Why did you have to run a fan with it now? Did the bulb ran hotter when you seperated it form the ballast? Or was it already 180F at the start. Sorry for the stupid question.
CFL's are actually rather HOT (unless we are comparing to fire or HID light bulbs of course).
If the CFL's are creating enough light to use for flowering then odds are your case could benefit from a fan on the CFL's. If you have more air flow on or around the bulbs said air will 'take' some heat with it as it passes the bulb. Now unless this air is vented your cab is actually hotter than with no fan on the CFL's as we took heat out of the bulbs and put it in the case. Since hot air is EASILY vented outside the CAB and you should already have that in place the result in a cooler cab.
How much of a difference does it make on case temperature? I have not played around enough to offer any thoughts, BUT 180F sounds like a CFL that is running 'COLD'! It has cool air flowing over it!
CFL's can EASILY burn your plants. They are very unlikely to dry them and start a fire, but they can burn them, stunted growth, split cola, or worse... Since CFL's light dimishes so quickly it is nice to have cooler bulbs, allowing the plants to be/grow a bit closer while still being happy, healthy and care free.
