Few newbie questions...

Hey all, just spent today's paycheck getting my new hobby under way after months of reading and dreaming...

I picked up a 400watt hps with hood, but the ballast is in the hood with the light. My concern is that i'm growing in a 16in x 16 in x 37 in grow tent, and that's in a 4'x5' interior closet... For now im using 100watt cfls, and i plan on turning this into my mothering chamber. My next pay check, im buying a 2ft x 3ft x 6ft grow tent, and thats where the hps will go. Will the ballast being in the scoop generate too much heat? Right now, I don't have any ventilation for either tent. The all-in-one was only $200 while a separate ballast and hood is going to run me sound $350...

I just started germ today, so I have awhile until I need to properly ventilate. I plan on running duct work through the grow tent with a carbon filter once the odor becomes noticeable... Until then, i'm going to buy a little fan and just have that running blowing air into the bottom of the tent and another fan at the top blowing air out. Think that'll be enough for either tent? Can I circulate just the tents or will I need to ventilate the room, too?

Aaaaand what type of medium would you recommend planting in? I have a friend who says scott's potting soil worked fine for him, but everyone else I know grows hydro. :/

The 400 will work ,but it will take an effort to keep temps down,Yes you will have to vent the closet some how
Check out the soil growers forum but I think foxfarm and happyfrog are the most used

You're asking questions that only you can answer. Find a similar grow tent grow in the "Grow Diary" forum and learn about it and copy it. People have been doing this for a long time...you don't have to reinvent it.

If the hood is not air-cooled that will get way too hot, specially if you have no venting.
