Oh you wanna know what went down...DimeBag65 said:Shmike- Glad you like the thread buddy and its great to have you back with us and not dead after having a parachuting accident! I personally wanna hear the story of what happened, did the parachute open late? or did you just get a really rough landing?
Well, I had a good freefly jump from 10,500' sit flying and doing a bit of head down and flips and just fun stuff, when I hit my hard deck I split up from my group and popped my main. It opened and sent me into a bit of a violent spin because I had a line-over where the steering lines from my right toggle wrapped around my canopy pinching off the 3 of 7 cells on the right side. So I had to cut away from that and go to my reserve, which was a bit of a struggle with my arms being yanked away from my body because of the centrifugal force of spinning like that.
I remember looking at my altimeter when my reserve inflated, I was at 1200', my hard deck was 2500', I lost 1300' in what seemed to be a blink of an eye. I looked up at my reserve to count my cells and make sure the lines are straight and the slider is down. And the slider was stuck 3/4 of the way down.
Without that slider all the way down the canopy wouldn't flare properly, flaring is basically hitting the brakes on a parachute. I yanked on my toggles 3 times like you're supposed to, to try and get it unstuck. But it wasn't going anywhere, I could steer a bit but I knew it wouldn't fully flare.
So I got lined up with the DZ and I was coming in for a landing expecting to wail the ground at full speed and bounce to my death, I was ****ing scared man. But when the time came it happened so quick, I got ready to do a parachute landing fall and spread the impact throughout my body and I flared like usual, I slowed down but not much at all, that's when I just hit the ground right foot first at just under full speed and then my canopy drug me 20' until I could get it to stop by yanking on one of the toggles to collapse it.
That's when I checked to see if I was in one piece, noticing the pain and my right foot which was a pile of mush, every ligament was torn in my foot, I crushed my talus, and broke almost all of my toe bones near the talus, crushed my heal and growth plate. The bottoms of my tibia and fibula were crushed down around my talus, my knee was in a lot of pain as well as my hips and back, but my foot was in so much pain it superseded any other pain I felt. And that was it, a nice short ride to the hospital all ripped on that gas that made me sound like Earl Jones, surgery that night and a 2 week stay in the hospital and here I am 2 months later, crutch mobile, still waiting to get this clamp taken out of my ankle. .. I forgot to mention I was also a bit concussed.
