The one in Napa a couple years ago was a 6.0. I felt it pretty strongly in San Jose. There wasn't any damage here, but everything was moving. I was texting friends at 3 am to see if they felt it.

The first one I felt was in Fremont in 2011. I was in bed with the wife, and the bed started shaking back and forth. That was fun. :) I was wondering how well our 3 floor townhouse was going to hold up. I looked it up online and found the news about it right afterwards.

Yep m314, earthquakes were on my mind when I was in Napa/Sonoma region. I always feared one would shake the lights off the s-hooks/chains. Thoughts of bare 1k hps bulbs dropping onto the canopy woke me up in a sweat more than once...seriously!

Elevated apartments/condos seem to amplify the shaking or building sway in an earthquake. The most severe results I felt were in an elevated apt. while living in Calistoga. Freaky.

I've felt a couple of small tremors over the last couple of years here in Hawaii. Really minor though.

Stoned-trout, glad it was a small one for you.

The way you said bam reminded me of quake I was in, less than 5.

I was in my home and heard a rumbling sound that kept getting closer and closer. A rolling type of quake is a wave and in this case the wave was coming at me and I could hear it get louder and louder until BAM, a decoration that was nailed to my porch slapped the house. The funny thing is I heard it coming and was pretty sure I knew what it was. When the wave hit my house and made that decoration (a cat made of a wooden board) slap the house I nearly had a heart attack. Minutes later the news comes on the TV and announces the quake.

Now here in Seattle we had a 7.0 one time and that was huge. The difference between 5 and a 7 is like 1000 fold. Here is an earthquake calculator website: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/calculator.php

Anyway, I was in the back of my truck getting my golf clubs out and I heard this semi truck behind me rattling. I turned to look at the truck as the rattling was unusual. Then my truck started moving back and forth and side to side so hard I was nearly thrown from it. I turned around again and I could see the tall poles that hold up the net at the driving range and they were waving 20 feet at the top. I looked at the front door to the club house and see an elderly gentlemen trying to get up the stairs. I yelled at him to stop and take cover. He told me there were older folks in the club house and wanted to make sure they were okay.

The thing that I am getting at with the above story is that it lasted a long long time. Long enough for all those things to happen, including my conversation with that elderly gentlemen.

I went into the clubhouse and it was a mess. There was a big bowl of punch and birthday cake that was on a folding table... that made a mess. All the clubs and other things they were selling were scattered on the floor as well.

I checked and everyone was okay. I paid for 18 holes and proceeded to play golf. It was about 10:00 in the morning and I was basically the only person on the golf course. I tried to make a call to my girl friend and the cell phones were not working. I said fuck it, I am going to play some golf.

I ended up playing 27 holes that day. I Eagled a par 4 hole. (An Eagle is two under par) I hit the ball 300 yards towards the green. When I got to the green the ball was about five feet from the hole. I am or was a really good putter so I just knocked the ball in with one hand. All by myself and I get a fucking eagle. (I almost Eagled that hole another time but missed a longer put that I should of made. I got it in 3 tho, a birdie. One under par)

That was 2001. The Seattle Mariners beat the AL record of 116 games. 9-11 happened during that season near the end. I think if 9-11 didn't happen they would have won more. Everyone was really bummed out.

So in 2001 America had a major terrorist attack, Washington State had a really bad earth quake, the Seattle Mariners beat the AL record (Tied the NL record) and Huligun got a fucking eagle.

They say that earthquake caused between 1-4 billion in damages.

I think that earthquake was centered in Hayward. Might be wrong. I lived in Fremont for my first year in the Bay Area. I've been in San Jose the last couple years.

I've never felt what a major earthquake is like. The ones I've been through, the room just shakes and wobbles around a little for a few seconds.

Epicenter 16 miles from my house, some shaking then a big jolt. Power stayed on but well quit, freaked me out with no water, luckily something happened to the points in the pressure switch and we had water by 10am...

Went through all the major quakes in the Bay Area...

The 1989 quake had the hills of Fremont - Oakland liquefied. They were rolling like waves of water...

I lived in the hills of Hayward at the time...

First EarthQuake felt in late 70's in the bay area-Santa Clara by a rocking slowing up,down motion while awaken in bed and rode it out.Things swing in the room.I Had a pool and water splashed out of the pool.Nice place to see after an earthquake if nothing broke.Around 4.4 richter.Felt 2 more by not as strong...One was 5.1..Felt different than that 4.4 thou. These went on for at least 20 seconds.

1989 Loma Prieta earthquake 6.1 Richter scale,Living in San jose.Felt it,woke me up for classes that day..Traffic was a mess and underground pipes broke on main street. No classes that day.Wavy Jolt.Up,Down motion with shakes in the middle.Went on for almost 30-40 seconds.Got scary when it didn't stop...lol

2004 Mammoth Lake 5.7 Richter scale..Online at the time living near the Ocean and felt strong jolt then sidways jolt back the other way jolting back and forth slowly till disapppeared. This went on for 20 seconds.

Living near the ocean has its advantage because of the water pushing the Crust back into place and avoiding the up,down, rocking motion of the valley floor.Acting like a Big Hugh Rebound Bumper.

Didn't feel the one recently, was sleeping.

The Borrego Springs aquifer Is being over drafted , the aquifer probably borders the fault line , may have some effect on cause and or after shocks .

Was living in Reno when the '89 quake hit. Recall sitting in my truck at a stop light going home from work seeing porch plants (mums) swaying from several homes, thinking, 'how odd is that"? No breeze....then saw the news that night....Loma Prieta earthquake 6.9. Gulp!

I lived in Modesto at the time.
All I wanted was to watch the ball game then the bay started rolling!
I went outside and the trees in our apt complex wer swaying all over the place.
My brother was playing flag football and one kid tripped over the dirt surf which was reportedly visible as it rolled along.
