Excellent Vietnamese Dalat Article (Dr. Dalat)

Great thread! I've been to 'nam 3 times in the last 2 years and brought back some beans on my last trip. Germinated a couple last week and I'm really looking forward to this grow. 12-16 weeks tho, hope I can endure the wait.

First of all:
I got some of those seeds, but only a few, and at least two of them were chrushed during shipping.
I received them back during the good gone OG daze.
They were a gift from Marksurfs (thank you soo much brother!)
Please DO NOT SEND ME ANY PMs BEGGING FOR THOSE SEEDS!
You could offer me 100 Dollars for one single seed, - still NO CHANCE!
As soon as I have enough time, place and patience, I will sprout them, grow them, clone them and pollinate to themselves and other strains.
And then I will of course share those genetics with fellow growers/breeders!
The story behind those seeds:
A guy who called himself "DeWeeDalat"(if I remember the nickname correctly..) served in Vietnam back in the 70s.
Then, guess it was around 2002 or something, he decided to travel back there, as many Vietnam veterans do, to reflect and to fulfill the desire to go to a place that left so many mental scars...
As he came to Dalat, he stumbled across a farm that was(and most likely still is) traditionally run by a French family.
He saw BIG Sativa trees with enourmous Colas, and brought some seeds from this weed back home.
I remember him asking Mr. Rosenthal for some growing advice on those genetics in the "Ask Ed" column long before the first reports appeared on OG.
Marksurfs had a great thread running about the Dalat, with amazing pictures and a very honest and detailed smoke report.
As far as I remember he wrote about two phenotypes.
1, The so called "Umbrella Pheno"
2, The "Baseball BAT" pheno: Buds as big as a abseball bat
He described the smoke as not very lung friendly, because of the big time expension, and the high as a bit short lived, but extremely potent and cerebral without any ceiling.
He mentioned you could take a hit, get into soaring mode, and as soon as the effects began to wear off, take another hit, and get right up there again, higher and higher and higher.
He also made some great looking hash out of the trim/popcorns(It´s a shame that all those pics got lost as OG crashed down..)
Marksurfs also made a cross with Cinderella 99 and claimed that the offspring would still produce those classical Sativa shaped buds, but with a better potency, and a high that lasted for many hours.
That´s it so far.
Feel free to ask any questions about the Dalat(maybe some more memories may come to my mind), and I will try to answer them in this thread, but as I allready made clear at the beginning of this post.
I will not answer any PMs like "Could you just send me one single seed?"

very cool please let me be first on your list of people to send some seeds to once you grow it out lol. ive been dying to get this strain. i heard the umbrella pheno was a bit better than the baseball bat but that the yeild was alot less. when do u plan to grow them out? i would love to read that grow diary and smoke report.

I will share the beans,- don´t worry.
But you´ll have to wait a bit...
It could take one or two years, until I decide to dedicate my time and patience to those genetics.
For all the people out there who are into breeding:
I would be happy for any ideas concearning a good crossing partner.
My guess is that a pure, stable strain(landrace, heirloom, inbred, whatever you may call it..) would be best.
Maybe a pure Indica to bring down the flowering time, but maintain the qualities of the Dalat, maybe a shorter flowering Sativa(what about Senegalese? - Dubi,- that´s your topic...)
I would like to produce an F1 with a "heterosis effect", and that´s not easy at all.
Then I would need enough space to grow this generation out(100 plants minimum) and select the most promising phenos...
Breeding is fun, but it takes time...

spicecowboy's seed is quite important for breeding true F-1 hybrids with other verified true land-race strains.....he mentioned a few not-so-desirable qualities which could be bred out, and i can't wait to see what interesting combinations arise from crossing this plant.......
also i know i have that Dalat issue of HT, i just gotta sift through 100 mags or so to find it.....

I have some Dalat running but unfortunately, very few sprouted. If I have a male and a female, then I'll ask DiWeeDalat myself, to know what's really behind this strange rule of "no share". It doesn't match with the kind of posts i used to read from him.

I grew out dalat my seeds from the man himself..also have a peak19/origanal haze/dalat he gave me havent grown them yet but i did do the dalat and i wasnt impressed at all..i let these plants go 20 weeks indoor. it was some stringy dull smoke

Hey guys,
That 3 lbs, 3 ozs was Marksurfs, I believe two plants, and under a kilowatt..... he tortured those girls big time.
I thought I was gonna die and HAD TO HAVE SOME and well, I just gave them all away, believe me, if you do not have the right circumstances, it's unreal. Chaman, Dubi in an orange grove, let's see Paz, Redrider, even pato, some of these guys will succeed with this plant. The rest of you can do better for yourselves in fact.

She is very sensitive, so if you cannot pretend you are equitorial high altitude, don't bother.
