ELECTRICAL HELP NEEDED/Basement is full of two prong outlets!

Hey guys. I have good news, bad news scenario on my hands. The good news is I am moving into a house that has a 3 room 800sqft basement. Which of course will be entirely dedicated to my ladies = ). The bad news is all the electrical outlets in the basement are two prong. Please help! I have tools and I am not a retard.

quick electrical course

quick electrical course

of no use straight away ,,but for the furure look at getting electrical qualification ,,,

my local community college does a 2 night a week 12 week course in domestic installation ,perfect for growers ,,i presume they will have similiar in your area ..
you could build as u learn knowing your doing it right . :headbange

so what kind of circuts do you have???

is it one, 15 amp circut?? How old is it??

It might be easier to just have an electrician wire in new circuts if you're going t o be pulling a lot of juice.

Answer a couple questions and I'll tell you what to do. (Your basement walls and floor are essentially one big ground, so this is pretty much a piece of cake whichever way you have to go.)

I assume the basement is at least partially underground with concrete floors and concrete or concrete block walls, correct?

Where are the wires now? Inside conduit? Romex inside walls that are framed against the concrete/block walls? If inside conduit, where is the conduit run?

You should answer G33k Speak's questions too because then others will chime in and give you a real good critique of your electrical system. If upgrades that require help need to be done, you're a lot better off to get it done before you get a bunch of grow gear in yer cellar.

I. All I want to do is replace all the 2 prong with 3 prong. Yes I know the third prong is for a ground wire. Obviously I am either pulling a ground to the outlets or I am going to have to "rig it". I did a commercial electrical apprentincship for 10 months about 2years ago. Any ideas???

Well, jeez, an electrician asked you a few simple questions so that your question can be answered. Do you want a real answer to your question, a safe solution to your problem, or do you just want to just bitch and moan until some unqualified idiot comes along and tells you how to do it wrong?

If you have to ask how to do it, my advice is get someone who really knows what they are doing in to do it for you, clearly you don't know what you're doing from the way you approached this, don't BS that you do as you're not fooling us, just kidding yourself and electricity will kill you if you fuck up.

a. buy a pro pack (10 plugs)of 3 prong plugs from homedepot grab a screw driver and go to town...

b. answer PC and g33k ?'s then do a. the right way

i pick

c. smoke a joint drink a 12 pack and pay a buddy to do thats has no clue what he is doing

btw if you have 2 prong plugs more then likely your wire wont hang with grow lights or a/c's maybe a few fans or pumps but really man id run new lines not just replace the plugs you can get 250 feet of 12/2 for 50 bucks well worth your house not starting on fire even easyer 1 line of 30 amp 240 would be a clean idea with 3 rooms....... but "HAY" we never asked for help yo u did dont let us talk you out of the firework show

this thread has gone on way longer than it friggin should!!jesus H.!!

hey STINKFINGER!!! you metnioned earlier in the thread exactely what you have to do, and thats to replace the 2 prong with 3 prongs, its easy as shit!!, first go to homedepot, either look in the electrical book they sell or i woudl suggest to buy it , if there are things you are uncertain about building.

go to your main switch box, find out which switches control the power for the bsmnt and mark them for later.

go back to HD, buy all the outlets you need to have replaced (they sell them in 5-6 packs by the way!), get your flashlight, your flathead/phillips screwdrivers, bring the pack of outlets with you along with a flashlight, turn teh switches off and then get to replacin'!!!

it aint rocket science people.

Yeah buddy; it's going to be easiest to run a new circuit. I suggest you go 240v while you're at it. Since you're dedicating the entire basement, the extra amps will come in handy.

I guess I new what I was going to have to do... Just looking for different ideas... Not negativity..Thanks to those who offered their help.

Yeah, I say pull fresh wire all the way from your main box. I bet the whole basement is on one 15 amp breaker.

Shit, I thought that my parents' house was built pretty well until I found that the little screw on some of the upstairs light switches is actually a HOT!?

WTF? Somebody did it wrong if the metal work box is hot. If you step on the air vent by the front door with sweaty, bare feet and touch the screw that fixes the switch plate cover to the box, you get shocked. The AC/heat vent is ground.

If you want it done right, learn how to do it and do it yourself.

I like the idea of a fat 240 wire running to the basement.
