Basically all the "dry" counties (where bars aren't allowed) all have long standing traditions of moonshine that generally have the sheriff in their pocket. NASCAR is a straight by-product of bootlegging, as is the term "Mountain Dew".

I worked for this guy and his right hand man (general manager) was a retired county judge (in NC). At a meeting in his office one day he told me to open the bottom cupboard of this bureau. Inside were jars of homemade shine and schnapps. At first I was a little nervous, not knowing if he was testing me or what, but then he said his family has always made their own. And some of it wasn’t too bad. Just a part of the culture.
