here's my setup:
-30"WX20"DX36"H rubbermaid cabinet
-1 150W HPS in enlosed ballast hood/maybe 4X20W CFL too
for main exhaust i will use a 4" vortex. i will have 8" of passive intake holes, not sure how many, but 8" total. probably 4 2" holes w/ elbows. my vortex will be mounted into 1 wall of box, intakes on opposite wall. that's it. i see no need for any ducts at all. i want this grow to be simple yet very effective. i don't see why i need to add ducts anywhere. the box will be in laudery room part of basement. vortex will exhaust to room. i will also have a vaportronic 4000 in box and a vaportronic plugged in, in basement. let me know what u think.

If your looking for 2 times the area of the exhaust for the passive intakes you will have to go with eight 2" inlets not four.

area of exhaust = 4"

double that is 8". 8 2" holes =16. for 4" exhaust i need either an 8" intake or 4 2" intakes, not 8.

yo vinny-

if i were you i would consider one of these panasonic whisper inline fans. 120cfm, $108, says it has a sound level of 1 sone, which is 28 db, quieter than a quiet library. i have vortex fans and fantechs but they are all in the attic--if they were in my rooms i would be bumming because they are super loud. but they are 8 and 10".

since i'm now gonna use the tent i ordered. 3'X1.5(20")X5', no ducts or scrubbers, now i'm leaning towards freezerboy's advice, and my very original plan, of using a 110-120cfm 4 or 5" axial fan. they're all i prob need, cheap and plug and go. i'm relying on a vaportek 4000, a vaportronic and an ONA block for odor. kinda a stealth setup. need quiet and odor free.
with no ducts and just an exhaust fan in side of tent, and a few available 4" inlet holes w/ flaps available in tent, 1 axial should be fine. it's only gonna be like a 4 plan grow under 250W HPS.

dude, all you need to do is wrap that vortex in insulation, use a muffler and perhaps a speed controller. You're set.
you can still hear it after that but it is much more reasonable.
and the airflow is great.
you're never going to get anything that's totally quiet.

an axial is quiet. i have a 5" 120 cfm running every day for past 5 years on my fish tank light hood, and u can't hear it until u are about a foot from it....

Unless your using a 2" x 2" square exhaust then your wrong. a 4" exhaust has the area pi*2^2 which is about 12 square inches.

a single 2" is pi*1^2 which is 3" square inches. four 2" exhaust would equal 12 square inches. so you need eight in order to double the surface area of the exhaust.

so if i use a 4" axial fan in a 4" hole, what total size of inlets...8" right...? i failed algebra...got some D's...lol.

THCV i was looking into a whisperline, BUT some say they lose effectiveness after awhile and get louder. also no plug, u would have to wire it to an extension, and safety is 1 of my main concerns.

You can't just say "it's 4" and i want double that so i need one 8" or four 2" inlets." A 4" opening has an area of ~12" and an 8" open has an area of ~50" so obviously a single 8" would be overkill(four times the size of the inlet), but four 2" would be underkill (the same size as the inlet).

You could start with four 2" and see if your temp stay low enough and if they do that's fine. If they don't simply add two-four 2" inlets.

my tent has like 5 available 4" ports w/ flaps for intake and exhaust. so if i use a 4" exhaust, i'll prob just leave 2 4" ports open and seal the rest.
