i hear you fiddy
defoliation can be a very touchy subject in some circles
i think there are so many variables to consider that there is no one way to grow the kine
also what might work with one strain will not necessarily be the best for another
and then add in that all of our grow rooms have a unique micro climate and you are really muddying the water

as far as hormones go, do some reading on auxins
i recall hearing about them in a biology class a long time ago and kind of took interest
im no expert but its a good place to start
definitely post up anything you find or even questions you might hvae
maybe we can figure this one out together

yeah, two months is a long time to veg
maybe you can veg for that long, take cuts and prune the plant down and then put it into flower
that way it will have an enormous root system already in place but wont be too big a plant to manage

@floridian
how everythign going on your end brother?
i used to be the king of the cheap dates
good mexican food, a couple fatties* and a walk on the beach and its on!
i know the all the best spots to watch the submarine races
*sometimes i would even roll a j or two

Good afternoon pop_rocks.
In my reading about defoliation the last couple days I've come across some good info. I learned that buds do photosynthesize and make their own energy. They are probably not as efficient as fan leaves but the energy doesn't have to transfer to them and that saves energy. Also the sugar leaves right up against the buds give them energy as well. It got me thinking about how the light effects the distribution of the hormones and how everything interacts. Some reading is still in order and I'm just starting to get an understanding of how the different jormones interact. My interest lies in keeping the balance of those hormones and maybe manipulation of them to get my plants to stay a little shorter.

A great informative thread I found here is called "plant hormones (FYI)" by I.M. Boggled. Lots of great info and some good contributions from others in this thread as well. https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=17596

Another good one is called "shaggy's guide to hormones used in cannabis" by shaggyballs. Lots more good stuff. https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=281272

Shaggy seems to focus more on how the addition of hormones affects the plants but has a lot of good info. I'm more interested in getting the most out of the hormones already in the plant to get it as happy as possible. Also finding natural ways to increase hormones in plants that help them get bigger and frosty buds.

I'm a long away from understanding how all these hormones interact but there are more bits and pieces of info in the above threads and others. These are complex interactions that aren't easily understood by someone without a lot of education on the subject. I have a lot more to read and learn. I'll keep looking and report back with anything interesting that I find.

I'm going to have to roll with the changes on the GB's. If I veg them that long and have huge roots I may need even bigger pots I'm thinking to avoid root bound. And if the root system is that much bigger will they stretch a lot more? Not sure. I'm also unsure how many GB's I'm going to end up with. 2/7 are looking not good and not growing much. If I end up with 5 how many lady's will I get? Not sure. If I only get 2 girls for instance I'd want to use bigger pots and more training so that they fill my space. And if I have to take the tent down how long will it be to diagnose and repair the well and then do I have to monitor it for a while to make sure it's fixed. It would be a shame to set everything back up only to have the problem return right away and have to take everything down again. Just going to have to play this one by ear and see how everything shakes out.

Hahah a couple fatty's and maybe even roll a joint lol. That's funny. Lots of farm fed fatty's around here.

Mutant fan leaf

Mutant fan leaf

Greetings friends.
I was inspecting LW#4 last night and found something quite odd. One of the smaller fan leaves is starting to grow a bud out of the center of it. This plant is weird. It's a runt and a mutant. It is less than half the hight of the others. It smells great and the main cola oh getting good bud stacking. She is really frosty as well.

Have any of you guys seen anything like this on any of your plants before? Pistils coming out of the center of a fan leaf? Is this unique or just something I haven't experienced before?
Here she is.

Hey Guys and Happy Holy Week
we're looking forward to our camping trip next week. I just watered heavy and plan to let them go a little dry, just before we leave I plan to soak them good and then fill the trays I'm thinking I can get 9 days without water. They are 4 foot in the 7th week of flower I would usually water twice in that period but not as heavy am I coming back to a wilt?
we go camping as often as we can. not so much in winter but I would jump on Big Pine Key anytime someone wants to go. I spent about a thousand dollars on tent bed Yeti and folding tables. When we pay up the camp ahead we vacation on $50 a day easily. Our spot on St John was $24 a day and we will be able to see the beach. I think its 20 min from appalachacola, across from Mexico beach. Have not been there before but it looks good on google. We love the area there once spent a winter in a beach house on St George. Oysters there are quite good.
Fiddy that leak go away?
sounds like not much of a leak. if it isnt getting worse its likely just surface water. I assume the pump is down the well and not up in a pump house over the well. if its a leak in the pipe the pump will run a lot more often. that cap that leaks It must not be glued you might try to knock it off and look in the chase put a big bucket down first in case its full.
I looked around and you're right some folk feel strongly about their defoliation. A lot of rude talk. I think the weed may not be enough meds for some of the characters I read.
Just no accounting of some folks children.

Good evening Rodehazrd.
Wow 9 days is a long time without watering. Mine go 3-4 days max when my temps are in the 70's and RH is around 50%. I've not gone and left my plants for more than a day before. It's something I have to start thinking about if I want to start going up north or camping ever again. Any chance you could get someone you trust to give them a drink while you are gone?

Sounds like your all set for a great trip. You have a great camping set up. I just negotiated some paid days off at work and want to plan a trip or two. The benefit of my job is I get to have a lot of fun at work but the down side is it doesn't pay a lot and I need to work a lot of overtime. I didn't have any paid days off until now so I feel like I can go do something and not worry about having to survive off Ramon noodles when I gat back and have half a paycheck. I need to look into camping more because it would make trips more affordable for me. When I went to Florida a couple years ago the beach house I stayed at was cool but over 400 bucks a night and I usually don't have that kind of cash. Growing up my family never went camping, my dad said he had a bad camping experience called the Vietnam war so he never wanted to camp again. I started going with friends in my teens and twenties and loved it, except when the weather got nasty. I also want a super compact set up so I can carry everything on my motorcycle for short trips, and a bigger set up so I can go with the wife and dog when we take the car.

The leak is still there. We got more rain on Monday so ground is still wet. Seems stable at a couple gallons a day. It's a pump down the well system and I don't notice it running anymore than normal. You have a point it's not much of a leak and at 40psi you'd think if it was the pipe it would be a lot worse. If the ground dries out and it stops I'll try to pull the cap off and reseal it. That would be great if I can fix it and don't have to have my grow interrupted.

Isn't it strange how hostile some of the defoliation threads are. Just as heated as some of the threads that turn political. The mods have their hands full to keep the peace.

Yep water has a way of getting whare it wants to regardless of our efforts. I took a closer look and realized there is a casing through the block in the wall and just inside of that is the casing with the wires and pipe come through. The water seems to be coming through the gap between the outer and inner casing suggesting it's ground water after all. Looks like I may not need a contractor after all:).

Hey Fiddy I've seen that occur with plants maybe a half dozen times{none of my own}and nobody ever had a really good explanation for it.I remember someone saying its a common trait with Chinese cannabis. Its not good or bad, just very funny looking

Good afternoon Floridian.

Yes funny looking for sure. This plant is a weird one. I'm glad I kept her around cuz she is super skunky and frosty too. I do remember coming across a thread whare someone was showing a fan leaf with a weird blade and someone commemted that the blade would likely form a bud when flowered but I never saw a follow up post that showed it. I'm going to post it in the bodhi thread and see what everyone has to say about it. I wonder how big the bud will get?
Thanks for your input...Fiddy.

way to go rhode!
hopefully you just saved our man a lot of grief and money!
i hope the probelm is just ground water
not a bad idea sealing things up if you can

ive seen that before too but have never had a plant of my own do that
the funny part was, the guy who i knew who had that only said it happened on some of the clones
i imagine its a survival trait, the plant producing flower at every junction
i dont know why it wouldent express itself on every plant if it was genetic
if nothing else your shake is going to be extra stoney and will make good bubble

that is awesome about getting the paid time off!
its great to get away from it every now and then and not ahve to tihnk about work
how much time off did they give you?
maybe you can stack it around one of the upcoming holidays (like memorial day or the 4rth) and get even more mileage out of your time off
/i guess that one of the things i take for granted about my work is all the benefits i have earned

a camping trip would be great!
esp if you could take rufus and the mrs
rigth on man!

Good afternoon pop_rocks.

I posted the leaf bud pic in the bodhi thread and didn't get much response. I was wondering if it was more common with this strain but it doesn't seem like it. I've had a few people tell me they have seen it before (on other strains) but it looks like a rare oddity. She is getting really frosty and has a great lemon diesel smell. I think she is going to be great smoking.

Yes I am looking forward to taking some time off soon. I told them I wanted 2 weeks and they gave me 14 days for some reason. I wasn't going to argue with them. Only down side is I said I wanted the time rather than a raise so no raise this year. Now I just have to learn how to deal with my plants when I'm gone. I think I will have to train my dad to water them. I love the summer holidays and you have a great idea to get time off around them. Thinking ahead to Memorial Day if my math is right I should have GB's in the stretch that weekend. I'll have to think about how to strategize and sync my grows with my long weekends.

You got anything exciting planned this weekend? I'm headed over to family's house for Easter egg hunt with the nieces and nephews Sunday. If the weather holds out I plan on riding the mountain bike a bit and some disc golf this weekend as well. I hope you week was good and your weekend is starting off well...Fiddy.

14days, score!
that is almost three weeks!
not a bad bump instead of a raise (i think it would work out to something like 5-6% if you look at it like money)
but this is time off we are talking about, brother!
at this point in life i would way rather have more time off than money
it does make it tough to maintain your garden but you could take shorter holiday and still keep up with the plants
ima big fan of three and four day weekends
way to go fiddy!

yeah a friend is having us over for easter sunday
we have actually been riding more consistently this last week and it feels great to get back out
i have a few miles before i get back into the shape i was before the long winter but we kept a great pace and hit some fun spots
the rains left a lot of exposed rocks and deep channels on some of the trails
lots of sugar sand too

hope you all are having a great weekend and enjoying the spring!

Good afternoon pop_rocks.
Yep I'm stoked. I, too would rather have the time off than a raise this year. It will make it much easer to get out of town here and there.
I'm with you on more long weekends. I can have a lot of fun on a 4 day weekend. It would allow me to get up north to the cabin a lot more.
I will try to take a week and go on a winter vacation to the Florida keys next year also.

Glad to hear you are getting some riding in. I know that good feeling when you get back out after a break. I'm in the out of shape club too but going to try to work on getting my legs back this weekend. I didn't get to ride today because I got stuck at work late ( it was super busy since it's like 80 degrees here today) but I'll be getting some rides in tomorrow and Monday. Sounds like the trails out by you are a bit gnarled up. I love challenging trails they motivate me to ride harder.

I hope your weekend is off to a good start and you have a good Easter...Fiddy.

yeah we dont mind the rough
i will often choose the worst line of the roughest part of the trail just to make it more challenging
i have a workout plan , upping the frequency of rides over the next few weeks until we are back to three or four rides a week
plus it stays light late enough so that we arent using the lights anymore
i kind of missed this last night riding season but yuo cant dwell on the past
all i can do is whip myself back into shape for the summer and keep going from there
are your dirt trails in any shape to ride?
80' is downright warm and i hope you enjoyed your day!

yeah you sure can have a lot of fun over a three/four day weekend
taking both friday and monday off rules! (if you had to choose, which day would you rather have off, friday or monday?)
does your wife have a flexable schedule at work?
hopefully the two of you can schedule a few days off together
one thing i like to do when i take a day off is pick mrs chicky up and take her out to lunch
i like getting out of the house and there are a lot of good places to eat around where she works
we try and take a few random days off together as well, but i take way more time off than she does
/i have more days off plus i just like to skip work for no reason

turns out she is going to a family reunion next month, plus has a wedding to attend (either the reunion or the wedding is in fla)
plus my birthday is in may so i usually take a few days off to celebrate

how was the disk golf today?
who do you play with?

my weekend is in full swing, brother and im enjoying every minute!

happening guys!

hope everyone had a great easter weekend
spent the day with family and friends eating ham and enjoying the beautiful day!

its finally starting to feel like spring here in so cal, with temps in the mid 70's and a nice sea breeze to keep things nice

just wantd to post up a pic of the girls so you could see how they are doing
it turns out i had taken another pic earlier in flower so im going to post up both here so we can see see how far the girls have some
this first pic was taken a little while back in early flower:

View image in gallery

and here is how she looked last week:

the plants closest to the viewer are the dog treats i was gifted recently by a friend here on ICMag
both are really showing nice resin and good plant structure
the plants in the background are of mrGibbs, grown in much smaller pots and pruned to a single stem

sorry for the shitty color balance, but i dont really take the plants out until they are done and the point and shoot i used ( or maybe i used my phone) isnt the best camera for this type of light

i will prob run just the two var of dog treats in the next cycle as well as some new beans i was recently gifted
/i have clones vegging as i type this and should have some flower ready girls within the next few weeks

i imagine im about four or five more weeks out (flipped on 03.19) but since this is the first time ive run these that is just a guess

hope you all had a great weekend and the new week is off to a great start

Good morning pop_rocks.
I've been away from the Internet for a couple days and it feels like a lot longer. The weather has been glorious here and I've been enjoying spending time outdoors and doing some much needed spring chores around the yard.

Sounds like you are doing a better job of getting your biking legs back than I am. Glad to hear that the trails are getting rideable again and you are taking advantage of that. We have not gone more than a day without rain (until last weekend) for what seems like a couple months. The ground is saturated everywhere so it will be a couple weeks at least but I'm hearing more rain this week so who knows hen the trails will be open here. I need to get some legs first anyway.

I think long weekends will be perfect for getting away but not staying away from my plants for too long. The wife has a lot of days off and she just needs to put in for them a few weeks in advance. We work such different schedules that we only see each other a couple nights a week. Some husbands might say it's a perfect situation:). She works second shift and I'm often sleeping by the time she gets home and she is never up by the time I go to work. We will defenatly get some days together to go up north and we want to visit her sister who just moved to Alabama soon. You can tell how much you love your chick pop_rocks with taking her out to lunch and spending lots of time with her. You guys are lucky to have each other.

It end d up being too wet to disc golf so I didn't get out at all this weekend. It was 80 on Saturday and in the 70's on Sunday I just hung out at my aunts and uncles house and relaxed with family. The kids did an Easter egg hunt and everyone had a good time.

Good to hear your Easter went well. I bet your weather and mine were the same on Sunday, sunny 70's and a little breeze. I love a good ham sandwich.

Your plants are looking great! I bet you are getting anxious to sample some of the new dog treats. They have come a long way since you posted the first pic of them. You flipped to 12/12 two weeks after I did and your buds look really nice.

Looks like it's back to work and a busy week for me. I'm way overdue on a update on the wookies and will try to get that done today. I hope your week is off to a good start as well...Fiddy.

Sounds like some good investigative work there. Hahah secrets out pop:).

Yes for a trip like that I'd take a week or more for sure. More if I drive down for sure. Not that we have family in costal Alabama I'll probably check that out first.

Sounds like you have a great trip planned. I hope you get the best weather and have a great time. From the description of your set up you are prepaired for whatever comes your way. Enjoy the time and don't worry about your plants too much.

Sounds like you have been busy with upgrading your grow set up. You are in a good spot to get away for a few days. Sounds like new genetics when you return. It's so exciting to start new strains.

I've not used an intake filter so hope someone who has will advise you.

I'd love to see some pics of the beach and water from your trip. Post away.
