I wear something similar to these, but it's a larger solid rectangle instead of two circles that flips up. I had the wrap around sunglasses style shade 5's, but when you are working in the room it's inevitable that they will slip down your face or you'll get at an angle where the hps gets past them. I found the flip ups for under $20 at a local welding supply store. Get a pair, today. Nice thing about the rectangle ones is if you have to flip the front up to get a better view you can use that like a visor to block the direct light. And the solid surround blocks the direct light when you are using the shade, which reduces glare and eye strain.
Even with the shade 5s though your eyes will still feel it after you've been in the room for a while. What I've actually been trying to do is not even go in the room at all during lights on. I picked up one of those green LED head lamps, they have them at most hydro stores. Working during lights off is much nicer, the climate is better and you don't have to worry about burning yourself on the lamps, or your eyesight.

Shade 5 welding glasses are what I got when I was running vert with even a 150w the arc tubes in hid lights are so intense they will damage your eyes over time.
The only thing that sucks when using them its hard to see as goodd of details when looking at your plants. Such as yellowing leaves or odd spots or something like that cant see them as easily with the glasses on.
Better than going blind though or seeing spots for the rest of your life...
I think mine cost $12-13 well worth your eyesight to spend a couple bucks.

Yeah I have both a green LED headlamp and flashlight, cheap enough to get both. Nice to add redundancy in case you need to go in w/lights on with glasses and/or your suggestion. Thanks for the advice real.
I just got the method seven resistance and they are worth it. I am going to get the resistance+ model, they are coated with a reflective film "silver" and are more geared to my vert bulb environment.
I also have multiple pairs of shade 5 welding goggles

PS: high life about your sig, the feds can say what they want, they aren't pursuant to the Constitution Article 10 which trumps them and on reading that should then ok states voting it in. Ive been trying to catch a nap before my lights come one and when I wake up and go right into my grow room Im nearly blinded. Ive decided to reduce the amount of time I spend in there even more(if thats possible)
I'm like Supermanlives, I just use a hand to shield my eyes if I'm just taking a quick peek. When I work in the room I shut off the hps and turn on an incandescent trouble light. I have several pair of #5 sunglasses but they're too dark for any useful purpose imo.

If you get those, I'd love to hear your opinion on how dark they are, especially if you are familiar with the green #5 welding goggles. I need over the glasses as well, and I have the green welding pair but I don't like them.

I never gave much thought to the damage that high intensity lighting would do to your eyes over time, But since reading this thread I found a pair of goggles designed for welding that completely shield the eyes, and the lenses pop out and you can put in different levels of tint, They may not be the best, but Its better than nothing. Great thread bringing awareness to something that alot of us overlook!

They work great and these lenses are available on the same site with more stylish frames. My grow room is a style free area, so I went with the one that most covers the eyes. Adjustable. Good price. I recommend getting the "neck cord" aka lanyard.
These are code 5, but they are available in code 3 which is probably good. The 5's are a bit dark.

Sorry took a while to answer, but I got these and love 'em! They fit over my big head and glasses, actually I got 2. Have no real problem looking at buds right near the 600 watt bulbs too (I use both MH & HPS). On sale for $10.93 @ amazon.

I'm reasonably careful about my light exposure. I never look at a bulb, and if I will be in my room for more than a couple minutes, I wear shade 3 gas welding goggles. Shade 5 is too dark for me, and I wind up taking them off, which defeats the purpose.
One thing I would ad, is to definitely go with the goggle style Stonefree pictured above.
A growroom is not the same as sunlight, unless you were standing outside in a bone white concrete racquetball court, at noon.
With the white or mylar walls, reflected light is the big problem in my opinion. Wearing sunglasses lets your eyes dilate to some degree, and then the reflected light comes in the sides, possibly doing harm. I hate to say it, but we might be better off squinting, than wearing regular sunglasses.
I see no need to spend a penny more than about $10 at your local welding store for a set of wraparound goggles.
Protect yourself, by all means, but, like so many other things in the growing world, a fool and his money are easily parted!

Method Seven are the shiz...not only do they protect your eyes, you can really see the plants. It's much easier to spot bugs or deficiencies. It looks like your ladies are under MH all the time.
