"Most likely, it was wolves that approached us, not the other way around, probably while they were scavenging around garbage dumps on the edge of human settlements. The wolves that were bold but aggressive would have been killed by humans, and so only the ones that were bold and friendly would have been tolerated."


Another idea you don't hear about; Dogs like to eat human shit. That's why they were approaching people and following them around. Once tame they were really handy for keeping the human babies clean.

With Eskimos, it was common practice to have someone carrying a whip or club go outside with you to drive away the hungry sled dogs went you took a dump. When abandoning a campsite, it was the practice that each person got to enjoy pinching a loaf in the quiet privacy of an empty igloo free of yelping hungry dogs, before hitting the trail.
