Does your proxy really work?

I have been asked by numerous people how to check if their proxy is working. Here is the answer.

http://www.ip-adress.com/

Turn off your proxy, and click this link. It will give you your IP. Then turn your proxy on and do it again. This is the way I check mine, Good luck.

Every proxy I try to use makes loading a web page or downloading anything take 100 times longer.

So I finally gave up and found a safe Internet access point that isn't in my name.

lol your way to paranoid

I am the proxy master ! That being said... :)

for quick proxies I recommend

anonymouse.org FREE non encrypted
findnot.com PAY, very secure, encrypted anonymous billing

For a quick run down on why those TEST my proxy links means almost nothing read my summary of online privacy.

First off .. what is an anonymous proxy. It makes me invisible on the internet right.. WRONG, it doesn't very little to hide anything your doing.

Mosy anonymous proxies are NON ENCRYPTED and this means they are actually offering you very little true security.

Non encrypted proxies which most of you are using simply hide your IP from ICMAG or other sites you visit. They do nothing about the fact that your ISP can see all the content that you view including text and pictures !

Don't get me wrong, it's useful, but it's FAR from anonymous. Using an anonymous proxy will help in the event that ICMAG or other sites you visit are under investigation or somehow have logs that get siezed. This could happen if a sting was done at the ISP level of the ICMAG server, which is how they would probably do it.

So just like in the case of OG going down and being investigated for months beforehand having been on an anonymous proxy will certainly give you a much better level of protection than giving your IP up to the host or to a potential sting.

However... if the investigation is on you then an anonymous proxy isn't going to do much because they will go to your ISP and since your data stream is not encrypted they can see everything.

To give those interested a view of what happens. You request a packet using your anonymous proxy. The request goes to your ISP first then out to the anonymous proxy provider. Then the return packet comes to your ISP and then to you. While the packet is being routed through the ISP it is completely vulnerable. The only information that is hidden from your ISP is the URL but since they can see the content of the HTTP traffic it wouldn't take much effort to figure out where the traffic was coming from.

Basically they see a stream of data that looks just like ICMAG, but comes from your anonymous proxy. So, this is hardly being anonymous when the number one place that law enforcement goes first to spy on you is completely open.

Now in most cases this won't matter because just as in the case of OG it won't be YOU who draws the warrant for internet evasedropping (if they even needed one) it will be the BIG guys like OG or ICMAG that get the focus and thats the main reason to have an anonymous proxy. To ensure that you are not associated with the bigger fish.

Just don't let the name fool you. You are not anonymous when using anonymous proxies. Your ISP sees everything you do unless your anonymous proxy is encrypted.

Also both these types of privacy boosters are easily circumvented by malicious coders. Test out your anon proxy all you want, but so long as your browser runs java or active X it takes just one click on a malicious link to cut right through your anonymous encrypted proxy and reveal your true IP.

So If I was law enforcement. I could either sieze your server and put in code that reveals your IP encrypted anon proxy or not or I could extort your IP through fake links by logging in as a forum user and posting links that would secretly reveal anyones IP who click and has JAVA/Active X enabled and doesn't have the proper security settings for executing JAVA/active X.

Either way anony proxy is just one level of saftey.

Logging in remotely via encrypted remote desktop to a PC that is not at your grow house and using that internet connetion is a safer alternative. You still use the encrypted anon proxy, but you do so through a remote connection, so if your anon connection is compromised it will trace back to a safe address.

Anon proxy is a good start, but an encrypted anon proxy is really required to be anonymous to any reasonable level IMO.

I recommend the web page like services as they have more feature, load pages much faster and are in general much easier to use.

findnot.com is probably the best one out there
anonymouse.org is a good free basic one

Jesus is correct in what he says regarding the ISP. With that said though, all I care to do is stop sites that I visit from knowing my location.

If you are under investigation, even if you encrypted, it can and will be read. If the feds get a warrat to trap your internet use, they have enough probable cause for an arrest already, they are just looking for more.

Thanks for that. After trying a few proxy programs for my new OS, I am using anonymouse. Easy enough.

How risky is it to post on these sites without a proxy. Has an investigation ever been started from an IP logging?

Are there any regular old programs that I can install that will do it for me? I dont want to have to go to another site every time I want to come to ICmag.

IC is one of your safer pot sites, as the servers are in a Country that is pot friendly. With no proxy, I would be cautious of sites within Canada or the US, as both these have shown they will prosecute.

BTW, what did Sproutco do to get banned?

I didn't have a problem with sproutco and I was just kidding, he actually helped me with my situation and it worked, but now hes gone off his rocker and is acting like a little girl

sorry to keep dragging this off topic, i better share some info.

Proxies are really only effective if you have java disabled too. You need to disable a lot of features to be almost anonymous. But you never will be completely, its just thats how it is. Yes you can get programs too but they are expensive and i don't think its worth it.

Very informative thread.

Would like some more info on java. How to disactivate it.How bout on firefox? Any other info on being anonymous would be great.

Edit: I use a wireless pre-paid card. They don't even ask for any info. You can even give a different name. All you have todo is deposit credit once a month. So
even if you were being tracked, it won't get them anywhere.

Is it possible for someone to trace your IP activity other than you ISP?

Peace

Not really possible to trace IP activity unless you have a wireless router and it was compromised somehow or you get infected by some sort of spyware that calls home regarding what you're looking at.
