Disillusioned and depressed about life in USA

"....In my 46 years I have travelled to 52 countries and lived and loved in most of them.....99.9% of all the people I have met have a good heart but most are chained to a life that they would rather not have because they lack the confidence to just leave when the rot sets in....."

Thats the truth rite there Gypsy, people are creatures of habit,we like routine and order. But for those who can break free and change at any age, magic awaits you!2Broke, we are all around the same age,you know the words..
just hop on the bus gus, make a new plan stan,no need to be coy roy, just set yourself free!!!

what are you talking about

life begins at 45!....well, it does, once you adjust to the fact that you really are officially an old bastard.

if I was one trip away from 3 strikes and out forever, i would leave the US immediately....go south if you like it warm, go to north if you like snow, go asia if you want to teach english, go to africa if you want adventure..what are you waiting for? another charge that will put you away forever?..get a passport, as many credit cards as possible and leave forever very soon

Yes Chamba, that seems the wise course of action to me as well. Unfortunately the affairs of the heart are not as easily tossed aside, and I am having a difficult time with convincing my woman that there is imminent danger. She is niave to the workings of the criminal justice system, and believes that it is mostly fair and just, only because I have spent thousands on attorney fees. She does not understand that once you enter this system, you are no longer given the benefit of the doubt, charges are trumped up to force a plea, etc.

What got me so depressed to begin with is when they came over and booted 2 of my vehicles. Fortunately I have vehicles that are in my business name they are unaware of, or I would be completely unable to make a living. I start thinking what comes next? Taking a drivers license for ouil is a stupid solution to the problem. Fit a vehicle with a breathalyzer would be a better solution.

It seems as the economy gets worse here the legislature expands on the justice system. The cars they booted had be put in my wife's name also, as I am not allowed to own a vehicle in this state. How totalatarian is that?

Hopefully by the time I am off this probation I will be able to sell my house and convince my wife we need to go, otherwise, she could be visiting me with a pocket full of change for the vending machines a few times a month.

So what it all comes down to is that my country is becoming to facist for me to continue to live here much longer. The people of my country do not seem to want me here anyway, unless they can keep me in a cage, which does not really work for me. So I am a man looking for a new country. A stranger in a strange land. And the research begins.

I know exactly how you feel, 2b2s. I've been living with my felony marijuana possession conviction for less than a year now, and already I understand what it is to be a second class citizen in my own country. I have to lie on apartment applications (and hope they don't do a really thorough check) just to be able to rent. I have no hope of ever returning to the occupation that I spent many years of my life learning. For the next three years while on probation I have no 4th amendment rights -- the cops can walk through my door and turn the place upside-down anytime they want. Worst of all, in Florida where I live, I do not have the right to vote in any election -- for the rest of my life.

Honestly, I'm not really even an American citizen anymore. Resident aliens born in other countries have more rights that I do. Why? Because I grew a fucking plant. (Okay, okay. It was a LOT of really BIG fucking plants.)

I lived in Brazil for a a few months several years back. What I found out there is that there is a legitimate way of immigrating, and then there is the way for people like us. For only a few thousand dollars, you can get someone to bribe the right people and get you a permanent resident visa. It honestly is a whole lot easier than going through the normal process even for people without criminal records.

Another way of living abroard that can be done with ease is to live a "semi nomadic" existence. Most countries will let you stay on tourist visa for 6 months a year. So just pick your two favorite countries and live in both places. Keep two households, one in each country, and fly back and forth between the two every six months. The only down side is that you can't work in either country legally. However, you can always own a business -- or two businesses in this case.

I think the perfect scenario would be to find a parter -- someone you trust like a brother -- who is also sick of the nonsense here in the US. You and your partner could take turns managing your businesses. For example, from January through June, he might manage your internet cafe in Rio while you were managing the bar in Buenos Aires. Then you switch from June to December, and you manage the cafe while he manages the bar.

You don't need anyone's permission to do this -- no applications, no background checks, no nothing. All you need to get a tourist visa is a valid passport and the passport fee (like $200). I know for Brazil, the tourist visa is good for five years.

Anyway, that's how I've been thinking. Personally, I doubt I'll spend another decade living in this fascist fucking country. As soon as I have a big enough pile of loot to buy my way out, I'm gone.

Hey Harry,

......shit if u were a paedophile theyd throw the red carpet down for you......

That is just flat scary. Here they are on internet registry, although it may not be long before all ex-offenders are on the internet here. If it makes someone look like they are tough on crime I would expect some new legislation soon. I better keep my mouth shut as some leo is prolly thinking "damn, why didn't I think of that". The nazi's started with sex offenders and look where that went.

Joe,

That is something to consider as I do not really care for the cold climes like I inhabit now. Shit if I am to break away and make a new start it might as well be warm. I have downloaded the Rosetta Stone and was working on Spanish, but mabe I should start the Portugese I downloaded instead. Thanks for the info.

The two languages are actually very similar. You could learn one and easily transition to the other. The major difference is pronunciation.

Portuguese will let you work and live in Brazil. Spanish will get you by in every other country in South America (every country worth mentioning).

That isn't as one-sided as it seems, since Brazil is roughly half the land area and half the population of South America. It is actually a very developed, but very unequal, country. Pretty much everything one would expect in a modern country -- from satellite TV to high speed internet -- is available, IF you have the money. Most people who live there don't.

Moving to Brazil from the US is a big culture shock. These folks are DIFFERENT. They don't think like we do. This is sometimes good and sometimes bad. They aren't anywhere near as uptight about planning every second of every day, and they enjoy life more, I think. However, the general level of poverty means that there are a whole lot of people who want what you've got, and don't mind fucking you over to get it. It takes a big adjustment in your mindset to work and live there sucessfully.

I would definitely reccomend a couple of LOOONG vacations (at least a month) in any country that you plan to move to. You may find that it is not all that the picture postcard makes it out to be.

Hey Joe,

Yeah that is a good idea and it may help to get the wife onboard with the idea of leaving. I believe she is thinking that she will never see her family again if we take off for another country. I am going to try to explain that she will be able to come and go as she pleases, I will not have the same luxury.

I doubt I will be able to sell my home anytime soon anyway, as all the plants are closing there doors around here. That does not do much for the housing market.

Well, if you don't ever plan to come back to the US, there is a sure-fire way of getting the money out of your house. Take out a second mortgage. Take out a third, if you can. Then take off. Let the bank sell the fucker for you. It is hell on your credit score, but that number doesn't mean anything outide the US anyway.

Hey Joe,

I am laughing about the re-finance as I am mortgaged to the hilt now. If I can get my wife on board I will just keep the $2200.00 a month I give to the bank and have a nice little nest-egg for the move. Shit, I will be able to stay until they send whoever it is that says you have to go. That has to take at least 120 days eh?
