I just had a new Trane 4 ton installed. my 16 year old ac gave up the ghost lol.. The new one is an ass kicker. I get frozen in here now. so they told me 1600sf is the right size for a 4 ton unit. I paid 3300$ installed. One of my better investments.

I do have a portable AC in my flower room but have not used it since last summer. Now with the new working house AC i don't think I will... I only grow a few plants in summer to dam hot. If I do decide to grow in the summer I will get a mini split just for that room 10x12.

They do have mini splits that have high BTU like central AC have. I saw one that had 42,000btu. You will have to look for the right one there are many
Good luck

that's true the mini splits can coast more then a AC unit. Hay Joe what's the main diff between an AC unit and a heat Pump. I had one guy tell me a heat pump is just an ac that runs off Electricity??? I told him he was an idiot. He was from Home Depot. I thought a heat pump uses water to cool the house??

How there planing to set it up is put the air handler in this just sucks the air in and moves it over the coils and cools the air and thru the plenum and gets split for ways.... i just dont know where to put the damn unit in the conner or in the middle of the room... i kind of want to put it out side my flower room but i dont think i have enough space is i might put it inside the room

Mine is similar. I got e new ac unit for outside and the coil that goes above the heater. The V coil that's what I cal it lol. air gets sucked in from the house through a 20 x 25 hole in wall that has the coil in it. it sucks through this then flows through the cold coils cooling the air then blowing it back through the plenum at the bottom.

lol your are right he is an idiot. When your a/s is running the outdoor unit will be blowing hot air and the inside unit will blow cold air. A heat pump is an air conditioner with a reversing valve on the freon lines i n the outdoor unit. When your t-stat calls for heat it reverses the flow of freon so now the outdoor unit blows cold air and the indor unit blows warm air. That is how a heat pump works. It's just an a/c that can work in reverse.

if you are running 8 lights in a 16x16 you don't have space in the room for your air handler. Place it outside the room. you will need to set it on a return air box and run the supply into the room. Also you will spend another grand hooking up the Goodman unit. You need freon lines, drain line, t-stat, ducting, a 220 volt 20 amp circuit for the indoor unit and a 220v 30 amp circuit for the outdoor unit. And I really hope your installers know what they are doing. If anyone could install and work on a/c units there would be no hvac job for me :D There is a reason hvac tech's make good money.

I GRABED THE T-STAT.... WHATS THE MOST IMPORTANT STUFF TO GRAB FIRST TO KEEP THE PROJECT GOING??

GROCERY LIST
freon lines $175, drain line PVC?,
ducting, 220 volt 20 amp circuit for the indoor unit
220v 30 amp circuit for the outdoor unit.

how are you going to deal with the intense positive pressure your a/c unit will be pumping into the room? i've always wondered how people using central a/c style units do this

Im no A/c GUY but the air handler sucks the air in and returns the air cold until u reach the temp you want and turns off... it does the same thing over and over to keep the room cold

there shouldn't be neg. air pressure just reusing the air thats already in there

hey DET. so you're in a basement.. where were you planning on putting the air handler? what about ducting for the return and supply lines?

i have my air handler and all ducting in the attic above the grow. the best part of central AC is you can place vents wherever you like, but if ya don't have room for ducting then it's the same as a minisplit but takes up more room.

if that's the case, then i think a minisplit will be best for you. just make sure there is lots of air circulation in the room and the minisplit is installed as high as possible to reduce temperature differential across the room.

i think i saw you said you have 8' ceilings? that's good.

your HVAC guy will know all this, but you need a return vent (intake for warm room air to AC airhandler) and supply vent(s) (blows your cool air from AC airhandler to grow room.)

you could put your supply going all the way around the room on the ceiling in the corners and then put vents wherever you want. and then put the return in the middle of the room.

as for the air handler, i'd try to keep it outside of the room. maybe in the corner of your work space right next to the room.

so a professional HVAC guy is installing it, and he knows what it's gonna be used for?

I don't see the need for a uv light. I have the same question as whatthe215 has. If your guy is not a pro you need to cancel your order and scrap that idea. And if he can't answer these questions you have he is NOT QUALIFIED TO DO THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!! 410a freon is no play toy. It is a high pressure refrigerant and will cause instant frost bite in liquid form. Very dangerous stuff freon is.
As for supply and return it all has to be properly sized for the size system you have. I would put the supply ducts at the opposite side of the room from the return any other configuration and the system will not work properly.

Lots of good info here.

Good luck on your new project DETS..

I'm waiting on a new 2 ton mini split to get delivered any day now.

My first diy plug and play was a used unit I bought that lasted about 2 years.

Thinking back now I wish I'd have bought a new unit and had a tech install. Save me lots of troubles and $
