Evil Monkey Mini Grow- (LED, PC)

So first shoutouts:

To Pinstripe- for showing me that LED PC grows can yield decent amounts

To Blynx- for general badassery in growing, and for showing me that white LEDs can get 1 gram per Watt. (I also have a few off the shelf LEDs bulbs that I intend on using at some point for another mini project)

To Dion- for the general concept of the "el Cheapo." Seriously CAN WE MAKE THAT THREAD A STICKY? Because it's full of awesome.

To Killkingkong- I kinda ripped off your idea for magnets to attach the lights.

Lastly Mr. Sparkle. For inspiring me to post my own setup.

ON TO THE GROW:

This is my second grow, the one I had before was under lit, over heated and produced a male... So this will be the first one that produces anything.

Any potential problems/areas for advice, I have put in red.

Aims:
Short term simply to build a box that is capable of growing weed, quietly discretely and without smell. I'm trying to get something that can go just one cycle without it getting too hot in there or stinking up the place I live in.

I believe the lights can get me 1Oz+ in future grows, from what I see here. That's my long term goal with LST/Scrog and hempy bucket technology.

Setup:
Case:
An old PC Case that's approx 0.85sqft (17x7") by about 2' tall. So far I've just sealed all the massive holes with duct tape, I'd like to, at some point, use the back of an old power supply to cover the power supply hole and maybe use some MDF to cover the other assorted holes.

I've covered one wall with some diamond foil I had lying around, three other walls are covered with aluminum tape. I still have to do the back wall, I will sometime before flower.

At the moment I'm struggling with lightproofing. My intakes are some speaker holes at the front of the case that I'm going to make a scrub ninja cover for.

Lights:
This is the juicy bit. I made a modified el Cheapo from Dion's post (seriously... sticky)... Instead of having two strings of 12 on two drivers I got a 2A constant driver and made four units of COBs.

Each unit is one heat sink with 6 CoBs wired in series. The units are then wired in paralel. If my calculations are correct that's 500mA a piece and 18-24V to drive. It's working, in any case.

They're attached to the roof of the cab with L-brackets, which have first been attached to the heat sinks with superglue. The brackets are then attached to the roof with strong magnets. The glue holds for the most part but has come loose twice on two isolated brackets, meaning I've had to re-glue. I'm thinking that soldering the brackets on might be a better idea. But the glue is rated to at least 120celsius. Thoughts?

Ventilation:
80mm PC fan. I don't have the stats on it because it's about 10 years old and I dug it out, but it seems quite powerful. I have another 80mm PC fan that's not very powerful at all providing air circulation. The two are wired in paralel from a 12V power supply. I used screws that were slightly too long as I want to make a cardboard carbon filter that slots over the fan at a later point.

The Plants
Tub 1:
Nirvana's Aurora indica. Feminized. I started to LST Her but I'm finding that it's so bushy that I can't really LST without string rubbing on a growth point (the internode distance is THAT short, I can't find a bit of stem without a node!). As a result I've stopped trying and just topped her. She'll maybe get a little LST of the growth that results, maybe just more topping. I'm growing in Hempy buckets as it's simple and easy.

Tub 2:
Some nirvana mystery seeds that I sprouted, intending for a mini SOG. I germed five initially and put them into soil. The soil seems to have been pretty fucking toxic to them, however, and they didn't look so healthy (in fact two died). SO I took them out, washed their roots and stuck them in a shared hempy. The little one I just transplanted yesterday, the other two about a week ago. They've perked up a LOT since I did this. I'm not sure how they'll do in the same tub, but I don't mind this round.

So that's it. That's my setup. Waiting for your questions/comments/advice.

Mr. Sparkle

The one plant will probably remain bushy till stretch, then you will have to control her, i typically only wait till maybe three inter-nodes before i start to flower but then again i flower smaller plants.

As for the glue just use two part epoxy, but make sure you rough up "sandpaper" and clean the area your gluing, as it gives more tooth for the glue to stick too, prep work is crucial, or just drill holes and bolt it up.

For the holes you need to block you can use anything but i recommend thin metal sheeting, such as galvanized Panning sheets which can be had at home De-pot for like $7 for a 16"x35" Sheet, cut with tin snips and attached with rivets while sealing the edge with glue, and the light proofing just takes a bit of consistent work, but that's where your aluminum tape comes in handy.

Other than that the diamond foil is good, but you would be better off with a good flat white paint than the aluminum tape, as its quite a bit more reflective.

But looking like a nice start

Kong- Well they do say that imitation is the best form of flattery. :p

Sparkle- Thanks for the advice, man.

Re: the 12/12 switch. I think we're close, ish. I have 2 ft of altitude and she's only just about 6 inches tall yet. I've just topped her so I was thinking maybe let some shoots grow out, top them, let it get over the stress and then switch. Though I may lose patience with that plan :D

Re: the heat sinks. I did drill one hole in one and damn near destroyed the drill bit. Think I need some metal drill bits and some appropriately sized bolts. I may do that particular modification some time soon...

Re: the rest... I wasn't really sure about the aluminum tape (seems like sticky aluminum foil, which I know is a no no) but people seem to have used it to (sorta) good effect in PC boxes, which is why I used it. Ditto sealing the bigger holes with duct tape. I really really didn't want to do that but figured I should just get on and build SOMETHING otherwise it would be all plan and no project (which is something I'm prone to).

I'm kicking myself as I've just covered the back narrow wall in alu tape today.

I think I'm going to put a bit more diamond foil on the two "broad" walls and leave the ends with alu tape... for now... I think flat white/diamond foil for the narrow ends will definitely have to happen next round, though. Ditto riveting on some metal. To be honest, though, I have zero metal working ability and would have no idea about how to actually rivet some on... time to do some reading!

Decided to make the switch today on my little pilot grow. Here's what I got so far at the end of my veg:

The third little plant in my pot-of-three mystery seeds wasn't looking like it was going to make it. SO out it came... RIP little plant.

Of the two that are left one is getting, no surprise, bigger than the other. Let's hope it's a she...

On the other side is the Feminized Aurora Indica, which I stopped LST-ing, partly because she doesn't look like she needs it at the moment (bushy as fuck), partly because I'm having a hard time finding stem to actually tie (she's all nodes!) and partly because I just want to see what she does (I'm interested). To me at least, she's looking pretty damn sexy.

I'll make more of a post next time I modify the box- my next additions are going to have to be light trap (it's in a closet at the moment so no biggie) and a carbon filter... I still need to fix the lights properly too! :-s

What I did in my PC was use corrugated plastic covered on reflectix. It is easy to work with, light weight, and water proof. As far as light leaks, lots of aluminum tape and swearing (optional) gets the job done for me.

Good luck, I'll be lurking in the corner should you need me. :lurk:

Quick update (so sorry for the sideways pictures, will edit next time but kind of in a hurry today).

Right way up, landscape of the three of them.

The AA, before and after supercroping the top:

The experimental mixed pot. I think I need to train them to not be touching:

On friday I'm adding a carbon filter, some more lightproofing and a circulation fan for inside as I've noticed some of the leaves are wet on the AA where they're touching- I'm thinking of some pruning between now and then. Thoughts?

if u used the heatsinks from fastetch they each have 2x 3m holes on each edge

take simple aluminium angle and drill through it to aline with those hole

use sheet metal screws and it will go into the alu like wood

do the same for the L brackets and u should be fine

good luck with the grow

edit oops i was thinking of the other heatsinks
but u can still try to do this with a drill and some alu

End of Week two

End of Week two

Day 15 flower today. One of the two sharing a tub had to go as it turned out to be a male. Chopped form the stalk- obviously I can't separate out the roots- I'm hoping that's not a problem.

The other in there has turned out to be a super-stretchy sativa, which needed a little training to keep it a sensible height and make sure that all the little forming bud sites got enough light- it's not going to be a big yeilder, I think, but I'm curious anyway. On she goes.

My star plant, the AA is a girl as advertised by the good folks at Nirvana seeds. I've pulled a few fan leaves to get a little light. I think we're looking at two main colas forming and a few little buds here and there.

I've been really busy/lazy recently so not made any modifications to the cab like I wanted to. It seems to be holding together well enough, though, and light proofing still isnt an issue as it's happy in the closet (I will make the mods, though, I promise!!!)

I picked some activated carbon from the pet store and I'm going to build a filter before the smell starts. So far there's a very faint grassy aroma, but it's not obvious unless you put your head right up to the buds.

Between about 75-85F at most.

Yeah the Aurora's looking pretty good to me also- Hempy buckets rock! So does not fucking around with your plants too much and keeping shit simple. Gotta say, though, I got 5 feminized seeds over two years ago. One got germed but didn't make it due to a problem with an auto watering system I tried to set up back then (I went away for about three weeks- would have worked but the timer fucked up). It was strong as hell until then. I still have three of them left. It's a really tough strain. If I like the smoke I'm going to single plant scrog next round.

I'm rooting for the mystery sativa too, though- she's been fucked with a lot and an I want her to do well too. No more mystery seeds, though...

Navigator

Glad to hear the 80mm fans are working for you and I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see some Aurora scrogged in your setup.

Week six starts tomorrow :)

Week six starts tomorrow :)

Sorry it's been a while! I've been kinda busy lately!

Odor wise I've got some activated carbon but haven't needed to install it yet- when you open the closet it smells like a greenhouse, but not like pot at all... Not unless you rub the buds (which I don't do deliberately).

The AA is doing great under the LEDs, I have no idea how much I'll get out of it but if I got over 10g I would be stoked. I certainly think I'll have enough to have my rare smokes until I can tinker with the cab a little more and run that scrog.

The Mystery Sativa is long, stretchy and looks a little miserable. She's taking forever to flower and I don't think she'll yeild very much. I'm looking forward to finding out, though!

sorry: I keep posting and forgetting the PICS!

Mystery sativa with small buds a little miserable but doing generally ok:

Aurora indica looking sexy as fuck (imo, but it's all her and not me):

Close up of the AI bud...

No crystals on the MS yet so bud shots aren't as impressive. Will keep you posted on that front...

Thanks, Navigator!

Soooo, I opened up my box today and got a little excited as my Aurora buds are really starting to look bud-porn-able

So my first question here is:
- They've almost been going for six weeks now (will be on monday) and though I know they'll be nowhere near the chop at the moment I don't want to miss the moment. I've got a friend bringing me a loupe soon (I can't find one anywhere in my town and ebay will be no quicker where I live) but they don't visit for a while so it may be some guesswork as to the chop. Nirvana says 7-9 weeks for the chop so if they haven't visited me by then would people go by pistils or just chop about 8 weeks or so?

(... because I can only do so many pics per post and the damn thing keeps logging me out in long posts I'm afraid I have to do a second immediately after with my next question... sorry...)

This is the box ATM:
