Question: Though the coconut oil is soooo smoothe and vanishes into the skin so nicely, is there any residual stickiness on the skin due to the canna-oils? The Mrs. can't stand sticky residue on her hands, so that might be a deal breaker. Peace.

No, there is no residual stickiness.

It is possible to make a good quality cooking oil by decarbing the flowers first then do a heated extraction in oil?

My answer is yes. I do it all the time. We decarb in our oven. I heat up the plant material at 275 untill it is bone dry. A small amount takes only 5 minutes and larger amounts take longer. We have went as much as twenty minutes on 4-5 ounce batches. The key for me is bone dry so it grinds into a powder. I tell by crumbling it in my fingers, the drier it is the easier it crumbles. Not scientific but for our purposes it works.

My latest batches have used coconut oil exclusively. My routine is to decarb first, then grind the plant material in a small coffee grinder. Then I weigh the plant material and note the ratio of plant material in grams to the fluid ounces of oil. Most of my extractions use 4-5 gr per fluid oz of oil for canna cap, and 2-3 gr per fl oz for medible oils. Anymore than 5 gr per fluid oz is like gravy in thickness, for more potency for say trim, you could do two extractions with the same oil.

To have a rough idea of potency I use ten percent of the plant material weight divided by the cap numbers. I use ten percent because I have read that is about the best you could expect from an extraction. So 40 gr become 4. Then if got 57 caps I divide 4 by 57. That would be .070 gm, so I would label that batch 70 mg. most of my extractions are around 20 mg, but I have had both more and less. I just feel this gives me a rough idea of potency.

I also add a small amount of lecithin powder, lecithin is an emulsifier. Meaning it allows mixing of dis simular liquids. IOW it makes for a consistent mix. AND it allows our gut (intestines) to take up the oil better too. The oil must pass through intestinal walls. Lecithin is said to help do this. Lecithin really shines in hash oil/glycerin mixes, but even in coconut oil I believe it helps, if only in our gut.

For the actual extraction we use a small crock pot from a garage sale. We put the ground plant material in a glass jar and mix it with the oil and lecithin. The jar goes in the crock pot, then we fill the crock pot with water. I set the crock pot on high until it warms up then put it on the lowest setting (keep warm)my guess is that equals roughly 190-210 degrees. We start the extraction in the late afternoon, and let it work untill the next morning.

I screen off the plant material with a small steel colander. Then we rinse the dregs with hot water from the crock pot. Then the dirty water goes in the freezer. In an hour or so the coconut oil coagulates on the water surface. We reclaim the oil with a slotted spoon, pat dry and add to our base oil.

Then we fill the size 00 gel caps keeping the oil stirred as we fill caps. There will be a small amount of plant material in the oil and caps, but for us is of little concern. As we fill caps we place them on a frozen bag of something from the freezer (peas or corn works well) this allows the oil to solidify in the caps. Then the bottles are labeled for both variety and potency and stored in our fridge or freezer.

We find our caps are roughly equal to about 1/3 of a fat joint. But they do last much longer than smoked. Like other medibles there is a wait time until lift off and there may be issues with tolerance if you take the same ones all the time, just like smoking would be. Over all though I think this way is more economical and healthier.

On a side note we have been experimenting with gel caps filled with lemon grass taken with canna caps. Lemongrass is one of those things that is said to enhance the cannabinoids effects. So far our testing has been inconclusive. One to one has not shown anything so far, but I will continue looking.

I also have added anti inflammatory herbs, but that too has proven inconclusive so far......hopes this helps someone.....scrappy

I just whipped up a batch of Coconut Oil extract and am quite pleased with the results.

I used my crock pot and put in one container of Coconut Oil 454g 2C and 2 tbsp of water and set it on high until the oil started to simmer. I added 1 oz of cured bud - Legends Ultimate Indica and simmered for 1 hour on low with the lid off.

I'm using the water to moderate the temperature of the oil to 100C instead of using a double boiler. A remember seeing a decarb chart and 1 hr at 100C is the correct time.

I took a small fine strainer and removed the plant material from the oil by pressing it with with the back of a spoon. I got nearly 1 C of oily plant material that resembles brown hash.

On this batch, I wanted to recover and use the plant material. I found 1 tsp is a nice dose and it mixes nicely with organic almond butter or peanut butter.

The finished product is a nice light green colour. I can make medical strength brownies by substituting 1/4 cup of canna oil for cooking oil in the recipe. I found that cookies turn out really well by using 1 tbsp of canna oil with 2 tbsp of butter.

everyone be aware of the carrier used in your flavoring. Found out i was using one in a soybean oil base (LCT). Switched to Polyethylene glycol based and noticed a definite change in hit. Stay away from soybean oil.
