Howzit brother ..?? Long time no see.. Anyhow question like say on the larger scrubbers like marx', could one use the white batting that comes in rolls instead of only the panty hose? Especially being that say he couldnt get a large enough panty hose.. lol.. If that makes sense.. And could one use the batting say over the panty hose or is that overkill? peace..

You can use batting over the panty hose on the outside.. I ended up using the SEAT part of the panty hose to cover the 8" outer core. The legs would only cover the 6" inner core.

ill post pics here of my bigger scrubber as I build it.

the 6" isn't really a problem w/ the pantyhos

but 8'' is gonna be a big bitch...hehe

the longest width of hardware cloth i could find was 24"

so if i wanna go bigger i gotta cut it and use it lengthwise (a bit more of a pain)

all the parts cost me $30 buks minus the carbon...so wayyyyy cheaper than buying one made.

on this scrubber Ill double wrap the core and outside w/ hardware cloth, and double wrap both w/ vinyl window screen before I put the panyhose condom on....makes shit really really tidy.

like i said Ill post pics.

going to buy my parts this week and hook it up this weekend. things are starting to smell funky in here.

easy for me, you did the tutorial on the vortex 175, which is what im using. im going to be recirculating air in a 4x4x7 "homemade hydro hut" (not going inline). its 112 cubic feet, so the 175 should keep it fresh and clean in there. anyone see any problems in this? pm if possible.

yo durban, killer thread. I'm about to be making a carbon filter for my new setup and this is a design I am for sure to consider. I just know that I can get the carbon filter replacements but I havent looked around for the rocks.

Yeah your makin sense man. But if your running less than 100 cfms, you are probably better off just getting the cheap True Air carbon filter from Wallyworld. It's cheap and the filter pad replacements are cheap too. If you run one or two in a small room, it would probably take care of your problem. Here's a pic of one I have. Sorry it's not exactly the best of quality.

that filter pad can be cut and emptied and refilled over and over making it even cheaper...I love duck tape :jump:

yep, i built mine from the original sun is shining thread on OG and i had to build mine big. It's 5' long and 8" in dia. loaded with carbon i'm guessing it weighs 30-40 lbs. if i remember right it almost took a 5 gal bucket full of carbon

Ps. i strongly advise anyone building one of these to use fine window screen out side the welded wire/harware cloth to prevent the carbon from pocketing on the outside like mine. It will make pockets between the pantyhose and the welded wire.

excellent advice chief!

I made both my scrubbers following this thread, and the only thing i did different was to put the windowscreen around the hardware cloth, and the the pantyhose over that.

doing it this way also helps keep the hardware cloth from tearing the pantyhose.

I'd like to give credit to SunIsShining for being the originator of this design, It's the exact same one that SunIsShining posted on OG that i've been using for years (I remembered his name partly due to it being my favorite Bob Marley song.).

I made one that has a charcoal chamber 16" long and 8" diameter, it works great with my 4" 19 watt Fantech FX4 inline fan hooked to a 1000 watt HPS.

One modification I made was to take a large air filter, cut out the paper box part surrounding it, and use duct tape to secure it around the outside. This prevents the carbon from sagging out and also extends the life of the carbon greatly by preventing dust infiltration.

Nice writeup Durban Poison... and a big thanks to SunIsShining!

Or what about something like this?

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4857817

Would something like that work for a 3x4x4'ish size space???

I bought one of these and tore apart the filter, and refilled the filter frame with carbon and it works decent, it even has a built in ionizer to boot. In the last couple of weeks I still need an ona gel to kill all of the smell though. BTW here is a link to some better specs for anyone interested.

I know the original post by marley1 is over a year old but I thought the info might still help someone else out there.

Not trying to be a neg here but I thought the recommended thickness of the carbon was 2". Thicker the bed the longer she's gonna last and the more she's gonna filter. So to get a 2" thick wall of carbon around a 4" core you would need to use an 8" shell, yes 8-4=4 but remember your centering the core, splitting the 4" which gives you a 2" perimeter. Wholesale HVAC distributors will have the large size fittings. If you can't find them in the phone book ask an HVAC guy when you see one.
On a side note, I enclosed my carbon filter inside a plywood box with a home return air filter installed, I use the high dollar home filters as a pre-filter to keep the dust out of my carbon. Try this setup, look at how dirty the filter gets in a month and you'll see how much life you just added to your carbon filter. She's been running 2 years and I still don't smell it outside.

Peace

because the specs on the stanely are arguable...i was wondering if anyone has made one for the stanely ???....did it work what size did u make it and if you made it again would u change the size slightly?....

Are these carbon filters effected by temperature? To they gain/loose effectiveness in really warm temps--like say at or even over 130degF? I'm speaking of the ambient temps in their environment not necessarily the temp of the air pushed through them.
