Is it possible that this guy is guerilla growing himself. Went to europe planted a crop harvested it. Came back to the real world. You said no one knows you grow. Perhaps since you guys aren't friends he doesn't want YOU to know that he grows?? Perhaps he grows or went and made some connections and knows that you have good bud and might be a kindred spirit, that would be an asset to anything he were trying to do? It would explain why he's coming over more. You been smoking alot of Sativa lately? Paranoid much? Just wanted to give another perspective...

If your that worried about invite him over. Talk to him see whats up. You don't like the answers then you can always "shoot him in the face" as suggested.

As for the coming over unannounced. A little while back, I found a cure for this most annoying habit. Whenever someone comes over unannounced. I wait until that evening or the next morning depending on when they came over. I wait until dinner time then show up. Or if its the morning I make sure they wake up to my smiling face knocking on their door. "Whats up man, kinda early isn't it? Yeah sorry for coming over without calling THAT SHIT ANNOYS the hell out of me, know what I mean? Anyway (insert your excuse for being there). Works for me everytime. Just my pennies

For a person to be gone for 8 months...and still be involved in being an informant, would be EXTREMELY peculiar...I have never even heard of that-- (Unless somebody in your circle got busted for something significant right before or right after he disappeared)
I agree it sounds strange, but not like a rat-- Maybe he got busted for poodle fucking or something...or like someone else said, a Mental Hospital...something he is embarrassed about, or even something he had to do that was difficult, like helping a dying relative or something--
I would just ask him point blank--
Ppl lie for a lot of different reasons...they aren't always bad...sometimes just personal-- Think of how many times we have all lied to our friends about grows and such--:tiphat:

I would have questions. "Do those Euro chicks really have hairy pits?" "How was the beer?" "How much is a Euro Pass?" "Bring back any souvenirs?" "Why didn't I get a postcard?" "Who took care of your place?" "And.......where did you get the moola to do it?"

Don't answer the door when the dude shows up. You owe him no explanation. Don't discuss him with anyone you mutually know. Definitely don't do business with them. Just be sociable as usual.

When and if you have contact with the dude and if herb comes into the conversation, let him be the one to bring it up. Then hit him with another question.

"WHAT WAS THE BEST YOU HAD ON YOUR GETAWAY AND IN WHAT COUNTRY?"

Entrapment works both ways. Watch the eyes. Liars look left and down for established mistruths and up and right for on the spot fabrications. Lack of blinking and blinking too much are signs of stress. Your shit eatin' smile and talking just above a whisper will be disarming.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

no one should ever be in the same house as your plants...
8 months or 8 minutes since you seen them.
no company,no parties,no cookouts.....

blowjobs at her place.

problem solved.

[EDIT]
just read the second page of this thread(i have my settings such that there are only 2 pages)and noticed all the hating....
i was replying to the first post w/o reading all the other nonsense so my .02 could be construed as more hate.
quite the contrary it's simply my .02

maybe the dude was on "to catch a predator" and is embarrassed that he went to jail for trying to play with little boys. And while locked up, they made a little boy out of him

Thirdly, this person is someone that I have known for a long time, I don't want to go into details about the personal relationship but suffice it to say that he is someone I would not quite call a good friend, has been more than a casual acquaintance.

don't sell to him or his "friends" any more, aint worth it even if he was a good customer in the past.

Yeah I agree I have done the same and have known quite a few people who went on "a trip out of town" for a few months.

When old friends or people I went to school with ask what I am doing I often tell them I have been travelling.

I agree with everyone who said go with your gut.

Listening to my gut feelings has been the most empowering
thing I've ever accomplished. Nothing and no one will ever
be as true to you, as your gut.

I have a very active social life with people of all walks of life, none of whom know or suspect I grow. As a matter of fact I would be probably be the last person that most people who know me would suspect of growing.

This seems to be a direct response to something I said [Why would you have someone who wasn't a close friend in your house?] so I will respond.

I was not trying to be rude.

I have a large group of acquaintances and when I want to socialize with them, I go out. Most of the people I know do not even know where I live. There are a lot of good reasons why someone who is growing in their home should not have acquaintances popping by looking for weed.

Most of the time, with most people, you're probably safe even if they do know. But what if they get into trouble and can throw you under the bus to save themselves? What if they run their mouth trying to "one up" someone else? What if they get desperate for money and decide to rip you off?

Hopefully a "good friend" wouldn't do that, but a long-term semi-acquaintance? I wouldn't put it past them. The idea, in my mind, is to minimize the amount of information that is in the hands of anybody who doesn't absolutely need to know what is going on.

Not intended to come off as nasty or angry and I certainly won't be losing sleep over your situation (nor will I beat my dog). Just trying to give a little honest advice to a random guy who asked for it on the internet.

this is all great info for ya. Never tell anyone, Never bring anyone to the house, Never sale bud, Sealing bud can be a Major risk if your willing to do the time then sale, sale, sale. If someone wants to meat up take it to a burger joint or a strip bar.

gotcha...actually never saw that phrase before..and here I thought I was being original.

Just to clear some stuff up...my grow is not located in my home, it is indoors on my property which is fairly expansive, but located in a place the casual visitor to my home would never go to. Even a frequent visitor would not think to go there.

As far as visitors go, I do have a day job (professional career actually), and unfortunately need to interact with several people I work with outside of the job, this involves hosting dinners and whatnot that are really more like saturday night business meetings. I also have a legit business on the side, and use my home as my office/workspace.

Also, I don't sell to casual acquaintances, and no one ever leaves my property with ganja. There is only one person who knows that I do grow, but I've known that guy forever, and we have partnered up from time to time to do stuff outdoors, trade clones, pollen, seeds, etc. He knows how to keep his mouth shut, as do I.

Sure is lot of speculation and petty arguing (like typical web bullshit). I think the OP is handling this fine. Sure are plenty of know-it-alls out there.

if he has no idea you grow, why worry about it? if you have known him for a long time say something like "homey i am getting about 10 different stories from folks as to where you been for the last 8 months. i don't wanna piss you off but WTF?" he may say something that clears everything up, and he may give you enough info so you know for sure that you want to get the fuck away from him.

if it's driving you bug shit you gotta do somehting

I religiously check the "last 24 hours booking" in my local county as I don't want to walk into someone else's mess
Also, I run checks through the court records. It shows every case for the last 20+ years.
And I check the local newspaper online arrest records that cover the last few days. I call everybody on it when they approach me. That way you get the feel for them right away and see how they react. I know the status or disposition of their cases, usually more than they even know.
I check meganlaw.com I found several people that I knew over the years on there for unbelievable chit.
Twice in my life I got a real bad vibe about someone. I found out later that one was a cop and the other was an informant.

If you find out he is no good, then smoke some sativa and stay on your toes.
If you find out he is okay, smoke some indica and chill.

I know a couple of fellas who don't appear on local public record. One was arrested for DWI and 13 quarter sacks of weed after a fender bender. Another was charged with 30 felony counts of manufacturing weed in a hole under his home. Prolly a money thang.
