People still bitching about Soma's gear eh? Hard to figure out what's going on there. I know that CF had some and had an awful time getting them to crack. I've seen the flaming in Soma's threads complaining about the same thing.
My personal belief is that people consider his beans to be expensive, then they sit around somewhere waiting to be bought.....when someone finally comes around to purchase...they get the ancient beans that are barely alive and the cycle of germination issues continues.
In my case, I bought them in Amsterdam hot off the presses. I picked up Lavender and SoGouda. No problems cracking whatsoever, but the SoGouda was released just days prior to my purchase so there was no question about them being viable. The Lavender was a lucky purchase also.
I think if you're comitted you can pop enough of Soma's stuff to find something extremely special. I think it's also understandable if people are gun-shy from being burned one too many times.

FWIW,
I have yet to order Soma Seeds.
Mostly,because of the bad germination reputation.
(Same with Sensi.)

No problems with DJ or MNS, tho.

They're expensive too.
Maybe their stock doesn't sit as long?



Lately, I've had great luck with Area 51 beans.

Access: I think it has more to do with the reputation he made for himself BECAUSE of his beans failure to pop.

You're only as good as your word. Problem is, Soma made verbal (typed) promissory notes to those who received his non-viable stock. Afterwards, he promised a lot of these people that replacement beans would be made available. The whole time he was just tooting his horn in a vain attempt to remain in good standing in our community.

Several can confirm, Soma made good for those who kissed his ass and talked about how good his wares were, regardless of their viability. Everyone else took a $100-200 hit in their pocket.

I feel it has much less to do with the viability of his beans, and loads more to do with the quality of his character. He made this apparent during the span his beans had issues by:

#1: Admitting he had jobbed out the production of his seed stock, meanwhile keeping virtually NO control of the product he put out.. Mixed labels, Fem beans sold as non fem (and vice versa), completely non-viable stock etc. Up until he admitted this, people had no problems paying pretty high prices for Standard polyhybrids (which is mostly what he and many others offer, hell you could get true breeding stock from guys like TomHill for half of what this guy's gear costs)

#2: He further deteriorated his reputation here after that by promising replacements for all these fuck ups, then proceeded to disappear or completely began ignoring people with VALID complaints.


There's my take on it. Other breeders and seed makers that have a pious attitude/mentality even get more respect that Soma. IMO because they back the product they are selling. Very similar to if you bought a car and they wouldn't resolve any warranty issues for you. Would you buy another vehicle from that manufacturer, or would you begin taking your business elsewhere?
