Fans - set me straight

K

KMK0420

I'm buying a Homebox L. standard 3' 3 1/2" x 3' 3 1/2" x 6' 7"

I'm ballparking starting ~15 plants and having ~1-5 solid females. anymore, is a bonus. it'll be under a 400 HPS.

I keep hearing about these vortex fans, elicient (sp), etc...but my dilemma..

I know the exhaust going through ducting will definately create noise, but that can be limited iwth a ducting muffler.

I need a fan, i'm guessing that can move ~200/250cfm for the homebox. I really can't afford a speed controller, so the fan will pretty much be on 24/7. On top of that i want either a CAN or PHAT carbon filter, both have good reviews.

Flat out, i've spent hours researching..so someone with experience or knowledge in this area:

Name the fan, name the filter (for my setup) (ie, Vortex Model XXX,CAN filter)

this is the biggest thing holdin my grow up! lol. aside from getting seeds. haha

It really comes down to personal preference. It seems that you have already done your homework so you are equipped with the knowledge to decide for yourself.

As for a sound muffler, check the DIY thread for a cost effective muffler.

Vortex= loud but great pulling power
Elicent= quieter

Can= Industry standard
Phat= Promising up and comer

I would get a can 6 inch high output and a can filter 33. Check out the YouTube video for can vs. Vortex and you will k ow why you should pay five bucks extra for a can fan

I am growing in a Homebox L with 2 x 400 watt lamps, and my cheap 4 inch HTG fan and filter combo do just fine in there. I am upgrading to a Soler and Palau 6 inch fan and filter combo, which will give me more CFM and will sound quieter. I haven't set that up yet, though.

Why not go with a Soler and Palau 6 inch fan and any ole 6 inch filter? They're supposed to be quieter than all the other fans of their size, and I haven't really heard any complaints about their ability to pull or push air. Do a search for "soler and palau" to learn more about them.

vortex. I got mine one hundred forty for 6" and one ninetyfour for 8". I did allot of research and they are best hands down. Just always go up a size so you can run at half speed to keep things quite....

+1 on the above 6" inch fan for 80$.

A great alternative is a lasko pivoting blower from lowes for 50$. Around 250 cfm on the high setting...I have mine set on low, with carbon filters hooked up on both ends of the blower (has two intakes one exhaust) and have a lot of negative pressure in a 4x5x5 room, on the low setting.

My carbon filters are custom made to flow about 70 cfm each (5.5 inch core height, 4 inch core width) and do an incredible job...although If I didnt have all the material around the house to do the filters minus the carbon I would of designed my filters to flow a little more, but for me, the above does incredibly well.

When using centrifugal fans, use insulated flex-duct (get it at the Building Supply store) to reduce noise. If you have at least four feet of duct on either side of the fan (even better, eight feet), the noise will be muffled.
Most of the noise from a centrifugal fan comes in the air stream. The noise is created by the blades whipping the air, and propagates in both directions away from the fan, inside the ducting. Even though the flex-duct adds some turbulence (and thus, noise) because the walls are not smooth, the soft material and insulation lower the noise substantially, making it much quieter than rigid ducting.

KMKO420!!! I owe you a large apology, BeeBee is absolutely correct! I was mistakenly echoing what few posts I had read on the matter. To be sure, I had implemented the methods I described (I have since edited my post) in my own grow and even though they worked to a degree, I am not overly concerned with sound damping. After reading BeeBee's post, my curiosity was peaked and I have done a bit of research at a few AVS/HT sites and the experts there confirmed to me that what BeeBee said is sound advice (no pun intended). Again, my apologies.

BeeBee, thank you for setting me straight! It was something of a revelation to me and I appreciate the correction!

I will be rearranging my grow shortly, but thought someone might like to visit this site...
