I wouldn't cross a border with this stuff for this reason, of course. My next visit to a store, though, will probably be in a larger city with lots of public transportation.

I order over the phone. That way they can't get my license plate! I rarely use the same people for lights, nutes, soil, etc. Get the picture?

Dude, the best place to buy equipment is at the police auctions where you can get the stuff they confiscated for real cheap. There's usually a limit, so you gotta bring all your tokin' friends also. Those auctions are great when you're baked, man.

What I would dearly love to know is where beginning growers in the U.S. (like me) can order seeds. All the ads say they don't send seeds to the U.S., or that MJ seeds are illegal in the U.S., but they ship world wide. Could anybody clue me in here? Once I can save up some cash and have a source, I'll send my money in!

craigslist is a pretty terrible idea, unless you're not concerned at all with cops knowing you grow(100 percent 215 legit). That's perhaps the easiest way for a cop to get your info in the book.
The best strategy that I'm aware of would be to park your car in a very crowded lot, then take a cab from the lot to the hydro store and back.
Don't do a rental car, they can find out who rented it literally in 2-3 minutes, no warrant required.
A lot of people here use a "safe address" and get their shit mailed. I think it's kind of a dick move to put friends in the spotlight for police so I can get off the hook for my hobby, but to each his own.

Yes, Chucky is a nut job, but respect paranoia. It keeps you alive and free.
Here are some suggestions:
1) Get crafty. Build as much of your equipment as you can yourself. Use stuff that has alternate uses and can be procured from Walmart, hardware stores, pet stores, etc. Like modified totes instead of Waterfarms, modified HPS security lights instead of grow lights. Keeps you out of grow shops, off the radar, and it will usually save you money. The plants don’t care if you have brand name equipment. This forum and others like it have plenty of great information on how to build superior equipment from scratch so that you should never need to buy grow equipment from a grow shop.
2) Look into organic nutes from regular nurseries instead of buying hydro nutes from grow shops. A good organic tea will work as well as anything you can find in a grow shop. Teas from worm castings, bat poop, seaweed, etc. Shoot. For over 5 years I grew beautiful plants indoors using tea made exclusively from Russian Comfrey that I grew outside in my garden. And there’s always your own urine. If you don’t know about it, look into it. Some people have trouble with the concept, but for the life of me I can’t see why your own pee is more objectionable than bat poop, worm poop, or cow poop.
3) If you have to go to a grow shop, park you car at a mall, then take public transit to the hydro shop. After getting what you need, take public transit back to the mall, and then walk through the mall to your car. In one door, out another.

do they need a warrant to run your plate in Canada?i don't know why i suggested a rental? i guess if you have a proper running car that could fit a large order in..

No warrant is required to run your plates. They just speak the # into the mike, and base comes right back with the details (DL status/person registered to, make, model, colour etc). Most times, if a cop is behind you, he has already done this. They run many plates/day...
They will also often run the RO (registered owner) over the radio at the same time - a lot of times without a traffic stop ever occurring.
