Also, consider your grow space, and method of propagation. If you are gunna grow in a closet, obviously, a 1000 watter would be way overkill. I'm gunna offer you some advice, that I wish I had, before my first equipment purchase. Go with a digital ballast, and a 600 watt air cooled hood. And I don't even know anything about your area. The 600 digi, is almost comparable in lumen's, to the 1000, with almost half the energy consumption.
what's up brother? lol. i had one UPS guy decide to drop off my computer at a neighbor's house. that made me doubly concerned as in the old days, i ordered lots of ferts and supplies over the net. i told the neighbor (a nice and very nosy older gentleman) not to accept deliveries anymore and to please tell them to put the box by by gate LIKE I ASKED!!!!
i'm the same with with throwing things out. i've had a mid size CO2 gas container with all the gages etc. for 12 years or so. i just don't feel comfortable throwing it out. so in the closet it sits. i stopped using CO2 when a seal burst. the canister was in my kitchen. one minute quite, the next second it sounded like a train had enterered my kitchen. freaked me out of my socks. it was leaning against a wall so it didn't shoot across the floor like a missile.
the thought of that happening in my trunk as i drove home with a full canister worried me considerably and i never did it again. there is no such thing as too careful. many of my busted friends learned the hard way. "hello officer. why do i have a CO2 canister in my trunk?" ahhhhhh....
i mostly concur with your advice re the 600 watt etc. my 1000 watt is in a 5.5 by 5 foot by 11 foot tall closet. gets a wee bit warm in there in the summer. when my 1000 watt balast goes, i may go with the 600, the digital ballast etc . but, i used to use an 800 watt, 400 hps/400 mh unit. it was my first. i did find the plants got bigger with the 1000 watt. i've been reading alot about the 600 vs the 1000 and i'm flipping a coin as too which way i'll go.
you can always tell when i'm really high. i ramble on!

htg supply are good people. i got my 400 watter from them and its their brand. i had it for about a year and the ballast went out. emailed them, sent it back and had a brand new unit ballast, reflector, bulb and all in about a week! cant go wrong with a 3 year ballast warranty. oh and do it on ebay. they sell everything on their site on ebay under the same name htgsupply. and its much more private than from just an online store.

now you all have me debating if i should go with the 600 watter with a digi ballast... why do u all say that is the best way to go?
odor control i dont think would be a problem, just venting the light i think would be the issue and cooling it down.. never had anything that powerful before so im not really sure what im getting myself into

The 600 W digital is the best bang for the buck. Buy "Marijuana Horticulture" by Jorge Cervantes (the book with 1120 color images). It has a very good section on lighting.
I always go to the hydro shop. Like mentioned before "They are a wealth of info.". I have never had any body ask me what I am growing. I have purchased at at least ten different shops. If they would ask, I would leave and never return. Do not go in there and tell them what you are growing either. Buds are flowers, etc.
