4x4 ebb & flow tray with 40 gal res
1 New Wave 48 t5 8x54 watt bulbs
added a Bright wing with a 150 watt Eco Plus flourecent to be used with moms
12" and 6" bubler in the res
Using Advanced Nutrients

The babies were plated and put into veg on 1-06-08. Here's a pic.

1st week went well I was using Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow and Liquid Karma. My 1st res cleaning and nute change was done on 1-13-08. Heres a couple photos of the progress.

Here's where my issues started. The hydro rep talked me into using Advanced Nutrients. I did a lot of research and decided to make the change. I had problems because there online calculator which I was told to follow was incorrect. I way over nuted my plants I was getting nute burn and was just freaking out. The plants were growing well but the tip burn and edge burn on my plants got pretty bad during the week. Roy at advance had me flush the system for 2 watering cycles and then put them back on nutes.

Here's a pic showing my problem.

My problem never got really bad because I reacted before it became a major problem. With all the time and money spent I wanted perfection, but I guess I need to go through the newbie learning curve.

The 2nd res change was on 1-20-08 here's a couple pics.

I did a lot of reading on advanced and used info from the forums on what other people did adjusting there nutes. Here's a more detailed view of week 2's res change.

RO water PH 6.61 - PPM 17 Temp 17.9C
Res with nutrients PH 6.13 - PPM 747 Temp 17.9C PH adjusted 5.62
Room Temperture ranges from 75 - 84 F
40 gallon res

Advance Nutrients
Sensi A 6oz
Sensi B 6oz
Mothers Tea Grow 7oz
Mothers Humic 3oz
Mothers Fulvic 3oz
B-52 15oz
Barricade .8oz
Sensizym 17oz
Vodoo 5oz
Piranha 1TBL
Tarrantula 1TBL

Well I have 4 or 5 plants that were significantly affected by my nutrient problem, but the rest of them are moving along nicely.

Here's some more pics showing the problems.

Here's some photos from the 2nd weeks res change.

I had to do another flush early in the 3rd week because of nute problems again.

After the next flush which was done for a whole day's watering cycle. I switched my watering cycle from every 8hrs. for 15 min to every 6 hrs. for 15 minutes. The plants have just exploded this week. I would say they tripled in size this week.

Here's a couple photos.

The root have just exploded!!!!!!!!

I'm changing the res today and really need to finish the flowering room. Here's a drawing of the proposed layout.

Here's a link to my grow design page any input would be greatly appreciated.

Res change and measurements

Res change and measurements

I just did the week 3 res cleaning and new nutes. Here's a breakdown on what I added.

Res with nutrients PH 6.71 - PPM 1180 Temp 65.9 F PH adjusted 5.60
Room Temperture 77 F ranges from 75 - 84 F
40 gallon res

Advance Nutrients
Sensi A 8oz
Sensi B 8oz
Mothers Tea Grow 10oz
Mothers Humic 5oz
Mothers Fulvic 5oz
B-52 20oz
Barricade .8oz
Sensizym 45oz
Vodoo 7oz
Piranha 1TBL
Tarrantula 1TBL

The plants are really growing fast. There is a noticeable difference from this morning. There outgrowing the lights I'm currently using. The lights are currently 10" above the plants. Plant hights are average 8" and the tallest are almost 10".

When should I start taking a detailed look at my plants for sexing?

I'm assuming another 10 days to 2 weeks before I start to flower.

Here's some pics:

Roots gone crazy :muahaha:

Dense growth!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks DD

They really do look nice. I'm surprised I expected a lot more bumps in the road along the way. It's a lot more work than I thought it would be. I've read the equivelent of 20 books going through the threads trying to educate myself.

I jumped over to your journal and I had already gone through the whole thread. You've got a sweet setup and you obviously know what your doing.

I can't wait to see my skunks budding.

I'm all ears if you have any advice. :rasta:

Great job so far. I love the T5 light it really gets the job done. Looks like all your problems have diappeared for now hope that they continue to do well. Nice size grow.

Great looking grow esp. for a newb! mad props......

You are using a lot of supplements etc on those tiny plants.. maybe that was the cause of your problems? Since im not familiar with those brands etc maybe you can elaborate for us?

hey Kilbud. very nice setup.

it looks like you are spending a fortune on nutes tho. did your local shop suggest you change out your reservoir weekly (good for their nute re-sales)?

I just completed a grow with the same reservoir start to finish including veg time using floranova grow to start and floranova bloom for reservoir topoffs to finish the grow. I used 4oz of grow and 8oz of bloom the entire 73 days by adding a little bloom in the topoffs to keep my EC around 2.0. my system holds 26 gallons. I did this in dwc recirc system however I have a friend that uses the ebb&flo setup and he uses the same reservoir start to finish without problems. he uses the same nutes I do.

im guessing my total cost on nutes was about $7.50 for the entire grow.

im 4 days into drying my last harvest and it will weigh over a pound when finished. not bad off 4 plants. be careful of those silver tongue'd local shops. they will slip every dollar out of your wallet while your hypnotized with all the pretty toys they have displayed.... :smoke:

Hey Mr. Toke,

The seed was dropped by my local hydro shop. He said all my friends use AN and just follow the calculator. I did some research and decided to give it a try :bashhead: I'm going to stick with AN through this grow and lets see how my yield is. I'm embarrased to disclose how much I spent on nutes. I must say the plants are growing out of control. I will be cutting back from 24 hrs. to 18 hrs light to give myself time to complete the flower room. I don't want my plants to be too tall on my 1st grow. They're growing almost an inch a day now.

I'm going to start dealing with another hydro store in town. I think he's more knowledgeable than the other guy. He's giving me a straight 15% off product which is cool. The other shop was giving me a 10% discount but then I found several products they sold me were 10 - 20% over retail :asskick: The new shop recommends I think it's Flora 3 part by GH. I might give it a try next grow.

Just finished putting up my 10x8 wall closing off the flower room and running my electrical 30amp 220v and 20 120v. I'm waiting to get a lot of the supplies in to contiue the build out. I will be building Krypto's ebb & flow bucket system. I will pick up all the remaining supplies later next week to finish the room.

Here's a couple photos from todays work.

I'm assuming another 10 days to 2 weeks before I start to flower.

Unless you have an auto-flowering strain, you'll have to wait 2-3 weeks AFTER you switch to 12/12 to sex your plants.

I've used the GH 3 part nutes for years. Very happy with them. Espicially since discovering you only need 2 of them, Flora Micro and Flora Bloom. The green part, Flora Grow, does nothing but suck money out of your wallet. Years later, this becomes famous as the "Lucas Formula." Who knew?

VERY impressive first grow!

very nice, very clean setup you got goin on here :) And it looks like you had a combo of pH/nut burn problems. It looks like your pH still might be a little off.

Hey Herbatonist,

I agree with the PH/Nute burn. I've been having a problem with the PH shooting up. It's not as bad now but it still jumps up to the 6.3-6.5 range. It seems like it takes an awfull lot of PH down to get down to 5.6. I was told adding to much PH down is not good so I'm adjusting after it reaches 6.1.

Hey FreezerBoy,

The only problem with waiting for sexing till flowering is I want to pull 3 or 4 mother from this grow. I've read it's not good to go from 12/12 back to veg for mothers.

I've revised the grow room plan after seeing this video which was sunnyside posted to one of my threads.

http://www.hydrotv.com/showhd1.html

This video really answered all my questions about ventilation and circulation. Here's the revised layout.

Any feedback is appreciated :muahaha:

Can anyone explain to me how to post higher resolution photos?

Kilbud,

a day or 2 before switching to 12/12, you can take a couple cuttings from each plant for cloning. just keep track of which cuttings came from which plant.

Once they show sex in flower, kill the rooted clones that came from the males and pick a few strong clones that came from the females to use as moms for future grows.

Hey Jonny

I was planning on cloning just before the switch, but it would be nice to confirm at least a couple females before flower. After seeing what I've done my cousin wants me to set up and run a room for him. His room will be 16x10 and he's got vaulted ceilings so we can grow some tree's. Well probably set up 50 plants flowering at 2' and 10 flowering at 3.5 - 4'. That's a lot of clones with his and mine. We'll probably be running 8 1000 watters in his place.

Well were half way through the 3rd week of veg and it's mostly a problem free week with a lot of growth. The tallest plants are now 12+ inches and my 4x4 tray is packed with dense growth.

The only minor problem I noticed for the 1st time last night was the edges of some leaves, maybe 10% are turning up and in. Here's a picture of the worst one.

There's not many plants affected like this but if someone could explain what's causing it that would be great.

Some other info PH fluctuates between 5.6 and 6.2. res temp 64 F. room temp 69 - 75. PPM - 1075

Let's see if my pics post large.

whoa that is definitely a magnesium definiciency. Get some molasses or epsom salt in there right now that should fix it right up. ;)
