smart meters

smart meters

i dont know about your power company but the one that work for doesnt have anything that they can use to montior what you are using at any time.we can check your usage but that has to be done in person.they do have meters that we can drive by and get a meter reading for. as far as using the cable to transmit data, they are still in the testing stage.we get to much interferance from outside sources( rain wind ect.) the company hopes to get your electric lines setup one day to use for high speed internet and normal electric use

The 1k turning on for 12 hours a day won't be noticed, unless someone is standing outside your house with a clamp meter on your feed. Your power meter only shows cumulative usage, and if they watch the wheel spin, current draw. They can't isolate individual meters for patterns of usage, other than monthly fluctuations. So if you normally use 100 dollars a month, then suddenly your bill jumps to 400 dollars, that will get you maybe noticed. Similar to our water company will call if your bill is suddenly outside your normal usage, they just want to make sure you don't have a leak somewhere.

When I flip on my 1k ballast soon, I will discontinue using several electric heaters, shouldn't be much of a change, since they're 1500W heaters. Keep the graph smooth, they won't notice.

try looking at the big wheel when light is off and then turn it on.. youl see abit of a pick up on the wheel... iv seen wheels going so fast befor its really sumthing to see ZING ZING ZING ZING. try 4k 1 house meter :D it made me laugh when i first seen it.

I have a smart meter and they can drive by and get a reading via remote control. It's fully digital and they can see how much and when it's used. Doesn't bug me at all though. I'm not running a house full of grow lights though. My bill went up by about 75 bucks when I started growing but for a 3 bedroom house it's still cheaper than my friends 4 bedroom house with 2 teenagers running around. My bill is anywhere from 100/month to 175/month but my friends house is twice that much and he doesn't grow. I think it would be something to be concerned with if all our houses were closer in usage. When the differences between similar houses are so vast, how can they really know what is happening inside the house.

If you own your house and want to balance your hydro usage consider installing a gas water heater instead of electric. Cook on the barbecue 2 times a week even in the winter and you'll find your bill won't change a bit if you are using aprox 1000k grow.

My friend installed radiant heating and Hot Water on Demand systems using natural gas and his bill was cut in half. Gas bill went up but gas is cheaper than hydro. However our worlds natural gas supply is being depleted so only expect to have natural gas for about 15 more years tops. (That's insider info, not press released yet)

With transients/spikes stray voltages etc, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that the power companies could EVER use their present systems to transmit data, especially if it was to be a high speed transfer. The ONLY way it would be possible would be to transmit 2 DIFFERENT data feeds on 2 different lines and use some form of noise reduction. They would read the data feed between the 2 lines and and waveforms that are the same/very similar would be removed from the data stream as noise that was collected from an outside source. Either way I could fix EASILY any remote monitoring problems by inducing 2 different "noises" on those lines and the noise reduction technique would fail...

monthly cost

monthly cost

I'd say it depends on where you live. Honestly without any lights for growing my bill is almost 500.00 a month. In the summer when the ac is running my bill hits 1000-1300 a month. i work in it and have a network setup. With the lights running for my setup the bill becomes insaine with just 8 computers running and the two 400w lights I easily hit 5-800 a month. With the additional 3 600w lights that I am about to add I will hit almost 1k a month without the ac's on. As soon as may / june gets here and the ac has to run all day my bills will be 1k- 1500 a month and I won't be suprised if it's more. You have to remember that the more power you use the more expensive it becomes as you go over your baselines. The .10 / kwh may only apply to the basline usage, once you go over that baseline the cost per kwh goes up.

Awsome point Ballastman and I agree 100%. I still think the price is crazy though. I'm not a dealer so I have to come up with the extra doh reh me to pay for it. Kinda sucks when my bill has gone up almost 400% in 5 years using the same amount of monthly draw since the first day I moved in. That's why I jumped on this thread. But yes yes yes...pay your bill the day it comes in...even though they are crooks..sucks...can't wait till the day I have my own wind generator system. ...going off the grid is an attainable goal.

edit...my previous post about my bill going up by 75 bucks when I started growing was wrong..I looked further into that and my bill may have increased by 20 bucks....maybe

Peace

did I mention I hate the hydro companies? ... I mean hate them...they have a monopoly where I am...most likely where you are too....what do single parents do in times like this...1 bedroom apartments that have over 100 buck a month electric bills?...that's nuts
a bag of milk is almost 5 bucks? ... bread is 2 bucks or more? ... need I go on?...should some essentials be governed and capped somehow?... jeez I sound like a liberal...someone slap me...guess I have a few liberal sides to me...like that one
peace
am I high?

I have one of the meters that has the spinning wheel. I know that the meter reader comes by sometime in the afternoon, so I run my HPS 7pm - 7am so during the day there is just the load that is usually there, as I run my veg chamber 24/0.

Right now my bill is about $100/mo, and I'm going to be added between 3200 - 4000w of lights in the next month or so, plus some fans and pumps and whatnot, so we'll see how much this costs me in additional power usage.

how many watts 24 hrs...how many watts 12 hrs...how many cents per kwh do you pay?
