doctor prescribed debt?

I know many people have it worse than my family at this point, but here is my rant.

How much do you (or family member) spend on prescriptions a year? way way way too much. my mother spends about $85 a month. that's a lot!

I thought we were in a "free society".....
I still don't understand how the government can mandate- that all citizens must carry health care. let alone pay the fees to a private, for profit, entity!!!!!!
how is this possible?
truly I am at a loss.
so we have to pay a monthly fee, a co-pay for each visit, a % of the overall cost,

but the real money is the medicine the prescribe you.

time to pay back the big pharma lobbyists back, the ones that helped to get u elected.
i don't have health care, fml, i cant afford $250 a month on my budget.
the 100 fine is more like a huge co-pay to me.
we will all be paying a lot more to these private companies over the next few years, this is just the start.

my rant.... Im sure most of you have similar stories

so my mom, 80, and retired, got sick 2 weeks ago. she is doing better now.
she worked for the gov for 25 years, retired with full coverage insurance. pretty nice.
the insurance pays for most of the costs. anyway, she is on a fixed income, as most retired people are. 5-6 doctor visits, $20 co-pay each time. multiply tests were ran to find the problem. Bleeding ulcer seems to be the problem, but nobody knows for sure, or where the bleeding is occurring. Great work!
she lost half the blood in her body, don't know where, how, why, or where it went. Great work!
blood transfusion was given and stabilized her condition. but could not find the source of the problem.
I understand some problems are hard to diagnose, but how can a doctor prescribe so many pills, and not know what the hell is going on with the patient.

my real problem is that my mother was left with an incomplete diagnosis, and has 10+ different pills she has to take daily over the next two weeks until her next visit. Trying to get a straight answer from a physician is impossible, they don't know!
we are not sure what is wrong, but you have to take all these pills to make sure nothing gets worse...?

so..... even with full insurance from the gov, my mothers last prescription list cost me $385.00. So her pills have cost me over $500 in the last two weeks, and they don't even know what the problem really is. a couple of these medications are not covered by insurance.
bet the pill companies are giving great kickbacks for each script filled. Most pills cost fractions of a penny to manufacture, yet they retail for $40. each. 20 each after insurance.

Im sure my situation doesn't even compare to many of yours.

best wishes,

I am insured but if I had to pay for prescriptions it would cost more than some folks make a year. pills for everything sleep, mood, heart, cholesterol ect. they got a pill for everything . I am trying to get off most of em slowly. I have had doc prescribe meds and the insurance wont cover it what a hassle.

no doubt I have good insurance... my insulin needs alone without insurance would be well over 1k per month not including everything else.....pills/pumps/meters/needles....etc...

Still don't know exactly how I feel about obamacare, but I currently pay close to 800 a month for insurance. Once obamacare kicks in that should be reduced to half that.

Dude, step away from the cool-aid! You can't even get on to the website to sign up for Obamacare, let alone find a doctor. Also, your 800 a month will easily be 1200 a month three years from now when Obama care goes full scale, mark my words.

Come on up to Massachusetts if you want to see how well govt run healthcare works.:) No problems up here!! The state can't afford to give everybody a hip replacement or pay for their diabetes supplies, hell they can't fix the bridges or the roads.

that's the problem in my mind.
the state and the gov should easily be able to afford what is needed, at least for the most part. the problem is that it is a profit driven industry. not for the people, but for the peoples $.
the health care industry has the largest markups anywhere.
pills cost fractions of a penny, yet they retail for over $40. each. what a profit margin. and u have accredited people, as paid staff with kickbacks, telling the people you have to take these pills to be healthy.
let alone the markups on the care given.
more $ to the rich, while we all pay the cost

In communism the state owns the economic infastructre. In fascism the state controls the economic infrastructure via crony capitalism or outright force.

America is and has clearly been fascist for a while. The fairy tale that is the "American Dream", "land of the free and home of the brave" etc etc. is corpro-state propaganda to keep the proletariat marching in step.

It's fascism and it's just now really out in the open for everyone to see. The rich will get richer and the poor poorer until the system breaks down as it always does in these cases.

Wait until you have to pay a tax for your drone surveillance.

You'll be happy to be just sick and hiding in your house.

I guess everyone has their own cross-over point where they start using words like fascism. To me the US is a fascist nation but Obamacare isn't the reason why.

OP sorry about your mom. In my personal experience having grown up in a western medicine family (i'm the only non-physician in my immediate family) I admire western medicine very much, and consider most of its' adversaries to be misguided. I say this only to establish my bias upfront.

That said, maybe you should switch physicians if you are able. Physicians are not an inherently dishonest or unintelligent bunch. If mom is not satisfied with her answers, either ask more pointed questions or shop around for a doctor. If you can afford it, it may be worth taking a trip to one of the industry leaders. I'll try to get you an appointment if you wish to reach out.

Are the pills helping in any way?

If you are able to give more specific information perhaps I can be of some assistance.

Good luck brother.

...As for the politics it's one thing to be against Obamacare but IMO you don't really understand how the US works if you rail against socialized medicine. That is because we already had socialized medicine even though we didn't call it that. It was just a less efficient socialized medicine under the guise of privatized care.

Gang banger POS with bullet wounds weren't left to die on the floor mat of our hospitals before Obamacare. They never paid for their services. So who did? Responsible people. Just like now. Only we're more up front about it.

Anyway the real annoyance I have is the refusal to accept reality from the other side. They offer no alternative. The current model was fundamentally broken, it couldn't be sustained. Once you accept this, you must also accept that most Americans do not adhere to a libertarian view on healthcare ie, if you can't afford treatment then you die. Most of us agree that basic healthcare is a human right we can all work together on. So if not Obamacare then what? The right offers nothing.

I thought we were in a "free society".....

I was born in California and nothing is FREE here, the past 60 years.

IMHO that is the PROBLEM with society as a whole, everyone EXPECTING everything for free! That sort of attitude is why those that work, must work HARDER
to provide more FREE
services, they personally do not get...because they are busy Earning their services.

When people start realizing that NOTHING IS FREE and start earning or paying their way, maybe things like this would not need to be mandated.

I cannot tolerate parasites, at any level. If you don't earn it, then you really don't deserve it! Expecting others to support other able bodied people that do not work, is ridiculous.

Personally, $85 a month on medicine is pretty cheap compared to what I pay and will continue to, even with this crappy mandated healthcare system. As long as IRS isn't allowed to do the collections~~we should be safe.

Frankly, I have seen some relatives that should be forced to work for what they receive for free and expect! Expecting something for nothing only puts the burden of payment on the broken back of another.:ying: jpt

In the California I remember, one could have gotten a world class education for all but free, right up to the time of Ronald Reagan. He had a problem with that. Being that he was the Governor, he could and did change it.
My heart goes out to the OP. We All live in some really hard times. As I watch the so called media try ever harder to divide the country, I am reminded of Franklin's comment about sticking together or hanging separately.

Could someone please explain to me how healthcare is a human right? Dr Adams from "Gunsmoke" always helped everybody, even the gunslingers and always sarcastically complained about never being paid. Healthcare was a matter of good fortune and the nature of the Dr but a right, like a right to be tried by a jury or free speech? I live in Massachusetts, I see part of the future here now (not good) but how does everybody expect a heart transplant to be a human right? I'm just wondering because more often than not Dr's go into medicine for the dollars not the favors but I doubt there are many Dr's here who could comment on that. What is a human right anyway? On a world scale, not only the wealthy countries.:thank you:

IwannaRetire, me too.
thanx for the concern.
the pills are working, at least they seem to be.
thankfully she seems to have fixed herself.
it kinka has the doc perplexed. the doctor said more than likely the cause of her massive blood loss was a bleeding ulser. scope through both ends were given and nothing problematic was found. because the scopes cannot reach into the vast small intestines, their best guess is the ulcer is located there. further tests needed...
my mother did go to see another doctor, he referred her to a specialist. next week is the earliest she could get in.
the cool part is she gets to swallow a pill that takes 1000s pictures of her entire digestive track. I wanna see this. at least the toys modern medicine gets to play with are cool. the machines they use really aren't that expensive, the profit margin is just insane

I don't mind paying into the system, I know I will want medical treatment if I need it,
I just don't want to pay into a profit driven system to make billionares more billions.
I don't have a solution, just a bitch.

If we had good reason to believe in the powers that be, this would be an easier pill to swallow.

My question is, why does everybody expect free health care? Didn't anybody ever teach you nothing is free?

I don't think most people mind paying for health care.
its where the money is going that's the problem.
forced to pay for profit entities, the same ones who got our politicians elected.
the profit margins in this industry are unlike any other.

to quote Citizens Aux PD #71 of the Obamacare or pay the penalty thread.
" The price for most prescriptions is currently about £7.85 (about $10.65). I paid that for a 60 day supply of pills that would have cost about $65 for a 30 day supply in America"
that's $11 in the uk vs $130 here in the usa.
now that there will be a monopoly on the system, no competition, manditory compliance...
does anyone think the profit margins will decrease?

now we are going to be forced to pay these same prices throughout the entire healthcare process.
seems insane to me.

The toilet seat was for space and zero vacuum. Personally I would want a very good seat.

The $500 hammer? For jet fuel lines on aircraft carriers. Absolutely no sparks..

Fuck the system. It's broken and I'm not going to volunteer my money. They can strong-arm me the old fashion way.

Good luck OP
