Drugging Our Kids

oh and by the way the psychiatric drug industry rakes in about 330 billion a year from phychiatric drugs

StevenSteve, thanks for sharing your experiences, I do appreciate it. I have to dispute this number, though, I find it unlikely.

330 billion = 330,000,000,000 (dollars US?)

That would be about $50 for every human on the planet, counting starving Africans and babies in India and China. Counting only relevant people in industrialized countries, it's probably over $500 / person / year.

This article (http://www.truthout.org/1213091) puts it at about $40 billion / year for the USA, probably the biggest consumer.

All that said, though, it's still a crock of shit. A mental health professional acquantance of mine heard me disrepecting the overuse of psychiatric medications and said "Oh, well you haven't tried Klonopin, then, would you like some?".

"F@#k no, thank you."

people at the hospital i was at were taking like 15 to 20 meds at a time, and the doctor was changing multiple ones regularly
This is precisely what is so dangerous. So many doctors think nothing of switching a patient's meds. And no doctor can confidently know what will happen to a patient taking so many drugs at once. The synergistic side-effects cannot be determined if more than two drugs are used together.

Switching a psych med is not the same as selecting a different marijuana strain to try.

Going off most psych meds entails a withdrawal period with its own side-effects. Then adding a new drug with unknown reactions only adds to the potential Drug-Effect Roulette game they are playing.

Docs will prescribe a new drug without much forethought at all. If they read good things about the drug, have just returned from a big pharma paid holiday, have listened to all the hype from the drug salesmen, there is nothing more they need to know to prescribe it and will look for opportunities to test out the new drug.

In fact these docs are indeed more like drug pushers than ppl really interested in the well being of their patients. Too much of their life revolves around prescribing drugs, attending new drug conventions, learning about new drugs, etc. They even give away FREE SAMPLES to people. What better way to push drugs that might be harmful.

In fact, if you see any of these drug commercials and note all the potential negative side-effects, why would you want to take them? The side-effects are usually far worse than the problem!

Actually, many modern hospitals have an electronic medical records system, that has software that checks for known medication contraindications, for instance, it will not let you order a prescription for a drug if the computer finds that the drug you want to prescribe is contraindicated with a drug the person is already on. There are also similar programs on mobile devices that docs can check for drug contraindications. Doctors also know contraindications, they don't always have to rely on a computer, although technology is great. They know the mechanism of action of drugs they prescribe, and even though some drugs may not be contraindicated together, some docs know not all the drugs will be needed or the best in that situation by the mechanism of action, some doctors. I mean, they did go through medical school and residency training, and even then have to go the competency requirements at a job and continuing medical education required by the Board.

I don't know any doc that will prescribe a drug without any forthought. One, because they don't want to hurt a patient. Doctors are people, and they have a conscious. Society does not always seem them in this light, and neither does the medical field, which is why the job is such a hard job to do. Perfection is demanded, and again, doctors are peole. Doctors though, tend to have perfectionist personalities. Also, two, because they don't want to get sued. To suggest docs prescribe medications without much thought at all is crazy. Side effects can be worse than the original problem. If the side effect is experienced, as some people experience, not all of them, and if it bothers the patient more than the original problem, or it is life threatening, then you stop the medication, not a mystery there. There are some bad docs, there are also some very good docs, too.

i saw an add on tv for a pill that makes your eye lashes longer with a HUGE string of side effects tied to it...some very serious..why would anyone take that shit?!?!?

They really do not care for the true health of an individual as long as the movement of certain companies drugs gets them more money.
All the negative outcomes and imagine the poor individuals body after years of prescription medicines.

Stay away from this shit guy's... scientology is anti-drug like the DEA, probably even more.

So if you want it ever legalized... then stay the hell away from scientology (what I recommend anyway). They worked long hours and spent a pile of money here in switzerland AGAINST the legislation.

Scientology = nodrugs-policy

its a shame that society has come to a thing like this, that large pharmaceutical companys are profiting off our sick chrildren....when i had my first child in 76 there was no ADD, ADHD and hyper active disorders, we as parents just delt with the obstacles of parenting if a child was hyper active you took him/her to the park and played outside in the back yard or at least a game in the house......(mouse trap was one of my chrildren's favorite board game, and mine too..) now most of the parents.i'm not saying all parents, but most simply many parents sit their chrildren in front of the tv and feed them sugary unhealthy snacks and when they get excited with all that built up energy the parents/doctors shove drugs down their throats............im in total awe due to the mentality of greedy profit hungry pharmaceutical companys and the doctors on the company payroll......receiving commissions based on the amount of perscription drugs issued to our chrildren and to all of us for that matter.

My sleep specialist sent me to a shrink a few months back thinking that he might be able to find the root cause of my insomnia. After being diagnosed with hypomania, he immediately wanted to push the drugs on me. I politely declined and told him that dope would do. And it has--very well. I sleep most nights now like a baby. The look of disgust on his face was wonderful.

They put me on this experimental medicine that was making me go crazy!!!!! i was feeling angry and held back and like i was going to explode the whole time i was on it.. it was fucking with me royally... then they did the worst thing they could have done... they forgot to give me a dose... the 2 weeks i had of withdrawl were even worse than being on that nasty poison.. then one night i flipped out on my mom and they put me in the hospital for over a year.. THAT IS NOT RIGHT.. IT WAS THEIR FAULT FOR PUTTING ME ON THAT DAMN MEDICATION THAT MADE ME CRAZY... it gets worse... they said if i fuck up one more time i will be in the hospital for the rest of my life weather it be another flipping out or smoking pot or whatever... well i smoked pot last week so hopefully they dont drug test me THATS NOT FAIR EITHER.. THE HOSPITALS DONT WORK WITHIN THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY... HOW THE HELL CAN I BE LOCKED UP FOR LIFE JUST FOR SMOKING A LITTLE POT????????!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am really sad depressed and down... they are destroying my life and at the same time these new meds are making me suicidal and depressed.. WHAT CAN I DO???!! The only thing i can think of is letting as many good people know about this as possible, so hopefully one day we can overturn the corrupt government and mental health system, and free all those who have no hope anymore... Ive seen people who have been in the mental hospital for 30+ years for just flipping out.. and the people cause them to flip out.. there not bad people there just victims... Its time we start fighting back against the evils of the world and building a better future for us and our children... psychiatry is the most evil thing i have ever experienced in my life time, and its size and weight boggle the mind.. i dont know how we can do it but we have to do it none the less...they imprisioned our wonderful plant matijuana and they are going to do worse.. THEY WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THE TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE WORLD IS UPON US.. I dont know what to do, or how i can face the multitude that is upon us, but i will not fear and i will not give in

My sister is in the counseling business. She's always been a procrastinator which drove all of us crazy, but now she channels procrastination into fighting the insurance companies which want a snap diagnosis. She refuses to diagnose people without enough time to do it properly. Insurance companies try to demand instant diagnosis so that they can dot their i's and cross their t's and get the person to then go to a psychiatrist, pay another co-pay, and then get drugs, for which they pay another co-pay. The pressure that she faces is extraordinary, fortunately, she's REALLY good at procrastinating. When my mother told me, I laughed so hard, b/c who would have thought that procrastination could be a beneficial character trait and one that is used to fight the Man??

Miss O

FYI, I will ask her what she thinks about the revision of the DSM. She's a super smart kid, very reflective, and all that. I never thought I'd respect my baby sister as a counselor, but she's really kick-ass. . . .
